The last time I voted was when I was a freshman in high school. Never voted again until Trump. He was my inspiration to register to vote for the second time in my life.

It wasn't so much that I voted for Biden. I voted against Trump.

Goal accomplished.

Sorry you had to be a victim. You just got caught in the crossfire.

Unarmed child shot in the back while running from police

newtboy says...

Just the start of the investigation, and they released security video of the drive by.....and this car was just driving behind the car with the actual, now charged shooter, not involved but simply a bystander that was hit with crossfire.
Cop was today charged with criminal homicide (why not manslaughter or murder I wonder).
So much for "if".

Edit: they're now reporting he was in the front seat of the shooters car, not the second car in the video. He's not the shooter, but was involved.
Damn it, news organizations, get your story straight before you put it on the air please.

@greatgooglymoogly -- "Lethal force is only for when someone's life is actively being threatened."

and @Mordhaus -- "You can't shoot a fleeing suspect in the back unless the officer has probable cause to believe the suspect 'poses a significant threat of death or serious bodily harm'."

A fair investigation absolutely needs to happen. BUT, it is at least possible that it was reasonable for the officer to make the judgement call that the kid was an active and significant threat of death or bodily harm to other people.

If he's running away from a car that was clearly used in a drive-by, with weapons in the car... I dunno, man. However questionable the officer's actions are, the kid getting himself into that situation requires a rather longer and even more questionable chain of life decisions.

I'm not saying that stuff is known (I haven't read or watched anything beyond the video), and again a fair investigation into the officer's actions is absolutely necessary. But at some point, I think @transmorpher makes a solid counter argument -- again, IF the stuff about him clearly having just been involved with a drive-by is true. Live by the gun, expect to die by it.

uBlock Origin here (same as eric3579 mentioned), but the issue wasn't technically an "ad", per se. I guess the YouTube terminology is "embedded endcard", which many channels use to promote other videos on their channel.

The uploader of the original embed did so, in spite of the fact that it completely obscured the ball, and largely obscured the kid's reaction.

So I guess I should have complained about it as "omnipresent (self?)promotion" as opposed to straight-up advertising. But anyway, @eric3579 's uBlock filter from that Reddit link worked to remove embedded endcards from all YT videos for me, and at least in my case I feel like nothing of value was lost by making that universal. Also prompted me to do google searches of reddit for other blocking scripts, with some mixed success. Found one that blocks all "sponsored content" on Slashdot (and works), and one that blocks autoplay video on fansided sports blogs (but unfortunately left the audio playing with no video window to mute/kill it in).

BTW, thumbs-up on changing the embed to one that doesn't have that issue, @Spacey (I think, although I guess with the new script I wouldn't know if it was still there). Wasn't intending to catch you in the crossfire of my bitching about it originally; I know it wasn't your choice to put that endcard in there.

Graphics card woes

ForgedReality says...

Based on reviews, Ghosts was not only a terrible port but just a terrible game in general. EA tends to push their devs to release things more quickly rather than with higher quality. I wouldn't doubt that at least contributed negatively to your experience.

Crossfire and SLI can be dicey though just because the GPU's have to know how to talk back and forth and stay in sync with each other, which just escalates the probability that something can go wrong either from the game developers' end or from driver support . Single GPUs are plenty powerful these days, so I'm right there with you with the single GPU approach. I've not gone back to multi-GPU since my 4870x2 many years ago (which usually had issues due to ATI constantly breaking the drivers and then having to fix it again every other update).

Gutspiller said:

Unfortunately, at least in my scenario, it's not an AMD vs nVidia. I was on nVidia before with CoD: Ghosts... still very poor fps, and still the same answer, disable your dual GPUs, and the game will run better.

Maybe it's a CoD problem more so than other devs, but really... If one of the biggest titles to launch every year isn't optimizing for dual GPU cards, there isn't much of a reason to buy one if big AAA devs aren't going to take advantage of it.

It's like you're throwing your money away buying the 2nd GPU.

I do agree about the drivers tho, I constantly see driver updates for nVidia cards, and sit and wonder where AMD's drivers are.

Single nVidia GPU for me from here on out.

Too bad those "The way it's meant to be played" mean shit when it comes to the devs supporting your companies top-of-the-line cards.

Graphics card woes

Gutspiller says...

The sad thing is, as an owner of an AMD 7990 (dual GPU) and seeing that most of todays games run horrible with a dual GPU setup because the devs have not taken the time to code for it, my next upgrade I will be forced to go to a single GPU card.

So either way, both companies have a darker side that isn't talked about as much as they should be in reviews.

Example: i7 4.2Ghz, 16GB ram, AMD 7990 GFX card, CoD: AW @ 1920x1080 will drop to 7fps.... IN THE MENU. (and it's not just COD). I've seen multiple new releases run like crap.

Talk to support, they answer is disable crossfire. Why pay for a dual GPU if no new games are supporting them, because their biggest audience runs 1 GPU.

I wish a new company would knock both AMD and nVdia on their ass, and take over with better tech, faster cards, and not be so sleazy. (One can dream)

Jon Stewart on Crossfire

Loved it. I wonder if Hannity will ever get axed? Jon Stewart did get that bowtie wearing Crossfire Schmuck dismissed IIRC.

Christopher Hitchens debates Scott Ritter on Iraq

bcglorf says...

Spoiler, Hitchens 'wins' the debate. I can't honestly say I've watched or listened to a debate between him and anyone were that did not seem to be the case. As often is the case though too, his grandest victory is understated, brief and easily overlooked.

Ritter thumps hard on the absence of WMD in Iraq to condemn the invasion, which on it's surface seems a strong argument. Hitchens casually references an unwillingness to be lectured on WMD's by those who cautioned against invasion for fear that Saddam would use those WMD on US troops. Scott Ritter went on Crossfire before the invasion to state that Saddam could easily reconstitute his chemical weapons and invading was too risky.

CryEngine3 - Tech Trailer (Crysis 3)

deathcow says...

I run 2560x1600 graphics and like to pull as many fps as possible. Also I gotta disagree I have a hellacious goodtime playing todays visceral FPS shooters multiplayer online.>> ^Fletch:

At least the next dumbed-down piece of consolized crapola will look pretty. Unfortunately, it'll still play like a frickin' console port.
@deathcow Why do you need to upgrade anything? Like every other potentially decent PC game in the last 5 years, it's being designed for Xbox and PS3. If you can run other recent FPS's, this should be no problem. I'm still running Core2Duo (oc'd) and a 5870 (also oc'd). I have another, still brand new 5870 sitting on a shelf that I just haven't been bothered to Crossfire yet. Haven't needed it (been sitting there for about two years; but maybe this weekend...). This is a corridor shooter. It has to be in order to run on consoles without choking. Even the outdoor areas are claustrophobic.
It's sad that there is so much emphasis on graphics over substance nowadays. It's the only thing game developers have left to convince PC gamers that they aren't selling the PC version short, even though it isn't the lead platform... better graphics, more graphic options, higher resolutions. I don't give a shit about "Pixel Accurate Displacement Mapping" or "Tessellated Vegetation", and if the game is worth playing as a GAME, you won't even notice it. Doom2 is still more fun today than any of the consolized dross released for PC in the last 6-8 years.

There are no winners in this sham of an election, they are both the same in terms of policy, they both suck.

I don't disagree with that. I don't like where we tend to put the blame though, on the politicians and such rather than on ourselves. It's our own damned fault.

TV News used to do some investigative journalism, and it used to be a loss leader for the networks and done for a public service to earn them the right to the frequencies they were offered free of charge. But with 60 minutes and others of the sort the networks learned they could turn a profit and examine more personal issues then with Crossfire and others of the sort they lost even the public service requirements which they had on broadcast.

From Vince Foster murder allegations to blowjobs, 911 conspiracy theories and Swiftboating, death panels, foreign born, communist, socialist, we took it all in and never changed the channel or turned off the TV, and it DID shift our votes and opinions.

The fault is with us. We bought all of the deregulation arguments which allowed our current media and corporate system, we kept electing people who would do it some more even as the impact of our prior choices should have been getting more clear, and we kept responding to and watching ever more extreme and confrontational "news" shows and ads. Any politician who even tried to play nice, honest, and so on was simply steamrolled over and we never bothered to notice. And now we complain that we got the system we asked for.

No argument at all, both parties and the whole system these days sucks. And it's our own damned fault. We watched the shows, we voted them in, then reelected them, we echoed every conspiracy theory and accusation, and we never demanded better. We had every opportunity to see it coming and people have been warning us about it for years. We just couldn't be bothered to care.

Hero Cop Saves Suicidal Woman From Rooftop

EMPIRE says...

Saving someone's life IS great, and wonderful. It is not automatically heroic. That depends on how the life was saved. A guy who throws himself on a grenade to save the lifes of his comrades is heroic. A paramedic saving someone's life on a very normal situation, is not heroic at all. It should be respected, and valued, but it's not heroic. However, a paramedic trying to save someone shot, in a crossfire, is indeed a hero.

Basically, if your life was not in jeopardy (directly or indirectly) you're not a hero for saving someone's life.

edit: wait, that's not right actually. If there's no self-sacrifice involved, you're not a hero. It shouldn't need to be at the cost of your own life. Let's say someone who gives away absolutely everything they have to try and help others. That's a hero as well.

edit 2: Oh, and today I ate some donuts, so yeah, I'm a god damn hero!

Tommy Chong Confronts "War on Drugs" Profiteer

MaxWilder says...

Let me see if I can understand Chabot's argument:

"Marijuana is hazardous to your health, so we should route all the profits to massive criminal organizations, and spend tax money fighting those criminal organizations, all while innocent people get killed in the crossfire."

Is that about right?

Or we could do the sensible thing: legalize, regulate, educate, rehabilitate. If we did this for all drugs, those deadly gang wars would end overnight. And addicts could seek treatment without the fear of imprisonment.

PROHIBITION DOES NOT WORK!

Upvote for "I don't know the kind of sway a president can have on an economy."

We as sifters love Jon Stewart, but we shouldn't. Because, he is against all forms of sensationalism. The likes of which we all get so many upvotes for.

I'm kinda glad this interview was more resolute than Crossfire. But I would not have minded seeing it go that way either.
