Van Morrison - Into the Mystic

my15minutes says...

sorry, schmawy, but you were right.
still couldn't find your original post anywhere.

consolation is, apparently no one sifted the original album version, so that's what i replaced it with, for now. and a lot of us got to see the version you sifted, and we wouldn't have otherwise.

Graphics card woes

Gutspiller says...

Yeah, I've been a fan of CoD, but am slowly losing interest as they are getting worse each year, despite them putting 3 different devs on each new release.

Ghosts was published by Activision, but I know what you mean about the publishers pushing for a certain release whether a game is done or not. Seems like the last few years devs have been trying to skip the quality assurance phase, and it's only hurt them and their brand in my eyes.

I'm glad to hear that at least CoD is selling less these days... I can only hope it's enough to show the publisher to not skip that optimization phase of development, and to make sure their game runs better on all different setups of PCs, and not solely making sure it runs smooth on consoles.

ForgedReality said:

Based on reviews, Ghosts was not only a terrible port but just a terrible game in general. EA tends to push their devs to release things more quickly rather than with higher quality. I wouldn't doubt that at least contributed negatively to your experience.

Crossfire and SLI can be dicey though just because the GPU's have to know how to talk back and forth and stay in sync with each other, which just escalates the probability that something can go wrong either from the game developers' end or from driver support . Single GPUs are plenty powerful these days, so I'm right there with you with the single GPU approach. I've not gone back to multi-GPU since my 4870x2 many years ago (which usually had issues due to ATI constantly breaking the drivers and then having to fix it again every other update).

Star Wars Battle Pod From Concept to Cockpit

Lulz. There is not even ONE "video arcade" left in my town, probably not 2 on the entire west coast up here. Consoles killed the arcade. Why bother making this?

Pixel

billpayer says...

@newtboy There are shots that are definitely real time and certainly in sync (20-25sec & 30-40sec are good examples), at least as far as 24fps video goes

Any console and most phones or laptops bought in the past couple of years are powerful enough to generate this stuff in real time.

Conservative Christian mom attempts to disprove evolution

shinyblurry says...

Hi Ravioli,

I guess that's a fair question. For starters, that would be a contradiction to what God has said about Himself:

Isaiah 45:5-6

I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other.

If God was not who He claimed to be, I could no longer worship Him according to His desire because we are told He is seeking those who will worship Him in Spirit and in truth:

John 4:23-24

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

If the truth was different than what God claimed, it would be inconsistent with His desire to be worshiped in spirit and truth.

What the bible says about Gods truthfulness is that it is impossible for Him to lie:

Hebrews 6:18 so that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us,

I trust that He is telling the truth, and that He is in a better position to know that than I am. The resurrection of His Son gives me ample reason to put my hope and trust in Him for my eternity. Thanks and God bless!

South Park Accurately Sums up Freemium Games

Magicpants says...

Dude, 20 years is a long time to go without eating.
People were paying up front for games 20 years ago... so yes.

Anyway I've worked for several free to pay companies, and while South Park almost gets it right, they've missed an important aspect. It's all about landing whales, the vast majority of people do not, and never will pay for a game, I think the percentage of players who pay is something like 0.3% So it's all about making the whales feel important, they are essentially paying the developers for the admiration of other players. Anyway, I got out of free to play because I think it leads to bad game design (something the South Park video gets right.)

This is of course different from PC to console and mobile. With mobile being the worst, but PC MMOs, for example, have almost all gone free to play.

The bottom line is that if you're not paying for something, odds are whoever owns (and pays for it) it will have to end up selling you.

It's pretty obvious dude. The Koch bros are just nice guys trying to help protect the average shmo from corrupt cops. And he's right. Sometimes I get upset thinking to myself god damn there is so much corruption and manipulation but then I console myself knowing that the Koch bros are out there having my back. Thanks Koch bros!

I take issue with that... I don't own any over priced consoles!

Completely guilty of the rest though

And on that note, anyone got any recommendations for a good HOTAS setup? Preferably one that won't require a second mortgage (I'm looking at you, warthog!)

Colbert interviews Anita Sarkeesian

SDGundamX says...

@Enzoblue

Thunderf00t is probably the least level-headed response you will find. His video is terrible for a lot of reasons, mostly because he does all the same things Anita Sarkessian is accused of doing (for example, cherry-picking) to an exponential degree, but I recommend you watch it anyway and draw your own conclusions.

As much as some Gamergate supporters would like the movement to be about ethics in gaming journalism, it has its roots in a witch-hunt started by claims from a jilted ex-boyfriend that his girlfriend (Zoe Quinn) slept with reporters to get good reviews--claims that were later shown to be completely untrue but not before the Gamergate movement had found a cause to rally around. From the very start, the movement had trouble separating actual journalistic ethical problems (i.e. gifts from game publishers to game reviewers... see pretty much any tweet or video by TotalBiscuit about Gamergate for a reasoned overview of the problems) from anti-feminist screeds against Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian, and later Brianna Wu. And it only got worse over time.

To understand why people might be opposed to Sarkeesian's critiques, you should probably read: this article. Just to summarize the article's main thesis: there is a group of gamers out there who refuse to see a problem with the status quo and make the claim that anyone trying to point out a problem is demanding special privileges. This is not to say that Sarkeesian's critiques aren't without flaws. It is rather to explain how so many people got enraged by her analysis that they felt the need to personally attack her.

So, to put it in a nutshell, there ARE some problems with gaming journalism but they are akin to the same kinds of problems entertainment journalism has in general (Colbert's point). But there are also some serious problems with gaming culture that were brought under the magnifying glass by the whole Gamergate phenomenon.

Frankly, as a "hardcore gamer" (30+ years of gaming experience including games across dozens of consoles and the PC), watching the "debate" on the topic has been embarrassing to say the least. Gaming was finally overcoming the stigma and stereotypes that it had been shackled with before this thing blew up and made us look like the bunch of socially inept man-babies the rest of society assumed we were.

I think not only is it going to take years for our social image to recover, it is going to take years to overcome the toxicity that has pervaded the debate. People on both sides are seriously butt-hurt about how everything went down and the back and forth has been more on the emotional side than the intellectual, leading to lots of flame wars and very little critical reflection.

Level headed response and breaks down this social crusader for what she really is.

Someone thats making noises to get money for her videos / books whatever. She sounds reasonable, until you hear the other side....and then you cant fathom how you could have ever believed her bullshit to begin with.

Bloodborne gameplay trailer -Hidetaka Miyazaki's new game

artician says...

So, basically, the next Dark Souls.

Which is fine, because I enjoy those games. Character and enemy designs look great, but at this point they're just regurgitating a formula. It looks foreboding, it's probably going to be brutally difficult, there will be some interesting monsters and probably a convoluted, western-style dark fantasy plot. That's the same thing that Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 offered to a 'T'.
Someone no one else has ever agreed with me from the game industry is personal reinvention, and I wish consumer demand was more fickle for less repetitive offerings.
I *might* play this, but after 3 games, multiple playthroughs of each (because I loved them so much), I'm pretty much over it. Plus, fuck next gen consoles, I could have gotten another 5 years from the current crop. I expect truly talented developers to innovate when they're lauded for their perceived innovation from past successes. Tackling an entirely different genre in the same way the *Souls games were throwbacks to more unforgiving times, or taking the extremes from the previous entries to completely unexpected heights.
There are so many fucking vectors of unexplored progress in the medium that it never surprises me when industry reports year-over-year declines for half a decade, and infuriates me to the point that I wish it would all just fucking die already, wipe out the failures, and rebuild it with this millenniums version of the NES. It's not even about finding "completely new, unexplored methods of interactive media", because you can continue to build on the genre's that exist with a 4-decade-old toolbox that an entire industry only recognizes the most recently opened drawer of.
