White Party - A Lesson in Cultural Appropriation

JustSaying says...

I'll quote you again for emphasis:
'Fuck the Irish and Jews, they don't get murdered at rate of 1 every 28 hours.'

Dude, fuck you for that statement. I'm german, most of my life I've been told to feel sorry for the fucking holocaust. It ain't my fault.
I take issue with parts of the jewish community that keeps complaining about their history and ignoring all the other, smaller holocausts, the ethnic cleansings and whatever else you want to call the genocides happening after WW2 but I will not accept you taking a dump on it.
You have it bad, no doubt, and black people in the US always had to endure unimaginable suffering. I have absolutely no clue how horrible the shit you and your ancestors had to go through is.
But...
My great-grandfather and his peers build fucking corpse factories. My ancestors shipped people in train cars to a place to literally destroy them, to murder them. They called it 'Endloesung'.
My ancestors industrialised genocide. The Shoah claimed at least 6 million lives.
As justified your rage and your hurt is, as much unimaginable suffering your ancestors and those like them had to endure, you don't get to tell those that survived and their families it to fuck themselves.
I wouldn't dare to do that to you or your ancestors.

There's a lot of terrible shit going on around the world and it's part of why I'm not fond of my own species. We both wish the world would be different and I like to think I understand, or at least have a vague idea, why you're so angry. But how could I? I never suffered that awful shit. I'm sorry but that's just what I was born into. Nobody ever asked me what I thought about it.
However, maybe I'm wrong but telling a group like the jews, a group of people whose history of being treated horribly as long or even longer than your own people, to go fuck themselves...
you're just loosing me here. I have no other choice than calling you out on that. You're dead wrong on that. How can you do that? Don't you have any decency, haven't you seen the mountain of corpses?

They murdered them. All of them. Blacks and jews. It doesn't matter. They're all lost. We lost them.

If i were to break all four of your limbs, then tell you:
"Stop crying, some people have it much worse you know."

You would look at me EVEN CRAZIER and probably wonder:

"WTF does that have to do with me?!
I'm suffering MAJORLY right now, right here! Help me!
Oh god please, help me."

But when you or any other "mildly racist" white asshole say it..
It's like some Zen Buddha shit.

"we all suffer. we all are one."

Get the FUCK outta here with that bullshit!

Go read my fuckin' sift talk already.
Then come back and tell me if you'd ever say to a women:

"Well, you know. LOTS of women get Raped, hun. Even men too. They don't seem to complain about it a lot."

No.. you won't.. crazy assholes.

Homeless Guy Knowledge

newtboy says...

It always confuses me how, as a society, we seem to think that prison is for punishment, and rehabilitation is now 100% the job of the convict, then we act like they have not yet 'paid their debt to society' and should continue to be shunned and punished when they get out of prison. We need to look at other cultures that treat people differently, and actually look at WHY they offended in the first place, and try to remedy those issues during incarceration and make them proper, productive citizens. Our system of punish, punish more, then add some permanent punishments, all while expecting the offenders to 'pull themselves up by their bootstraps' (bootstraps that were taken from them in prison) and, while enduring punishment, better themselves is just insane. They'll never be the people we want them to be if we keep putting obstacles in their way.

Strength Is A Skill You Acquire, It's Not Only About Size

ghark says...

Building up the bones and tendons through practice is pretty important as well, but yea, strength is definitely less important than most probably think. The main exception though i'd say is if you want to tricep press your opponent. You can hold someone much stronger than you with proper technique and enough endurance, but if you want to finish them with a tricep press you gotta have beastly triceps.

Delicate Surgery

Trancecoach says...

For knee replacement surgeries, you want to be sure that the knee is capable of taking the kind of punishment that knees tend to endure in the course of normal functioning.

Don't ever point a gun at something you don't want to kill

Mordhaus jokingly says...

WINCHESTER REPEATING SHOTGUNS

Over four hundred and fifty thousand sportsmen use and endorse Winchester Repeating Shotguns. The U.S. Ordnance Board, after subjecting one of these guns to the severest of tests for strength, reliability, accuracy, penetration, endurance, excessive loads, defective shells, rust and dust, reported officially that the gun could not be improved upon. For field, fowl, or trap shooting they are equally good. Then why not a Winchester?

Finally, dynamic beard growth. I've been waiting my entire life for a game with dynamic beard growth.
Why is there a scene from 2 girls 1 cup at 4:20?

Yeah I'm not entirely sedentary but when I exercise, it's a chore - something to be endured as a necessity rather than fun. I blame Mr Bamforth!

it was long after getting out of school that I discovered fitness for its own sake.
And it's been a good journey; the first steps weren't fun, but now it's woven into my life; and fitness doesn't equal sports (although it can).

Although this woman was authentically traumatized by the experience of living outside her box, I kind of feel sorry for her. Sorry she is so close minded to living and learning. Sorry she has been brainwashed to the extent that she can't function beyond her religious upbringing. and I feel bad for all those who have to endure her and her beliefs. Her convictions will go on to traumatize her children, and her children's children, and so many more generations to come.

Her physiologic internal belief system will control her until the day she dies, and she will never see any of it from within her bubble. Such a waste of human potential. She obviously has potential for strong convictions, and deep emotion that, I'm sure, could have been put to use in more productive ways in her life.

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

artician says...

Probably poor judgement on the part of the videographer. I think the atmosphere of all the other comments, day in and day out, weighs on most women to such an extent that those innocent courtesies, and any other comment from a man, have simply eroded the patience of those who are sensitive to living in such environments.
It will stop, someday, but what kills my spirit is understanding how the passage of time, the record of history, and knowing the calculation of both of those respective of whatever your experience you struggle with, means you'll likely have to exist in that world for the duration of your life within it.
I have struggled with things my entire life that, to this day, aren't things that will be recognized, let alone rectified, by the time my life is over, and knowing that while looking toward the future you have here is nearly unbearable.
Didn't mean to bring the whole thing back to a personal element. Just meant to express that I understand the cycles of human progress and the frustration of having the foresight to endure them.

On the subject of feces, I am reminded of an aspect of the Uygur/Harris debate that I wanted to pick up.

As they were discussing torture, Harris was rather convinced of his understanding that death would be worse than having your holy book mistreated or being sprayed with (fake) menstrual blood.

This fails to appreciate a major drive behind the use of torture: to "reset" a human mind, to have the subject betray whatever is most sacred to him/her. The torture at Gitmo/Baghram was directly aimed at one of the most defining aspects of their victims' personalities, namely their religious beliefs.

All of this was beautifully illustrated in Southern America when the torturers' aim was to completely negate the societies' strong sense of solidarity by forcing selected people to betray one another, by putting them into either-you-or-them situations. As horrible as death is, to have the core of your very being negated by force is, in fact, worse for quite a significant percentage of people, as proven by those who would rather endure torture/death than deny what made them human.

They manage to wipe a human's mind alright, as you can see by the mindless husks in those torture camps that were once human beings. And by setting them up as examples, entire societies are reprogrammed.

The more "civilised" version of it would be the treatment of whistleblowers. It sends ripples through society, just like its uglier cousin, inducing a chilling effect that I would at some point love to see quantified.

Burt Rutan's ARES turbofan "Mudfighter"

AeroMechanical says...

Pretty cool. I don't see it being too useful, but it's a very cool plane. It has nothing like the payload of an A-10, so the big question I'd have is what sort of endurance does it have? Given that they're planning on replacing A-10's that can stay on station for hours with F-35's that will only be able to for a matter of minutes, I guess it isn't considered a priority anymore (which could be right... might be better to get there fast, expend your weapons, then leave to rearm and come back fast). And then there are drones, of course, cheaper and with better endurance yet to back that up. Meh.

Anyways, it's always interesting to see the clever designs that never panned out. I wonder what this was developed for. The A-10 was already in service by then, so there is probably an interesting story behind it. Although, at the time I think the A-10 was intended as an anti-tank weapon and it wasn't until later (maybe when this was developed), that they figured out it could be good for close support too.

Real Time with Bill Maher - Racism in America

Depiction of victim as criminal? You bet your goddamn arse

We done yet?

Don't get me wrong, racism, particularly against blacks, is still an issue in the US (and other parts of the world). But maybe next time read a history book or two before spouting such utter drivel.

And if you really want to get into an oppression contest...
African slavery started a few hundred years ago.
The Irish have had EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS* of oppression by the English, and I haven't even touched on the godawful misery the Jews have endured for thousands of years.

But that's a meaningless pissing contest and it only leads to idiocy.

* I am culturally obliged to write that in all caps. Sorry, it's an Irish thing.

God loving parents give gay son a choice

visionep says...

This is not a kid, he is a young man at 19 years old. Why is everyone so sad for him that he has to go live on his own? $60K on the go fund me site is ridiculous.

When I was 18, a few months after graduating high school, my mom asked me to move out because I was coming home to late. (Fortunately it wasn't quite the heated discussion this guy had to endure) Should I have been crying to everyone I knew about how unfair it was and that my mom didn't love me?

I agree that this guy's parents are horrible and ignorant, but I don't feel bad for this guy. He is an adult and needed to get away from those people if he was going to have any chance of not being like them. If anything being gay will help him move away from the ignorance that he was raised with and hopefully make him a better human than his parents.

The boys wish they could throw like a girl

AeroMechanical says...

That's awesome. Since 13 is typically the middle-to-beginning of puberty for girls and, assuming she has control of her 70mph fastball (probably) and can field too, I'd bet she'll be hanging tough with the boys for another three to five years at least. It will be very interesting to see where it takes her.

Kudos to her for enduring the obstacles, putting in the hard work, and most importantly for setting an excellent example for future generations.

I would like to see a shift in the general public's interest towards sports where finesse, coordination, and mental acuity can totally supersede brute strength and speed. Unfortunately, race car driving is the only competitive sport that immediately comes to mind, but surely there are others.

edit: Oh, and I apologize for using this as a soapbox, and I don't mean to detract in any way from her accomplishments or to imply this newscast or SI is evil, but as a counterpoint, I also always feel a little disgusted when the media (with their Nike, Reebok and Gatorade funding) draws a direct analogy to gender equality through athletics. It's a dangerous straw man... but meh, not everything on TV and magazines is responsible for solving serious social problems. It's just entertainment, so I'll shut up about it now.
