Honest Trailers - Ghostbusters (2016)

dannym3141 says...

Of course, it didn't help that it really wasn't funny.

That's not to do with the all women cast though because I don't like most of the comedies from Hollywood - especially the ones from the new gang of male comedy leads that they just churn out one after another.

In fact, of all recent American comedies the ones that have stood out to me have been The Other Woman and The Heat, both of which are all female leads with very little male involvement. I can't think of any male led ones that I liked, certainly nowhere near as much as those two.

But one line that made a lot of sense in there was when it said "proves once and for all that girls can make middle of the road studio-mandated franchise bait just as well as the boys!" -- which is a really good point. Men are churning out all those shit comedies, why not women too? I don't like any of them, and they deserve equality in my apathy.

Jurassic World, Jurassic Values

poolcleaner says...

Jurassic Park fans only give a fuck about the dinosaurs, okay? Check the discussions at IMDB. I don't think the average moviegoer understands the concepts of morality and heroic action -- and neither do your average filmmakers.

They wanna see references to previous movies in the franchise and then see people terrorized by fucking dinosaurs while the heroes escape the carnage and fight them like it's a video game. And yeah its important that hot people are in the movie and that they hook up.

The older brother's character shows young boys that there are plenty of fish in the sea so who cares about your nagging girlfriend, go out and get some. Time for love when you're in your 30s. Everything leading up to that is a vagina, boobs, and a mouth.

Jurassic Park, fuck yeah.

Legion Official Trailer #1

moonsammy says...

Agents of SHIELD had a somewhat weak start, though decent. Season 2 was an improvement on 1, and season 3 was excellent in my opinion. So far it doesn't connect too directly to what happens in the films, but does seem to be doing a lot of legwork to set up for one of the future movies. If you like super hero stuff in general, it's worth a watch.

Note that Legion won't have any connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Avengers, Dr Strange, SHIELD, Daredevil, etc), as it is part of the Fox / X-Men universe instead. I've no idea if Fox will tie it to their film franchise, though I'd assume it would be pretty minimal as this appears to be set in our current era vs the films right now being a few decades back.

I've only heard bad things about Agents of Shield. Last I heard, they were doing drastic things that made it successfully mediocre.

I get wary of franchises that see success. I expect them to eventually cave to pandering, pathetic tropes. Present Marvel universe included, as their recent films have just... meh.

"Ghostbusters" Theme Japanese Remix

SDGundamX says...

This is interesting, because these ladies are famous (in Japan) Japanese comedians but I don't think they will actually be doing the voice-overs when the film comes to Japan (won't be out here for months). On the YouTube page for this video, it explains that these ladies are members of the Japanese Ghostbusters' "branch office," implying an international franchise.

Errant Signal - DOOM

ChaosEngine says...

All of the comments he makes are totally valid, and no, I don't think this could be the foundation for a new franchise.

OTOH, I totally didn't care about any of that, because I was having such a blast.

STAR TREK BEYOND Official Trailer #2 (2016)

TheFreak says...

The problem with JJ Abram's Star Trek is that he destroyed the core of Roddenberry's vision. Star Trek IS the optimistic, utopian future of mankind.

The popularity of themes comes and goes with the hopes and fears of the current culture. But if zombies are in and vampires are out at the moment, you don't try to make a vampire movie where vampires act like zombies. Just make a fucking zombie movie!

So maybe Roddenberry's core theme is not popular at the moment. If audiences want to see a future of betrayal, violence and individualist motivations in their plot, then pick a franchise that represents those themes and have at it. Remake "Forbidden Planet" any way you like. Shit, do "Logan's Run" in space with a shit ton of CGI.

Or get out ahead of the curve. Old testament angels in an anachronistic setting is just WAITING for a good director to come along.

STAR TREK BEYOND Official Trailer #2 (2016)

@artician @LiquidDrift

You all are forgetting about Star Trek V, The Search for God. That movie single-handedly almost destroyed the entire franchise.

You could film two hours of William Shatner singing to Chris Pine about why he was the best Kirk and it wouldn't be worse than Star Trek V.

RetroAhoy: Quake

shagen454 says...

Yeah, I remember Quakeworld... I also remember Mplayer, Kali, Gamespy, TEN (Total Entertainment Network which was my favorite back then). Dial in and join chatrooms for Duke Nukem/Quake (1&2) matches and such... I'm not sure what happened with that, it almost seemed like it was a little too ahead of it's time (subscription fee and all). They also had a pretty cool exclusive MMO @ 1997/1998 called Dark Sun Online based on the AD&D franchise.

Hilarious to think that services like TEN & Mplayer seized to exist because of the example that Blizzard (one of my favorite developers) set with Battlenet being intrinsically a part of the game. It's a lot more convenient but I do miss those broad services & community that came with it. And now with all of this online only as basically an anti-piracy measure... every company has some sort of shite program that you have to download and log into. It sucks comparatively!!

Remember, QuakeWorld? I remember id Software made this client to make the game much better online for dial-upers like me who had crappy GTE phone services (e.g., 21600-26400 connections on faster modems!).

Assassin's Creed Trailer

FlowersInHisHair says...

Alien: Isolation is probably the finest game ever to come from a movie franchise. It's one of the best games ever, imho.

Mordhaus said:

As far as games based on movie franchises, I would say mainly only Star Wars and LotR games have been really successful, although an argument could be made for the Lego games (Harry Potter, Batman, etc). There are some others that have been decent, but nothing spectacular I can recall off the top of my head.

Price of Persia made a large profit, but would you say it was a good movie? RE movies have done well, but I would say you would find most critics panned them badly. They certainly were not really related to the early RE games, other than biomod creatures and zombies. I wouldn't put the RE movies in the exact same category as Street Fighter, they aren't THAT bad.

I would also say that Milla had somewhat of a fanbase simply from the Fifth Element, Dazed and Confused, Zoolander, and The Messenger. I wouldn't say huge, but I was a fan of hers and I suffered through the first couple of RE movies simply because she was the female lead.

As far as the worst conversion from game to movie, I would say it's a 3-way tie between Doom, Wing Commander, and Street Fighter.

I find it interesting that you allude to Resident Evil, but put it in the same category as Street Fighter. I find the RE movies WAY better than the games, and they've certainly made money. Milla didn't have much of a fanbase when that series started...at least not as an actress.
Now movie games, games made from popular movie stories as tie in merchandise, nearly ALL suck....but I'm sure there's an exception to that rule as well.

They F*ck You at the Drive-Thru!

newtboy says...

Assuming he's not just lying about his dad being the owner, which is more than possible....
I wonder what kind of beating and berating he got after his pops saw this video. I bet dad knows what social media can do to a business...it can get a franchise taken away for one, it can start protests that bankrupt it for another.
I'm not saying either would be appropriate in this case, but it can and has happened for less.
I'm guessing that there was a long talk about respect before he was fired, and another about it being HIS fortune right there, likely ending with something along the lines of 'and now it will never be yours'.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Trailer (Apr 2016)

artician says...

My love affair begins and ends with the books, and I have a very low tolerance for franchises, but that they made this a period-piece excites more than these little, typed characters can describe. For anyone expanding on existing worlds, this is exactly how you do it!
