Male Novelist Jokes

SDGundamX says...

...wtf did I just watch? I'm assuming these are parodied lines from actual novels (with presumably male authors)? I don't get the subtext here though... as if female novelists don't ever write shitty cliched lines in their fiction?

Artist makes perfect shiny balls of mud (Hikaru Dorodango)

Payback says...

No, you're right. It's more cliched than following a ballistic trajectory over an aquatic predator . Shark jumping is the point where stupid things have to happen to try to keep something relevant. This is just overuse.

oritteropo said:

It used to be really hard and/or expensive to get these types of shots, so they were used sparingly and only when they really made sense.

Now that they're cheap and easy they're being a bit over-used.

I don't think that it's exactly the drone shots that are starting to jump the shark, but the fad of using them everywhere, all the time, for no reason other than because we can (and good riddance too).

Pete's Dragon Official US Teaser Trailer

woman destroys third wave feminism in 3 minutes

Jinx says...

Damn women trying to hog all the equality to themselves.

A lot of this seems like semantics but....

Many of the issues that men face are due to the same institionalised gender inequality that feminism seeks to rectify. The suicide rates, the custody bias etc is a product of 1000s of years of patriarchy. That strong silent stoic cliche of masculinity is a fantasy (with real damage) dreamed up by the same society that put women's place in the kitchen. Its all the same poison.

Feminism isn't oppositional to men's rights. I consider myself a feminist not just because I want women to be paid the same as me, but because I think its a movement that seeks to create a society that is better for men too. I'd call myself a masculist but I'm afraid that term has probably been tainted too much by those who see it as a sort of counter-movement to feminism.

So yeah. A lot of what she says is quite true but my experience of feminism has not been this bizzaro version where it is all about women getting what women want. Most of my friends are feminist, all of my close family are...none of them are like that. I guess a lot of it comes down to the fact that ideas that make you angry spread more, and that's why there is this twisted perception of feminism when I think the reality of the movement is quite different.

Everything is Terrible -- Just Ask God with Rap

visionep says...

Didn't seem that terrible. Pretty good production value and they weren't doing anything horribly cliche or out of sorts for the 80's.

Was there something that I missed in there? I'm always interested in understanding places that my perspective differs with others.

Teen arrested by 9 cops for jaywalking

ulysses1904 says...

I've had it, after using it for 22 years the internet has become so freakin stale. Same old lazy know-it-all spectators who couldn't walk a mile in their own shoes, much less anybody else's. The predictable drama queen cliches about revolution and fascism and cop trolling and "he's just a kid" and race baiting and "I'm the face of the oppressed" and all the fake controversy and forced celebrities and all the shit-eating selfies. This clumsy new interface on Videosift made me realize it takes more mouse clicks just to read the same old crap. It's been fun.

Cibo Matto - Sugar Water

Fail Forward : Deus Ex - Human Revolution

00Scud00 says...

I still don't think the scenario they present is that far fetched, people today regularly get operations that they personally could not possibly afford, but insurance covers it. Vets returning from wherever we're fighting then getting hooked up, most vets are probably not rich by any definition. Then get a few rich backers like David Sarif and scientific advocates like Hugh Darrow and you can frame it as a quality of life issue, or even a productivity issue.
You're right about the super limbs not being too practical or likely, I would also add illegal to that list, no beat cop wants to face off against Robocop. But I wonder if even slightly stronger limbs might pose problems of their own? Say you have one of your legs replaced with a cybernetic limb, if that one is stronger than your other meat leg, I wonder if you might not end up favoring that one and that screws up you normal gait, generating a whole bunch of new problems.
The kid in the video we see getting abused seems to only have a cyber leg, I'm not sure how much good a single leg is going to be in a fight, or flight for that matter especially if you are hugely outnumbered. Adam is a different story of course, he was clearly built for combat and infiltration.
The cynic in me would readily agree with the scenario where the wealthy wind up with everything but that sounds almost too perfect and cliche. So I think there's room for other possible futures.

So either way, I still don't think we'll see a "prosthetic underclass".

Bill Maher: New Rules – June 12, 2015

gorillaman says...

My race, whatever that might be, doesn't throw people into prison for failure to obscure arbitrarily-chosen areas of their body from sacred mountains. Sounds like a pretty good race to me.

How did you become such a cliche that you'll defend any act of fascism in the name of cultural sensitivity, and cry racism at anyone who prefers freedom to religious domination?

racism... nice.

Chinese Couples vs. Western Couples

lucky760 says...

Just to explain my confusion: You made a pretty strong point about a single, very specific topic in in the video. That's an indication you just took issue with that joke.

Of course simply relating to a cliche doesn't make it funny. The video made it funny. To some.

ChaosEngine said:

I would have thought that calling a joke old, and "lazy cliched nonsense" would have pretty strongly indicated I thought it was unfunny.

I can relate to plenty of the behaviours depicted, the same way I can relate to bad airline food, queueing for a driver's licence or any other tired comedy cliche. Doesn't make it funny.

Your criticism wasn't that it was unfunny, but that it was old, cliched nonsense.

Like any comedy it clearly won't (and couldn't) speak to everyone, especially if you relate to none of the stereotypical behaviors portrayed, but it seemed a little stilted to palm your lack of enjoyment off on cliche.

Frankly, it was borderline racist and definitely sexist, but the real problem was that it was just boring and unfunny.

I watched more than half the video because I was hoping it was going to get better. It didn't.

Sorry if thinking a comedy video should be funny counts as "trolling".

Chinese Couples vs. Western Couples

GenjiKilpatrick says...

Ugh, really? Were you not hugged as a child?

Is that why you always nay-say and intentionally miss the point of every video?

- Firstly, cliche & stereotypes can still be humorous or provoking..

It's part of the reason they become overused, lots of people can relate.

- Secondly, THE VIDEO IS COMPARING THE CLICHES PRESENT IN CHINESE VS AMERICAN RELATIONSHIPS!!

Wtf, man. That's the point of the video.

To give both types of couple a little chuckle and go "yeah, that's definitely us".

For comedy purposes.. cause it's a comedy youtube channel..

If you don't find cliches funny, wtf would you watch more than half the video..?

Shit man, wonder what trivial shit 80-year-old Chaos is gonna complain about.

"Eggs for breakfast!? Why are we still serving people EGGS for breakfasts?!"

"Hah, women take money from their husbands!"

That joke was old when Married with Children did it. Hell, it was old when the Jetsons did it.

David Hasselhoff - True Survivor

kir_mokum says...

the video effect is bad chromatic aberration which is an artifact of a bad lens. it's standard for movies and TV shows with no budget. blood dragon was just drawing from the same influences (80s-early 90s action/fantasy movies/TV, foreign action fantasy movies, taiwanese movies, hong kong movies, telugu movies, possibly nigerian movies) and the underground popularity of synthwave, chillwave, even italodisco, and chiptune. kung fury could have pull some influence from blood dragon but both are based on 30 year old cliches so that influence is a bit meaningless since the source material is so redily available.

ChaosEngine said:

This is a bit more specific than just general 80s kitch. Even the video effect was very Blood Dragon, along with the dude riding a dinosaur
