Last I shopped around (several years ago) GoDaddy had the best deals for both hosting and domains. They have good webmaster tools, essentially 100% uptime, and their basic account comes with gobs more storage and bandwidth than I could ever use.
Don't forget to post the links here when you go live with your new sites!
So far I settled on NameCheap for domain registration and Dreamhost for hosting.
Thanks for the reply. I looked at GoDaddy and didn't really like the deals there though.
If we may ask, what are your plans? Starting up a talking points think tank? You'd do well with that.
dreamhost... er... no.
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
I recommend our hosting company http://www.johncompanies.com/ for medium to large scale stuff.
I don't have much more advice - but I love picking domain names - that would be my dream job - just sitting around and putting words together.
The thing with domains is that all the good names are gone - so you've got your nonsense words and your word combinations. VideoSift being an example of the latter. In general the shorter the two words that you're putting together, the better. I was pretty happy to grab ScrapeUp. Also, if you are looking for a tool to help with domain choosing, http://www.domainsbot.com is fantastic.
I've been with SurpassHosting.com for over 2 years.
@ $6/mo for unlimited databases - and they use Cpanel and Fantastico (if you don't know what that is - once you use it, you'll love it and find it necessary). They have a bug in their system where every month they threaten to suspend me because they didn't get my payment, and we exchange impolite emails and they figure out how to bill my credit card and it's all find till the next month. I see it as a therapeutic way to get my $6 worth out of them. But they have excellent value.
I also use 1and1.com for a bit more expensive service. I'm locked in - don't want to re-install everything on another server. Haven't had much problem from them for the 4+ years I've been with them, since my month-long tiff with them 3 years ago trying to have them allow me use a damn .hk domain, those bastards.
That's all.
I'm very happy with BlueHost.
Thanks for all the info!
I also use 1and1.com. They were cheaper than godaddy, and I haven't had a problem with them yet.

I dunno if you need proof of a business for it, but http://www.netfirms.com has $6/year for a domain name.
