Testing Your Metal

StukaFox says...

I was riding the bus in Paris, and all the streets in Paris were designed for anorexic horses in the 17th century and fuck you for trying to fit your fat-ass 21st century car down them -- much less a huge city bus. So we're squeezing down this street and we come across a moving truck blocking the road. I, as an America, am awaiting horns, swearing and automatic weapon fire. Instead, the driver stops the bus, turns it off, hops off and goes and has a smoke. The people in the bus were being totally French about it: not a murmur of complaint.

Two years later, I was in Canada and some dude cut off a taxi at a light. Out hops the taxi driver to confront the driver of the other car. I start scanning for my exit once pop-pop-pop / muthafuckas drop gets underway. Instead of a spray of bullets, or at least an amusing fist fight, the taxi driver shakes his finger at the guy and gets back in his cab.

I live in mortal fear of getting shot on the road in America over some stupid bullshit (this actually happened to me once: some asshole in Cupertino cranked off three rounds at my car when I accidentally cut him off). It's so amazing to visit civilized countries and see people acting decent and calm to each other.

Yeah. San Francisco isn't that affected by earth tilt.

I forgot about the flip of the seasons.

Every year, I get giddy with joy on the first day of winter, because I KNOW THE DAYS ARE GETTING LONGER. I might not see the difference immediately, but I know we are "on the mend."

Conversely, I get a tad bit sad on the first day of summer. Because I know the days are beginning to get shorter. It isn't a Newtonian "equal and opposite reaction" -- after all, it is still light out at 9:45 pm the next day. There is a soupcon, an egg wash, a slight breeze of sadness knowing that we have reached our apex and are headed downhill.

But for you? First day of summer is just the first day of summer, at that latitude.

Scary temps down there. And here our short-sighted, bought-by-big-money-interests-polticians are fighting the reality of climate crisis even as you guys bake.

My apologies from my continent to yours.

Thanks Melbourne is about 37° south, so in Northern hemisphere terms it should be roughly equivalent to San Francisco and largely unaffected. It's also mid Summer here, so Christmas day was (unusually) mid 30s (would be 90s in °F). Normally we'd have spring weather, but a few years ago it hailed on Christmas day, and my Dad remembers one year when he was young it was 102°F (which we had to convert to 39°C to decide was pretty hot).

Penn & Teller's Helium Bag Escape Trick

Payback says...

He was never inside the bag, it was wrapped around him.
Afterwards it wasn't as filled as much as before the lights out.

Penn & Teller's Helium Bag Escape Trick

Yeah, that's... Is the trick supposed to be that it happened so quickly? The lights out was kind of cheap, I think. I figured he was out of the bag as soon as he disappeared into it, and something else was going to unexpectedly happen.

Yeah, I'd punch someone's lights out if they ever walked past me in a speedo or said "quack quack" at me and immediately turned away.

How to Fix Christmas Lights Fast and Easy

alcom says...

Uh, yes it works. I tested it on some old outdoor mini lights and attempted to create one good string of good lights out of 3 partially-working strings. Unfortunately, one of the lights exploded and a piece hit my ceiling really hard! Fearing for my eyes, I abandoned the project.

I recommend just buying a new string of led lights

Put me on that list also. I have some lights that could use a fixin.

NIN - Came Back Haunted

Shepppard says...

I actually went to see the NIN/JA tour, when they went along with Janes addiction at the molson center, it was actually a bit disappointing. It's an outdoor venue, and because they played first it was still light out, so a lot of their effects were, well, lacking.

The band put on a helluva show other than that, though.

Coolest Cop Ever - Helping Not Hurting

A10anis says...

Taxes aren't paid to fund free bike lights for god's sake. They all looked as if they could afford a few dollars for lights. I've had a ticket for having a car light out, even though I didn't realize it was out. The cop didn't give me a free bulb. These people know they are breaking the law - not to mention being a danger to themselves and others - and deserve a ticket. What happens now, when another cop gives a lightless bike a ticket? No doubt they'll go to court and say they expected a free light. Nice gesture, but no sense to it.

@GenjiKilpatrick, you forgot rule #427,362: If Danny can't think of a way to improve a technology that he was just introduced to, off-hand, via information he learned in a two-minute video, then further innovation is clearly impossible.
>> ^dannym3141:
The only way i can imagine to get more visible light out of this, other than actually increasing the intensity of the light emitted per cell by the stuff...

@dannym3141: I too assumed that the cells were emitting the light, but if you read/watch it again, the cells are merely producing energy (via carbon somehow) that is stored in batteries. The light source is still just a light.

Perhaps you've forgotten rule #427,362 ammendment A which suggests you read things carefully to ensure you're not over reacting, for example when someone uses the phrase "genuine question" and then tries to explain their point more clearly and asks for clarification from the other.

I'm afraid i don't have time to read up on every technology that i see cool videos of, but lucky for me some other people do and if i ask nicely and sound interested i tend to find they're happy to explain it to me.

If you'd read my first post which actually started the matter i think you'd have understood my confusion and maybe not needed to be rude? Earlier i asked "why don't they shine the weak light onto a solar panel?" Well, it seems that kinda is what they do, thanks for letting me know

I'm surprised that someone as apparently vigilant to information as yourself (what with you knowing rule #427,362 so well) didn't even bother to read the original question. So when genji tells me "it would get better", i think the method of operation has been confirmed and then i try and use my understanding of how something like that might work to try and understand how it might be improved. Then, i try and discuss it.

I'm not going to apologise for trying to figure out and find out how something works.

@GenjiKilpatrick - genuine question; are you involved in this, or in other things that give you a good idea of exactly how something like this will develop? I'll explain myself better:

My assessment is that if you make this thing DEEPER, than you have a seeing depth element to the equation. The light on the inside (deeper) is going to have to make its way outside and i think it is likely to do this via infra red (ie. heating the whole thing).

The only way i can imagine to get more visible light out of this, other than actually increasing the intensity of the light emitted per cell by the stuff, is to make it very thin and with a huge surface area, but then you spread the light out over a bigger area and things like cost go way up.

Perhaps you can increase the density of the cells in the fluid, but then you're gonna have to worry about their access to the carbon - if you over fill, you may starve some of them of food; there may be a perfect ratio that he's already reached.

If you have a better assessment i'd love to hear it, but simply saying "it'll get better" doesn't cut it with me as there is no direct way i can see of making it better. I hope you can explain yourself a little better too, because i'd actually be happy to think it will get better.

Amazing, cause I was just thinking that I'd pay good money to watch a gang of police officers use excessive force on you.
Just remember, any officer is well within his or her right to kick, punch, taze, pile-drive, or shoot you in the back in order to ensure your compliance.
No matter how trivia the violation. (tag light out, no rollback after stopping, etc.)..
p.s.- i hear breathing and blinking and begging for mercy are very threatening and can be considered "resisting arrest".
You might wanna avoid doing those things if at all possible.
>> ^lantern53:
I would pay real money to watch some of you people do the work of police or jail officers.

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. But I see where you're coming from.
