TED Talk: Whitopia

Digitalfiend jokingly says...

Yay another thing to feel guilty about!

I'm going to have to really keep on my toes to ensure I'm not living in a Whitopia so that I'm not accidentally labelled a racist or white separatist.

I'm unsure what to make of this video, to be honest. Did this person poll the residents of each host town to determine why the moved there? Is the town mostly white because white people simply just want to only see white faces? Is it because they want to live amongst people that share similar cultural values, ideals, and belief systems? Is it just pure co-incidence? He sort of touched on that at one point in the presentation but then went back to suggesting it's bad to want security, a sense of community, etc ... if you're white.

I still don't understand what is inherently bad here; I guess I'm confused about the message. From what he told us, he was treated extremely well by the residents he interacted with. Is this a bad thing now? In my opinion, like-cultures seem to segregate themselves. For instance, in Canada we have portions of major city centres (even entire cities themselves) where the majority of the population is Chinese or Indian or Middle-Eastern or African Canadian. I think this would hold true for the US as well. Does this automatically make the people of those communities racist, just because they co-located with each other or does that only apply to white people?

Lastly, was most of the audience high? I couldn't figure out what they were laughing at half the time.

Daily Show : Trump Weaponizes Victimhood to Defend Kavanaugh

ChaosEngine says...

Yes.... but at the same time clearly mocking her to anyone with half brain (so about 2% of his audience).

The same way that I can tell you that I think Trump is really, bigly smart and not at all a narcissistic, hobbit-handed, sexist, racist asshole and you can figure out that I'm not being 100% genuine.

The World Is Laughing At Us

lucky760 says...

No, no, you must not have seen Trump's explanation; they weren't laughing *at* him, they were laughing *with* him because as he put it, they "were having a good time" together.

Sickening how delusional and psychopathic the leader of our country is.

We are three-quarters the way to ^this -- we have ^that for our president, but only ~half of our citizens have ^that audience's reaction.

"STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE" Animotion Trailer

Sagemind says...

I'm not entirely against the Anime style, It's very fitting for the viewing audience of Japan.
BUT
The animation is terrible - I shocked that Disney/Lucusfilm would green-light this at such a low level production.

A Bowl Of Peanut Oil Catches 7 Mice In 1 Night

DuoJet says...

I hate this guy and his channel passionately. He's making tons of youtube bux torturing and killing various animals, primarily rodents. He's one of those "survivalist" wackjobs who has somehow found a enormous audience of people who seem to like watching videos of animals in pain.

And before anyone replies with something utterly moronic like, "dood relax their jus mice okey", I know what they are and I know that they struggle against losing their lives just as earnestly as humans do.

'I can think of nothing more American': Beto O’Rourke

newtboy says...

Poorly said and dead wrong.

You accept Trump, a consummate liar with an agenda determining their message rather than the protesters. That's your main mistake.

They are not protesting against the flag, anthem, or nation.
They are using their access to their own audience to spread their message that police misconduct must be addressed. If that's unseemly somehow, tell Trump to stop it first, because he's using OUR platform. When he hasn't tweeted for a full year, and hasn't used his position to personally attack citizens for the same time period, come back and we'll discuss what private citizens are obligated to do in America.

It bears noting, taking a knee is how service men often respect fallen soldiers and is clearly designated appropriate flag behavior, but wearing the flag as clothing is insanely disrespectful and totally not allowed by national flag rules, yet you never hear draft dodging Trump froth at the mouth over the mouth breathers surrounding him draped in the flag like a toga.

Only when you wake up to reality and stop letting a bad liar with no connection to the truth determine reality for you will your problem of constantly being ridiculously wrong be solved.

bobknight33 said:

Very well said but dead wrong.

The Flag symbolize you right to protest. Don't protest that right.
Have and event and protest.

Again pointing out cops killing blacks but the real issue is black on black ( Chicago ) ..

Only when reality wakes you up will the problem be fixed.

What the F*ck happened to Hip-Hop?

Mordhaus says...

The thing that is funniest to me is that the type of songs he talks about bringing back, other than the ballad of oj from a long time hip hop master, the song with the most true meaning came from a comedian/actor. This is America is the type of old school hip hop/rap song with meaning from the old days and it blew up, so the audience is there. Now we just need the 'disco' mumble rap people to change directions and get involved.

Unboxing w/ Joe Arpaio - Who Is America?

bobknight33 says...

If this Showtime show is what media producers is putting out and has an audience Its a clear sign that America needs more Joe Arpaios.

At lease Joe Arpaio is placating this fool. Sad that ignorant fools follow this show.

While it's all great fun mocking the old guy from Up crossed with Statler and Waldorf, it really doesn't gain anything.

People who hate him and Trump will laugh, people who support them will use it as evidence of the vast media conspiracy.

The real trick is actually getting through to people like him. Make him understand why the things he's done are wrong, why housing immigrants in a tent city without adequate protection and little to no recourse for the crimes committed there (including rape) is illegal. He'd probably just point out that the very fact the men are raping the women in an unregulated tent city goes to show how bad the Hispanic gene pool is, never understanding that any large enough group, regardless of ethnicity, upbringing etc. would commit similar crimes if placed under similar circumstances. Hell he defends his pussy-grabbing President out of the opposite corner of his mouth.

Educate your young people, America. Not just in math and science, but in Philosophy. That's the only way to create a morally advanced society. People shouldn't just judge right and wrong by what they're told, they should have an adequate education to figure it out for themselves. He was told (many times) what he was doing was right, so it doesn't matter that a judge came along and handed him a sentence. He believes he's right, simply because he lacks the mental capacity to understand otherwise.

Isn't that right, @bobknight33 ?

Black Panther — Creating an Empathetic Villain

ChaosEngine says...

Kingpin was a great villain, but I'm not sure I'd call him empathetic. You certainly see a human side to him, but he doesn't have any kind of goal the audience can get behind.

In fact, it's the disconnect between the urbane, kind man he is with his girlfriend and the ruthless, sadistic monster that makes him interesting.

D'Onofrio's Kingpin is another good example.
