Nauti-Craft Marine Suspension Technology

SFOGuy says...

Not just throwing rocks, but---what is the practical application of this? As a pleasure craft, maintaining all those extra hydraulics would drive maintenance expenses through the roof from the perspective of a recreational boater.
I'm also concerned about reliability, elevation of center of gravity, response to being sideways in a seaway... the second half with the outrigger "sled' maybe would have application in military stuff? Air/Sea rescue?

I finally girded myself and read the babe article. So painful on so many levels.

We are so clueless as human beings, I swear.

The one thing that I hadn't read about before was the screenshot of the text she wrote him the next day. She was quoted as saying, in several accounts, that while it might have been fun for him, it wasn't for her. Even in the babe article, it lists her response as beginning that way.

What I don't remember reading anywhere else was this shortened excerpt:

Aziz: Hey it was fun meeting you last night. [Something about cameras]

Grace: Hey Aziz, it was fun meeting you too. [Something in response to cameras]

Oh dear. This is what I have been saying since #metoo has started.

Our socialization has us saying, politely, "it was fun meeting you".

No. No it wasn't. And yet she felt compelled socially -- and was helped in crafting a response by her friends, according to babe! -- to soften the truth, which came next. Clearly and directly.

Women need to learn to be more direct and less polite. And we need to train our girls early about their right to speak their truth.

I don't blame Grace for her frozen inaction. She wasn't taught anything different as a child.

Let's teach our children to speak their truth, yeah?

Just how smart is Donald Trump?

notarobot says...

@moonsammy:

Have a look at this interview from 1980. Pay attention to the patterns of his speech. Notice how they are different than the example used in the Nerdwriter analysis I posted above.

http://www.msnbc.com/documentaries/watch/today-show-1980-with-donald-trump-589527619719

At a later interview (1988?) you can hear that the patterns in his speech are a bit closer to the Nerdwriter. You can hear how he occasionally repeats words. He has had more practice with interviews here than in 1980 and it shows. How he crafts his speech is not a product of an untrained mind--it is intentional.

The way he dodges the "are you smarter than other people?" question is also interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmClYIQqEn8

Again, I'm not arguing that he's a genius. Just that assumptions of his intellect based on the choice to use simple language have been mistaken. His choice to use simple language is a big part of what gave him broad appeal among voters for whom higher education was out of reach. It may have won him the presidency.

I don't like him, but he isn't stupid.

Just how smart is Donald Trump?

notarobot says...

Ugh. Unpopular opinion incoming....

Trump is no genius, but he's smart enough to have learned how to talk dumb. He's trained himself to speak using simple language. How he speaks, and how he crafts the public's perception of himself is no accident. This has worked to his advantage both in appeal to those... less educated than himself, and in negotiations, when opponents might underestimate him, as all his opponents did during the last election.

/unpopular opinion.

Now to be clear, I don't like Trump. Just stating what I see. He isn't stupid.

The Art of Making a Nixie Tube

robbersdog49 says...

That's a very interesting video. He's making lovely, handmade electronics, something you just don't see at all any more.

It's at times an almost painfully inefficient process. Robots are taking a lot of jobs from people, but I think there will always be a market for such hand made, hand crafted goods. Each one is different. They're a little wonky, a little taller, shorter, whatever. A machine would make them much better in every objective way. Faster, more consistent and more reliable. But it could never give them the charm they so obviously have.

Inside View of Soyuz Crew Capsule From Undocking to Landing

Ashenkase says...

Diagram of re-entry for the Soyuz:
---------------------------------------------
http://spaceflight101.com/soyuz-tma-20m/wp-content/uploads/sites/77/2016/09/6618866_orig.jpg

Orbital Module:
---------------------
It houses all the equipment that will not be needed for reentry, such as experiments, cameras or cargo. The module also contains a toilet, docking avionics and communications gear. Internal volume is 6 m³, living space 5 m³. On the latest Soyuz versions (since Soyuz TM), a small window was introduced, providing the crew with a forward view.

Service Module:
---------------------
It has a pressurized container shaped like a bulging can that contains systems for temperature control, electric power supply, long-range radio communications, radio telemetry, and instruments for orientation and control. A non-pressurized part of the service module (Propulsion compartment, AO) contains the main engine and a liquid-fuelled propulsion system for maneuvering in orbit and initiating the descent back to Earth. The ship also has a system of low-thrust engines for orientation, attached to the Intermediate compartment. Outside the service module are the sensors for the orientation system and the solar array, which is oriented towards the sun by rotating the ship.

Consequences of bad jettisons:
------------------------------------------
The services modules are jettisoned before the spacecraft hits the atmosphere. A failure or partial jettison of the modules means that the capsule will not enter the atmosphere heat shield first which can lead to a number of scenarios:
- Capsule pushed off course (by hundreds of km)
- High sustained g-loads on reentry
- Plasma on reentry can burn through the craft if the heat shield is not exposed and oriented properly resulting in loss of crew.

NYC's Best Burger, Explained

newtboy jokingly says...

Yep, and I've been with her for 25 years.
I'm quite reasonable, except when I'm spoon fed bullshit being called fact, especially scientific fact, extra especially when it's crafted as a backhanded insult designed to make me feel bad for my actions and guilt me into mirroring yours.

She would never do that, she knows I don't let that slide, and that I notice details and understand science and would ask her to defend it with accepted facts.....impossible with bullshit....or be contradicted.
You know that too, unless you've forgotten our past conversations.

The repeal is here:

I like that rules crafted over 5 years,

B/C, fuck water, right?? Ask the people in Flynt, you can get by without it. If they're inconvenienced, it's probably just because they are liberal frail snowflakes.

That's what they get for not being born into a millionaire's family.

Psych! - Example was not actually cold-welding.

His second example, the Galileo Jupiter mission, didn't explain why we *thought* cold-welding was a result of a malfunction, and I've no idea how that information would come about because the craft never returned to earth.

wtf? Are these shows really getting so bad? I had more respect for this guy.

It's supposed to be a no-wake zone

SFOGuy says...

Correct; Azipods. However, I thought that might be a bit of a technical reach. You know, as a skipper of a smaller craft, I'm expected to use some judgement---if the winds are too great, don't take my boat out. I think the skipper and pilot here screwed up.

But maybe someone can offer more perspective.

Payback said:

There seems to be a lot of wind. Even with tugs, there was going to be a problem. The ship doesn't have "thrusters" in the usual sense, but the main drive is on pivoting nacelles or "azipods". To keep from running aground in the winds, they obviously had to ramp them up beyond what would normally be used.
