Teacher Goes Off On Student For Using N-Word In Class

Sorry for the downvote, acidSpine, but I hate it when people write off kids. I've done enough work in education to know the huge impact one good teacher can have on a kid's life. I've seen kids who were headed for serious trouble (gangs, substance abuse, etc.) have their lives completely turned around by a single inspiring teacher. Writing someone off is one of the worst things you can do to a person, especially if that person is a child. I have no idea what kind of impact this teacher will have on his student over the year. Whatever it may be, it's infinitely better than doing nothing.

A teacher's place is not to inspire anger in kids but to invoke creative and critical thought.
By debasing this student, both directly and publicly, he is only building more walls in the kids brain and causing him to close down even more. This is shown by the way the kid closes off and reverts to finding it all a joke.

I don't know what ever lead up to this debacle of events, as it is not shown, but the teacher should have found a more creative way to educate and inspire this student to evolve his thinking and maybe to give a dam!

I remember being in elementary school. Kind of naive and a bit of a smart-ass, I'm sure. I remember being outside at lunch and joking around with friends about the word "cum". There was one teacher that overheard and called me over. I was sure I was in for it for saying "bad words". He asked me about the word and, after I asked, explained in clinical but direct terms exactly what is was, what it was for and so on. He gave me an education instead of sending me on a time-out for inappropriate language and so on.

I was shocked and surprised, not at the outcome of the word, but at the way the teacher dealt with the situation. Right away, the word was no longer "funny" to me because it no longer was an off-limits word, just another word into my vocabulary and I knew in which context to use it.

I'll always remember the teacher that took the time for me... and I'm better off for it...

I don't believe he's doing a very good job of reaching these kids. They're loosing respect for him moment by moment in this video, and the kid he's trying to reach is shutting down because the teacher is terribly offensive.

This is essentially what I saw from this teacher:

Do not shame the student. Don't. Do. It. It's not a good educational tool. If you want him/her to go deeper into his/her shell, then by all means. But, if you're intention is to actually "help" them, don't do it. Don't.

Exactly what I was thinking. You can't perpetrate that sort of a freak-out on someone and expect them to listen to your points or have any respect for you at the end. The teacher may have been well intentioned, but well intentioned verbal abuse is about as sympathetic as a well intentioned beating.

What a bunch of hippy bullshit. This kind of thinking is what leads us to today's world people. All hail the new god - he travels under the guise of well-meaning. When a parent is pinned for shouting at or delivering moderate physical punishment to their child, he smiles, and another child grows up believing that they are right in all things and must regret nothing - because there are no real consequences.

When a man is jailed and sued for defending himself, his family and his home from intruders, he laughs, and another generation set out on their career choice of 'criminal' - because apparently crime does pay.

And when we tie our teachers hands so that they cannot shout at a child or give them a lengthy detention without a week's notice, when we prevent them from getting the respect (mixed with a degree of fear) from students, then we end up with apathetic under-achievers.

This man has passion and god love him for it. By rediculing this kid for idolising a bunch of fucking losers and law breakers, he might have just turned this kid into something worthy of society.

I've seen the effect that the kind of teachers you hope for has on a school. You've no idea what you're talking about. If you think that this teacher's vehemence and words were not inspiring, you're more scummy than the kid that got the ear-bashing.

A thousand upvotes for dystopian's comments. Preach it brother.

Well, interesting point of view - for sure..., I believe in passion, but there is a proper way to use it. I'm also all for scolding a kid when he needs it. I agree today's youth are lost as to respect and have general authority issues.., and so on..., and all that...

I also feel this teacher went goes too far in the wrong direction. I don't know, maybe he slows down and comes back around at some point (not in the video), I just don't think it's a teacher's place to do what he did. Of course, I don't know the kid, I don't know his family, I don't know the relationship the teacher has with the student and so on, and quite frankly, neither does anyone here. I'm sure there are many shades of gray here but I's still rather see the teacher take the high ground here...
