White Fragility aka Why the Right can't admit their Racism

kevingrr says...

I have noticed it, but most of the time it is tied to economics. IE taxes, jobs, fees, etc they feel they are being burdened with. The racial component is there, but it is just a part of overall disdain for the poor. They don't like paying taxes, perceive that 'others' are not paying their fair share and tie it to a racial comment. Yet, most of the people I hear complaining live an outstanding lifestyle with an abundance of free time and money.

That said - the speaker in this video confuses me. While his explanation of 'White Fragility' makes sense he doesn't tie it to Treyvon, Ferguson, Charleston, in a very convincing way.

What I keep seeing in the media and online is a constant battle about details and phrases. 'Thug', 'Terrorist', 'Racist', and confederate flags. They want to talk ad nauseam about these things instead of the overarching long term effects of economic disenfranchisement, gun control, and a broken criminal justice system that is difficult for both the police and the general public (e.g. drug prohibition and criminalization).

Online I see people figuratively shouting at each other and "picking sides". Some people have nothing but disdain for the police and some have nothing but disdain for minorities and poor people.

Instead we need to have disdain for bad ideas, policies, and actions.

President Obama's speech was very insightful. He recognizes the multiple obstacles to reducing violence and the limited political will to really effect change.

I found this article interesting:

Police have no CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY to protect YOU!

I was just using this as a recent example. I am sure there are many examples but Ferguson and Baltimore are all very recent and public.

yeah...none of those people had it coming...just cops randomly choosing people, mostly based on their skin color...

dude, what size blinders are you wearing?

Jerry Seinfeld does not want to be on Seth Meyers Late Night

That's what made Craig Ferguson so special. No pre-rehearsed or producer driven interview crap. Just two people talking as if they were friends.

Just your everyday harassment, courtesy of the NYPD

GenjiKilpatrick says...

But yeah, this statement is just another example of your EXTREME, at this point willful, Naivety.

Are you sure you read that article?

Because the author reminds us that the only reason those ridiculous false charges were dismissed.. was luck.

New York Housing Authority will generally sit on any evidence for months.
Getting that footage would normally be a batttle in-and-of itself.

In that time, NYPD would engage in character-assassination.
Just like police in Ferguson with Mike Brown. Or Trayvon Martin. Or the man who filmed Eric Garner's death.

So great, a recourse that has an extremely slim chance even go to trial.
Even if it does go to trial, public opinion has already decided..
"Well He deserved it. He was a thug anyway."

And on the even slimmer chance that a cop gets punished for their incompetence.. the damage is already done and the victim/s already dead. i.e. Freddie Gray.

Cops will never be perfect, the situation will never be perfect, but the citizen has a recourse if cops misbehave, and it's called civil court. But until you have a case, i still think you should support the police because they are there to protect you.

David Letterman's Final Top Ten List

bareboards2 says...

Craig Ferguson was my favorite. Not consistently funny, but consistently dangerous.

There was a period when Letterman was my guy, but the feeling faded.

Still. I watched all three final episodes the last week. I enjoyed the heck out of them.

Conan Says Thank You To David Letterman

Top 10 things I respect Dave Letterman for:
1. This.

(don't really care for him otherwise, always thought Conan, Leno, Ferguson, Fallon were way funnier than Letterman. Let the flames commence!)

You are a woman in handcuffs? Let me punch and kick you!

Fairbs says...

I would include looking the other way as a trait of bad cops, but I still don't believe the numbers are that high. I do see your point though.

It's interesting that the riots in Detroit back in the 60's are very similar to what happened in Ferguson and Baltimore. Blacks sick of getting killed by bad cops and finally having enough of it. 40 years later same shit.

newtboy said:

I would say even 1% is WAY too many if the remaining 99% are going to look the other way.
For it to be only 1%, you have to consider those by-standing cops that let their 'brothers' be violent criminals as "good cops". I can't go that far, meaning it's more like >99% bad in my eyes.

Cops should get 'credit' for doing good things that are above and beyond what they are paid for, but not applauded for simply doing their job. That's a horrendous position we're in where people can honestly say that a person doing what they signed up and are paid for requires a parade or kudos...I'll give them only when they give the pay checks back.

Deray McKesson: Eloquent, Focused Smackdown of Wolf Blitzer

SDGundamX says...

@lantern53

Christ, dude, he doesn't "think" he is surrounded by racism, he clearly IS surround by racism! The events in Balitmore and Ferguson (and N.Y. and L.A. and Atlanta and all the other cities where this has happened before) clearly demonstrate that.

The media in this very video are trying to make it seem like smashed windows and burning buildings are a worse problem than black people being killed in custody by police! Meanwhile, the media barely even cover white kids rioting in Huntington Beach for reasons not even remotely as good as protesting racist oppression. How can you not see the racism that is right in front of your face--the racism that literally is dripping from the screen in this video?

It's not about "letting your skin color hold you back." It's about overcoming the odds that are stacked against many black people born into poorer communities, which takes incredible luck as much as it does incredible effort. Black people want an equal chance to succeed. They've been asking for a more level playing field for quite literally decades now and they still don't have it. Can you really not understand that anger? That feeling of powerlessness and rage? Can you really not see how condescending and patronizing it is for you to suggest people to just suck it up and get over it? How ridiculous it is to comparing overcoming low grades to get into college with constantly getting pulled over and roughed up (or killed) by cops simply because of the color of your skin? Is there no cognitive dissonance at all?

More Wag the Dog: Police and National Guard "Snatch & Grab"

newtboy says...

WTF? Soros "Funded" the Ferguson and Baltimore riots? That's such an asinine assertion. You don't fund riots, they're free.
Downvote the insinuation that the civil unrest is a scripted liberal fraud. How ridiculous.

Also...Why does the National Guard Humvee have a headlight out? Who's doing maintenance over there?

Cop Smashes Cell Phone For Recording Him

A troll is someone who just says something to inflame.

If you can give a reason why you do not agree with someone, then you can't be labeled a troll.

I'd had to agree with Bob, however, that the DOJ is there to push the radical agenda of Obama.

Of course, a lot of the employees of the DOJ, such as FBI agents, are law enforcement types who didn't have the advantage of communist mentors like Obama had (Frank Marshall Davis)..they didn't grow up in Indonesia, worshipping monkey gods and such, so there is a disconnect.
They probably didn't have commie parents like Obama, but now Obama is the boss so they have to give him their due.
So in the case of Ferguson, Obama and holder send FBI agents to investigate, and since they have personal integrity, they do a good job and holder gets nothing.
But my point is this...Obama must have a serious case of cognitive dissonance. here he is raised to know all the faults, all the shortcomings, all the missteps that the US has taken over the years. He has had none of the patriotic, love for the US traditions, etc.
He gets elected, now he's the boss, so he's going to straighten out all the bad things the US has done in the past, he's going to strengthen her historical enemies, and weaken her historical friends, because...the past is just not fair.
Which is why Obama is closer to the muslim brotherhood than to the Lions Club. Also, I don't think he feels much closeness to his black brothers because he's only half-black, he was raised in a privileged white neighborhood, went to Yale, etc. His black criticizers are right...he's not down for the struggle. It never was a struggle for him.

Porn Actress Mercedes Carrera LOSES IT With Modern Feminists

Trancecoach says...

(Did Babymech just say that getting brutally gang raped in front of one's children by intruders in one's home is somehow comparable or "on par" with getting cut off in traffic? What the fuck is wrong with you?)

What Ms. Carrera doesn't appreciate here is that the assault of Cytheria undermines the narrative put forward by the Social Justice Warriors (i.e., modern feminists) that gives attention to the Duke lacrosse hoax, the Treyvon Martin case, and the Ferguson debacle, but completely ignores Cytheria's rape. Why? Because it negates the notion that rape is always a function of class and privilege (i.e., white affluent men raping poor minority females) and never not. If Emma Sulkowicz or Jackie Coakley lie about being assaulted, the SJWs are all over it, but if Cytheria reports being assaulted by underprivileged African American men, the SJWs simply ignore it.

Modern feminists don't care about rape victims. They never have. They aren't trying to protect women. They are trying to punish masculinity by displacing their own inabilities to cope with anything outside of their wealthy, upper-middle class bubbles...

14 Week Old Police Dog In Training

release us-a short film on police brutality by charles shaw

lantern53 says...

Just reading the caption is enough to dismiss this in toto. Trayvon Martin was killed because he was beating the hell out of a guy who was protecting his neighborhood, beating him ground and pound style. Almost nothing reported in the news was true, much like that savage in Ferguson.

Alternative Ballistics Less Lethal Firearm Attachment

Fairbs says...

'Does not necessarily mean they should die'. Wow, this is some serious PR work. They're going to Ferguson with it first. Hmmm? No one's ever going to use that. It's not practical for one. If they wanted non-lethal, I believe there's already rubber bullets, batons, and tasers.
