Tesla autopilot saves the day

MilkmanDan says...

There's an aspect of this that I'm confused about:

In order for this to happen, he (the driver) had to have previously engaged the "Autopilot" so that it was operating at the time this occurred, correct? So if he would have been manually driving, it wouldn't have engaged the brakes (at least, not automatically)?

Assuming that is the case, I think this suggests that it would be very much a good idea to include an option to enable emergency / accident avoidance aspects of the autopilot even when you are manually driving.

I'm concerned about sensor faults etc. leading to weirdness if you couldn't turn that OFF if necessary, but barring that, as a driver I think I'd be happy to have this watching my back and covering for my human attention issues pretty close to ALL the time... Maybe it does actually work that way and I'm confused.

Anyway, I continue to be impressed with Tesla.

The Howmet TX: Rethink Everything

newtboy says...

I want to know more about how it works. It seems like they're saying it's direct drive off the turbine (with no clutch? Really!?), but then they are able to stop the wheels with the brakes while the turbine is spun up...so how does that work?
Looks like fun, and an interesting idea.

Little Help Needed from Anyone with an iPhone 5 (Sift Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

This is what she reported back to me: "On my Iphone 5 the mousover text pops up and I can click. The second time I want to do this it doesn't work anymore. On the iphone of a friend it does not work at all; nothing happens."

Does it do the same for you, that the "second time" (not sure if she means tapping the same hotspot a second time or tapping a second hotspot) you tap it doesn't work anymore?

oritteropo said:

I clicked on Mijn opa, and first click didn't go to the page, it popped up the mousover text (Houd jij van pirateverhalen? Lees dan snel het verhaal over mijn opa.). Second click went to the Mijn opa page, but it wasn't immediately obvious that it hadn't just gone back to the front page, I had to scroll down to realise because the left hand panel on the full version is above the main panel on the iphone version.

p.s. I liked the both the story and the site design... and if anyone else is wondering about the Daffie... it's this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAF_Daffodil

World's Dumbest Cop

Mordhaus says...

Here is the thing, and it's the reason why I have started to switch my opinion of our law enforcement. The number of stories and videos that show good cops has become dramatically outnumbered by the ones showing despicable human beings wearing a uniform.

Now what am I supposed to think as a rational person when I post a video showing a good cop, not wanting to shoot a murder suspect that might be armed, and immediately after that I get inundated with multiple videos showing officers literally murdering, beating, soliciting, and running over people?

It's equivalent to me coming to your house every day and beating the shit out of you for months, but one time I buy you an ice cream cone instead and tell you to have a great day. Now can you tell me that you are the type of person that is going to say, "Wow, he got me an ice cream and didn't hurt me today!" or are you a thinking creature that is going to say, "Fuck you and your ice cream, you sociopath!"?

It's just not good enough anymore to be that one good cop or even multiple good cops unless you are willing to take a stand and out the bad ones to be criminals. The thin blue line can no longer be held if we are to gain a modicum of trust back towards our law enforcement. No more buddy system, you fuck up and you do time. Until then, I can't trust a cop anymore and I have actual family that does police work.

Completely Erase Entire Comments from People You're Ignoring (Sift Talk Post)

VoodooV says...

I came back when I saw @speechless's comment. She is exactly right. Ignore does not work. It is a poor substitute for moderation.

Ignoring only works if everyone does it...and possibly not even then. It only takes one person to take the bait to make a troll thrive. If everyone actually did ignore, then it's no different from booting the troublemaker so quit beating around the bush and just boot the troublemaker. One method shifts the burden on the community members who many have given up after seeing how ineffectual ignore is and left, the other method shifts the burden where it should be, on those who run the site.

This site has been going downhill for a long while now because problem members have not been kicked out. It has been noted that the #1 video now only requires 40-ish upvotes where in years past it needed over double that.

I think I even recall @lucky760 voicing his concerns about the continued existence of this site in Sift Talk a while back.

All it takes is a short glance at comment histories to see who is here to contribute to the community and who is here only to incite and rile up and do not contribute to civilized discourse. Most people who read this will know who I am referring to. Dissenting opinions are still required to back their points up. Simply dissent by itself doesn't make the viewpoint valid or else you've just lowered yourself to the level of youtube comments, at a minimum, ad hom attacks and the bigger more well known logical fallacies should not be tolerated.

A good community requires moderation. All the strong forum communities out there depend on moderation to lay down the law on a regular basis...not just when one feels like showing up on the site once every month or so.

CEO cut's salary so he can raise workers pay to 70,000/yr

Mordhaus says...

Yeah part of the way he is paying for the raises is to lower his own salary and use profits instead of reinvesting or banking them.

I was reading a recent list of the highest paid CEO's, the top 10 I think, and they are all from US companies. We need more CEO's to take the long term vision and pay their employees more. A dedicated employee does quality work and you get a better product. I don't see it happening anytime soon though.

Where are the aliens? KurzGesagt

I say things like that because they are objectively true. The very concept of omnipotence and omniscience violate all kinds of physical laws. They are paradoxes; the "immovable force meeting the immovable object", but all our experience and learning tells us the universe does not work like that. Again, we might be wrong, but the more we learn, the less likely it becomes that we've missed something so vast.

We haven't missed it, chaosengine; the vast majority of people on Earth believes there is a God.

Human history is full of misery, suffering and cruelty to everything around us. One of the few bright points is our quest for knowledge, and you willfully reject that to cling to a stone age belief system that has been demonstrably proven false (geocentricity, for example) again and again.

In every important way, man hasn't learned anything and hasn't changed at all. The misery and suffering in the world increases year by year, it doesn't decrease.

Factually, it's incorrect.
Morally, it's bankrupt and consistently on the wrong side of history.

Matthew 24:35

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

One day you might wake up and realise (to paraphrase the much missed Douglas Adams) that "the garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it".

Until then, you are welcome to indulge in your fantasies, but if you insist on injecting your irrationality into debates like this, expect disagreement.

I've read most of Douglas Adams works. I grew up secular and you would probably be shocked at the level of agreement we would have had in the not too distant past. I have been set free from the bondage of slavery to sin, and have been born again into a living hope. What you know on its own profits you nothing, because without faith it is impossible to please God. Ask God to reveal Himself to you. You don't have to acknowledge it to me, but that is the only way you will ever know anything about God, is by His personal revelation to you. He is faithful to give you a revelation of your need for a Savior.

We've been at this for years. You don't absolutely deny God exists because you can't, yet you say things like God existing would contradict everything we know about the Universe. For all intents and purposes, you deny God exists and you have spent a lot of time and energy arguing from that position.

I don't really want to argue about any of this with you. I pray for your soul and I hope God saves you before you pass from this life, but that and how you respond to what God reveals to you is out of my hands.

Am i reading this right? It seems doublepromote does not work on same star level as promote. I assume it was overlooked when promote was changed. Promotes stack so i assume it would be no different then two single promotes and thus same star level.
