CNN: Guns In Japan

Engels says...

I think we could draw from this. How about all US citizens that want to purchase a gun have to take a comprehensive exam that test knowledge not just of the 2nd amendment, but also the entire constitution, branches of government, federalist vs anti-federalist arguments, all supreme court cases directly involving challenges to the 2nd amendment, etc. Throw in a federally mandated mental health check from an accredited shrink and voila, guns are taken from the hands of those fighting erectile disfunction and put in the hands of those that actually care about the nation.

PS: don't go off on a tangent about how then only the bad guys will have guns and then we'll all get murdered like, all the time. That's a bs argument and you know it.

What happens when you're drunk AND stoned at the same time?

Engels says...

Eh its all about moderation. Having a bit of scotch with your ganja toke isn't going to be harmful, and can be quite pleasant. Overdoing weed or alcohol, nevermind both, leads to bad and potentially dangerous experience. Enough with either/or puritanism.

Portia Spiders Are Capable of Learning and Problem Solving

Engels says...

I agree. Genius may be overstating things. That said, knowing that you have to drop in on the prey in their blind spot is something I'd think wolves or cats would do, but wee little spiders? That's adorable and scary!

Samantha Bee - What the Hell Are Superdelegates?

Engels says...

I wish I had her faith in the delegates switching their vote, but when 70% of votes go to Bernie (Washington state) yet NONE of the state's super delegates (all elected officials mind you) cast for Bernie, you have to wonder if they really are a safeguard against despotism or simply a means of protecting a party's status quo.

How to Land a 737 (Nervous Passenger)

Engels says...

Everything seemed doable to me except for the very last bit with the touchdown. Then he races through a whole mess of lever pulls that are unclear in this video yet are absolutely the most important part of not dying. Whoever did this was just showing off and not serious about preventing a crash.

Smoking vs Vaping

Engels says...

If you are a Seattle resident, and I know some of you are, I recommend visiting Future Vapor in Capitol Hill. The owners are all about reaching that 0% nicotine level, and will hook you up with what equipment you need for the budget you can afford. I can't praise these guys highly enough.

If you are not in the area, you can get a decent starter kit and a popular e-juice from mtbakervapor. They are a reliable and relatively inexpensive ecommerce outlet.

That said, if you don't smoke period, don't start vaping. Don't be a tool. Life is hard enough as it is without giving yourself one more fiddly-assed thing to worry about.

Sam Harris: Can Psychedelics Help You Expand Your Mind?

Engels says...

I know you're a big ole troll, shiny, about as christian as my left shoe, but to indulge you for a moment, those two quotes in particular, if you are an -actual- Christian who believes that Jesus -was- in fact God, then you know that the passage from John has no particularly stronger meaning than being with the deity is important to your life's salvation. That's nothing particularly unique to Christianity.

With regards to that other out of context Luke quote, who the heck knows what you mean by quoting it, other than Jesus wanted you to feel bad for doing bad things. Not exactly exclusivist. Pretty sure that thought has been around since the first inkling of empathy happened in the great apes..

Sam Harris: Can Psychedelics Help You Expand Your Mind?

Engels says...

Ya, sorry, never subscribe to the 'super secret club' version of Christianity. One can interpret the scriptures in a multitude of ways, and one can always cherry pick passages to reinforce an exclusivist view, one that I've chosen to interpret quite differently than the usual 'no heatens allowed' doctrines.

Sam Harris: Can Psychedelics Help You Expand Your Mind?

Engels says...

I really liked how he handled this. He sees psychedelics as a tool to reach what's already natively there, albeit hard to reach with our modern thought processes.

I also like his assertion that we all have the potential to be like Jesus, or another religious figure that taught the oneness of man.
