I'm not sure I'd say that anyone at a university cannot be a child. In many cases, 18-20 year olds -are- children...especially if they've been subject to such conditioning as she appears to have had. Yes, she should be challenging the dogma she was taught, but I've no personal idea how difficult that is do conceive of, much less to do. Do you? That's not an accusation, but an honest question. My parent's raised me to question everything and to make decisions based on evidence. I've got no way to even estimate how difficult it would be to break out of the opposite sort of training. I can't imagine it would take less than an extreme effort.

Fully agree on the last point...I'd love to think she'll start thinking for herself, and that this might even have been the turning point. The prof was far kinder and gentler than I could have been (my frustration would have shown quite clearly), and it'd be nice to think that will pay off in the long run.

Calling them idiots? This coming from a person not understanding the job they are performing. The two on the roof are relieving pressure in the building as well as creating ingress and egress points, ingress for the water and egress for the fire pressure.

Building fires create a serious amount of pressure due to the expanding air in a very confined, and pretty well insulated, environment. This is the same actions you see firefighters breaking out windows to expel a large portion of said pressure. It also allows a fire to expand in a more controlled and less volatile way (see: explosive backdrafts).

The guy using the 'poker' is looking for structural weakness, both for the safety of the crew on the roof, as well as the 'cutter' to have the most direct access to the higher 'heat areas'.

I enjoy music of all types, trust me. I know the history. I grew up in a radio station, and remember when DJs were the rock Stars of the 70s.

I have no boundaries, and in fact, the more music pushes the boundaries the better, but I still have to feel the groove.
Often, "musicians," get caught up in the medium and forget the composition. I know - I'm an artist, I've been there, created works, not for composition, but to better understand my medium. It's still art, but it's not "ART."

See what I'm saying. There is a whole new generation of not just musicians and composers, but listeners. they have their own new sound, but a lot of the soul is getting filtered out while the artists explore the medium. I know it will come full circle, but I believe we are in a stagnant period of exploration.

And no, I'm not commenting on all those classical musicians, in fact, they are doing the opposite. There are many classical musicians that are taking their instruments in new directions - finally - and breaking out of the Bach & Beethoven standards. (Stereotyping here). My favorite is Stravinsky, who pushed every boundary of his day. and Guys like Rossini, who was the Heavy Metal Rocker of his day. But there comes a time, to break out and use the instruments differently.

And that's what they are doing right now. Breaking out and exploring. Which is great, it will define another period in music. But we're not quite there yet. Publishers and studios, are the bottom feeders, trying to keep the industry alive, but they are manufacturing the lowest common denominator, giving the public some of the most contrived music of our day.

It's okay to criticize music as it evolves and still like it.
If we don't criticize it, then it doesn't evolve. And I think the artists themselves would agree because, once you stop and consider your groves perfect, then there is no point creating more.

You can come to the defense of the genre, but not every piece is perfect. Yes there are better musicians out there, and some worse, and some I like, you won't like, and so on, that's what makes it great. I remember laying on the couch listening to Kraftwork's Autobahn for hours and loving it. That was over 25 years ago. And I've listened to so much more in between. I've heard it, I've studied it in school, spun discs and worked DJ booths, and was literally raised in a radio station. I've heard a lot, and have the knowledge to compare notes.

I'll end this, it's going too long - but suffice to say, this piece here, is okay, but has no crescendo, nothing to keep me on the edge. The grove becomes quite trance, while trying not to be. He's done a great mix up, and I see what he's doing here. He's taken video excerpts and contained and arranged them together. Great... he's experimenting. But it's not perfect, and that's okay. He's worked hard to create something, and as he evolves, he'll create better, that's what it's all about

Well, I don't disagree, but it's not as easy as that. She's a rescue, and was not trained at all when we got her. I've gotten her to sit, down, stay, close the door, etc. but stopping her from being friendly isn't something I want, and having her be friendly while not accepting food, that's higher level training than I'm qualified for. ;-)
Fortunately it's not a constant issue, and is one that I solve by paying attention when we're out together, and parking my 45 year old bronco in the bushes on one side so people have no access to the window. At home, it's really not an issue now that I have informed the UPS guy (Fed Ex doesn't open my gate) and I have a good fence back from the street, and we live in the boondocks on a dead end dirt road, so there's hardly traffic. My neighbors know, so it's taken care of well enough with no break outs in well over a year now.

He's raised the bar so much for his style of humor, the last few things he's produced don't tickle me as much as his earlier 'break-out' stuff, but it's a good thing. This was just a hilarious as his previous material, and I'm glad he continues to consistently deliver.

That depends on your definition of 'often'. Maybe about once a week on average.
It seems you're missing the point. Sometimes that person may interact with my dog without me being present (like in this video), offering no possibility to instruct them about my dogs diet requirements. When I am present, they almost always ask first, and I ask them about the treat. If it's grain free, she gets a free treat. If not, I usually offer the person a grain free treat of my own to give to my dog (person still gets to interact with dog, dog gets treat, every one's happy). I do not rush out screaming at people over mistakes, but I do tell delivery people about her diet and ask them to please not give her the wrong treats, or she'll suffer for it later. They have all complied, but some have needed reminding.
Then there are random people on the street/in the park with boundary issues that just come up from behind and interact with random dogs on leashes without asking, or reach through a partially open car window to pet and feed a dog waiting inside, I find that rude and inappropriate, treat or not. Maybe that's my problem and not theirs, but someone needs to explain why if I'm to understand.
I do it for my dog, not my sense of control. It's not easy, cheap, or fun for me to keep her grain free. She breaks out in hives if she eats too much grain product. It's like someone offering a random non-speaking child some reses...not knowing if child might have a deadly peanut allergy. I understand it's intended as friendly, but that's why you should ask first, it might be harmful or deadly.

What else is finally getting attention? Something I didn't know about until recently -- the vast majority of sexual assaults in the military are against MEN. Which means men have been sexually assaulted for hundreds of years, a thought that breaks my heart.

This video addresses something that I have known for years -- that men have it bad, but until they start talking about it, nothing will change. Men have needed their own "liberation" movement, too -- to be free from the need to hide their "weakness."

I'm not sure that I would draw the conclusion that "I don't know that [women] have it as bad as we might think." Yes, they do. Women are still murdered by their partners at a much higher rate than men are.

What is changing is that we are learning that men have it worse than we collectively think.

Why this need to make this into a contest about who has it worse, anyway? Let's just fix the problems for us all, yeah?

I think that once men get real about how terrible it is to be under this pressure to be stoic, and masculine, and strong, and start to become their more authentic selves, the violence rate in our society will go down, and men's life spans will start to match women's.

That is just speculation, though.

Coincidentally I was thinking about this just this afternoon, because luckily I have nothing better to do at work than stand around contemplating gender politics; pleased and proud as I am of genderqueer crusaders trying to wrestle pronouns into shape, I've been generally unwilling to join them. Singularising plural pronouns is offensive to me on a practical and aesthetic level, Spivak's no damn good, you've got your zes and your hirs and your hens, it's a pain in the ass but as soon as we get some consensus and momentum it's going to be cool.
