Women as Rewards - Tropes regarding women in video games

enochsays...

i tried..i really really tried,but i realized around the 14 minute mark that i really didn't care.

if this is the cross this woman wishes to bear and bring light to the masses regarding this horrid, society crushing trope, have at it miss outrage.

speaking only for myself i do not find this a serious enough issue to really waste my time on.

maybe if she had a video of a hot chick taking off her clothes i would watch the whole video.

ChaosEnginesaid:

So I wonder if the people who down-voted this actually watched it?

I don't get why people think it's a "cross to bear" or even that she thinks it's a "horrid, society crushing trope".

It's an artistic critique of a common aspect of video games. She's not saying the world will end if we don't fix this, it's more like "hey, look at this thing. Isn't this kinda fucked up?"

I think it's fascinating to see the history here; at this point some of these games seem to carry on tropes like a kind of tradition (RE,MGS,etc.).

But as I get older, it becomes pretty apparent how embarrassingly juvenile these are. And having worked in the gaming industry, it's depressing that grown men and women commit this into a game without really thinking about it.

Fortunately, I worked at a more progressive studio that was very aware of these kinds of decisions; so there is definitely an evolution happening (albeit slowly).

Juvenile market will be catered to by juvenile products. The video definitely dragged on. I think a lot of this gets traced back to the industry for a long time being nearly entirely male, and the market very nearly the same. And young. And escapist. The market has changed, and to some extent the game makers, but there's a long way still to go. It's a reflection of society more than a separately addressable problem though, imo.

You're right about the industry. It's still largely made up of young males.

However, you're completely wrong about the market. It's not the 80s anymore, the average gamer is in their 30s, has a house, a job, a spouse, etc. An increasing number have kids and a significant percentage are women.

Unfortunately, there is a very vocal minority of young, stupid (mostly) males who believe the world revolves around them and the second a game is made that doesn't exclusively pander to their whims, they lost their tiny minds.
