Science: Toddler Internally Decapitated is Healed

Be Crocwise - Crocodile safety rap from NT

blackfox42 says...

Little late to the party, but it was done by different people. According to this article it was done by Michael Roseth (illustrator and creator) & Kamahi Djordan King ( songwriter and performer).

It is, isn't it? That was the first thing I noticed about it too... I just couldn't find out whether that was because the same people did it, or whether the second group just liked the dumb ways to die animation.

Childhood's End Trailer

SpaceOddity says...

Childhood's End is the first, and - I loathe to admit - at this point the sole, Arthur C. Clarke book I have read.
It struck a chord in me so deep I hesitate to pick up another of his works for fear of no longer being able to function in modern society.

Helium Infused Beer - Fantastic Idea

newtboy says...

Why have they bothered lying about this? I don't get it.

Obviously fake, as was pointed out, you have to breath helium for it to change your voice It's a function of sound waves traveling through a different gas density, the same reason your voice goes lower when breathing nitrous oxide. The gas doesn't change your vocal chords as some people seem to think.

Gutfeld Schools Geraldo: PPH debate. Explosive debate

newtboy jokingly says...

How dare they make fun of our propaganda!?!

Good job calling the Fox News team "comedians" though....terrible comedians, but that's a good description of their profession.
Astonishing to see Geraldo be the voice of reason in any context.

These people can't even understand separating the funding, which is kept separate by law, and not a penny of public money goes to abortion, by law, a law written by their party.
Just like they can't understand that there's no such thing as full term, live birth abortion. It does not exist. When you kill a child that was born, that's not abortion.

At least these 'comedians' are willing to say they believe 'you don't have the right to donate organs'.

This really needs to be removed from the education channel, Fox is the opposite of education.

Here's hoping that all of "The Five" have spinal chord injuries that can only be treated with treatments derived from fetal tissue....EDIT: or Parkinson's, or AIDS, or diabetes, or Huntington's, or etc. I'm certain they've already used numerous vaccines derived from fetal tissue research, so they have no moral superiority when denouncing the medical benefits, only hypocrisy.

Homeless Mustard covers "Creep" by Radiohead

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I never get tired of hearing covers of this song, as I said almost six years ago in this same thread, the song has power.

On reflection, I think it's the chords. Something about that melancholy shift from F major to minor.

Chinese Couples vs. Western Couples

MilkmanDan says...

I liked it a lot, but then again I'm in a Western/Eastern mixed marriage also. Maybe that helps.

To each his own, but one thing that really rang true for me was Western PC-ness and being judgmental vs Eastern pragmatism. Last time I visited home (US) with my wife and daughter, *everybody* (strangers on up to family) gave unsolicited advice / criticism of parenting decisions (breast vs bottle, diapers vs cloth, etc. etc.), all acting like they know best. Everybody is a critic / doctor / psychologist / scientist all wrapped into one. Here in Thailand, that never happens -- there is moderate reluctance to step on toes even if you *ask* for advice. There isn't anything inherently "right" or "wrong" about either way, but as someone who has lived in two separate cultures, the video's portrayal of that general mentality really struck a chord with me.

No offense to those that didn't enjoy it; comedy can never be all things to all people.

And I totally found a lot of humor in it personally on both sides of the equation that relate to me (Westerner) and my wife (Easterner).

Tel Aviv - Incredible Amateur Audio/Video Mashup

Sagemind says...

That comment is a reflection on what I hear on a daily basis.
Perhaps my wordage is off, but the stuff coming at us 24-7 is created by studios, not musicians. So much of what I hear is produced by guys sitting at mixer boards and computers.
My comment isn't aimed at every person out there making music, in fact I know there are lots of musicians out there with talent and skill..., but we never get to hear them over all the crap being dealt out by the industry which is breeding Egos as musicians. (I'd choose Beck over Beyonce any day of the week.)

Sure, I know, it may seem like I'm digging a hole and jumping in but the system is broken and the good music is being squelched. Maybe not 100% of the time, but listen to the music. The electronic age is filtering everything out of the music, no more drummer, no guitar, auto tune, synthetic voice. where is all the character? Where are all the happy accidents that real music serves us. How many of today's artistes (on the charts) can serve us music without a guy mixing it to make them sound good, double tracking, and keeping their voices in tune? I know these tricks have been used for years but never to the extent they are being used today.

I remember a quote by Niel Young, way back when he was recording. The guys at the board keep telling him he wasn't hitting the note, and his answer was "Hey, that's my style man!" So they had to leave it in, and the result was great. Pure Niel Young.

So, I guess it's not so much the musicians out there, so much as it is the recording studios, and the system of pump out the next clone hit...

It was Tony James that initiated this era, back when he created Sigue Sigue Sputnik. He had a dream, a vision of what the band looked and sounded like. He hired people that looked like what he wanted, none could play music, he taught them three chords and they they became the number one, unrecorded, unsigned band in history, and EMI finally Won (relative term) by offering them the most money. From that point all the music was produces electronically in the studio. It sounded like crap, but I loved it. It was new and sounded different. And people ate it up. The studios caught on, and realized they didn't need musicians any more, they always wanted money. It made more sense to hire nobodies, they were a dime a dozon and they could be made to sound any way they wanted them too. Just like the Boy Bands and Girl Bands (Spice girls, Pussy Cat Dolls)

Okay... so I'm rambling now..., it's been a long day...
The industry feeds us synthetic garbage because it's cheep, makes money and is easily replaced by the next song/artist.

Meanwhile the real artists are doing everything they can to get recognized and struggle to make a living giving us their soul served in a song and doing everything they can to be heard over the sounds of the industry.

school of life-what comes after religion?

lantern53 says...

Just like most things, belief can swing back and forth like a pendulum. But that pendulum will never swing one way (toward atheism) and stop.

Because a belief in a higher power is hard-coded into our DNA. Religion is man's attempt to interpret this. Some interpretations are more accurate than others, but 'whatever floats your boat'. There is great diversity in the creation, and great diversity in Man's interpretation of belief systems.

Atheism is also a belief. It requires a great deal of faith. Atheists are the few dissonant chords allowed in the symphony. But if you are drawn to that dissonance, you are out of tune.

The fish doesn't have to believe in the ocean. It's always there and sustains the fish. But the fish can't live outside of it.

Stay With Me - Vintage 1940s "Old Hollywood" Style Sam Smith

ChaosEngine says...

Wow, that is such bullshit.

Not a fan of Sam Smith, but there's no way Petty should get a songwriting credit for that.

The tempo and tone and key have completely changed.

Granted, the songs use a similar chord progression... but so what? There are only a limited number of chord progressions that sound musical, so of course you'll see repeats.

Ray Mears WILD lunch

A10anis jokingly says...

I've always said that, were I to be marooned in some wilderness, Ray Mears would be my first choice for companion.

I would dispatch him quickly, cutting his spinal chord and, using the dog wood, would skewer him up his alimentary canal. Very nice eating, which should last me till rescue arrives...

The Down-Tuning Experiment

SquidCap says...

You are right, what i was saying is mostly about audio quality. You can not have a sharp fast complex attack on very low notes. No matter what the instrument is. B is about the lowest, after that you need to make drastic equalizations to get that sharpness back. Also the chord structure "widens" it's intervals the lower you go. With B tune, you can barely make fifths. Once octave higher and you get thirds. If you go 7 octaves higher, you can even use seconds... Allthou Bmin9 sounds AWESOME on B, not very pretty or even recognizable, it's just rumble..... But it sounds clearer around E, aka Breath on Floyds Dark Side of the Moon....

ChaosEngine said:

I dunno. Mastodon seem to manage ok on standard neck length down to A# or even A.

I didn't find this riff "heavy" at all.
It's not the tuning that makes a song heavy, it's a whole bunch of things.

Sepulturas Roots Bloody Roots is in B and Panteras 5 Minutes Alone is in D. Can you honestly say that Roots is that much heavier? Would 5 Minutes Alone be heavier in B?

The riff itself is obviously important, but also what the drums are doing, the production, the tone, etc.
