Ricky Gervais' Extremely Uncomfortable Golden Globes Monolog

So, in the span of four minutes, Gervais managed to make an enemy of Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Cher, the entire cast and crew of Sex and the City 2, the Church of Scientology, Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Hugh Hefner, and Hugh Hefner's fiancée.

I didn't find it funny and thought it was boring. Were there anything else good/funny in last night's GG? I have it recorded and only watched that boring monolog. Also, these award shows are way too long.

Just been reading that half way through the ceremony, Gervais disappeared for an hour, leading to rumours he was getting a big telling off backstage. When he came back, he was more subdued from what the report was saying.

The golden globes was actually fun to watch last night because of Gervais. The guy is known for pushing the envelope. I mean some of his jokes in his last special on HBO were 'really' bad, but funny as hell. Last night he was great. Some of these people have ego's that filled that room and most of them need to have their ego's deflated a bit and Gervais was the perfect man to do that.

I've seen on TV all day some really bad 'reviews' about how he made enemies of these actors and how scathing and hateful he was. All of that is bullshit. It was satire, plain and simple. Funny ass satire. If these 'actors' don't understand that it was all in good fun, then they just show us all what kind of people they truly are.

Gervais certainly won't be back next year. He went to far in the eyes of these actors. But I'm glad he did and I knew he would. He always pushes that envelope until he can get as raunchy as he wants, and he is absolutely the master at that art.

Yogisays...

Isn't it sad these peoples egos won't allow Gervais to be back. The medias feigned outrage in coddeling these fuckers is sad. I thought a lot of people were laughing...apparently the ones in charge weren't...which is kinda what comedy is about!

Golden Globes exec: Ricky Gervais "crossed the line" - "But That's Ricky!"
Interview by: Bryan Alexander

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Add Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk to the chorus of those who believe that Ricky Gervais went too far as host of the Golden Globes on Sunday night.

The head of the group responsible for the awards show says that while he felt the show itself was "terrific," he too felt that Gervais' jokes about specific celebrities were too much.

"He definitely crossed the line," Berk told The Hollywood Reporter. "And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky."

"Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones," he added.

Robert Downey Jr. - the butt of one of Gervais' jokes - said the show was "hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones."

Gervais went after Berk personally with this joke when introducing him saying, "I just had to help him off the toilet and pop his teeth in."

While Berk traditionally vets every word of the Globes' script, he says that Gervais does not allow that pre-show scrutiny as host. "That's not how Ricky works," he said.

"I had absolutely no idea what Ricky was going to say so anything I heard was at the same time you heard it," Berk said. "When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected."

As for widespread rumors that Gervais was lectured during the show or kept from reappearing at key moments, Berk dismissed them as "ridiculous."

"It was always planned that in the section of important awards he was not going to be part of (the show)," says Berk. "He was never called on the carpet, or given a warning or anything else."

Berk would not comment whether he would recommend to the membership to have Gervais back next year as host.

I found Ricky to be very funny, witty, topical and on the ball.

I don't know where the negative reports are coming from, they are all over the internet but all I can see is headline-hungry columnists who are jumping on the bandwagon in a smear-campaign.

Yes, Ricky Roasted a bunch of Stars, most of which I saw laughing as he joked.
The example I posted above enforces my point. The column tries to come off as if Philip Berk is upset at the performance but in fact, Phillip seems (to me) to be defending the performance, at least a little bit.

The columnist even leaves a few words out of the quote to make it sound negative, which in fact it wasn't.

I'm not saying someone couldn't be offended, I'm just saying (so far) I haven't found any actual (complete) quotes from the actors themselves condemning Ricky for his sense, or lack of humor.

"Grain of Salt" when the tabloids get involved, I suppose!

• Alec Baldwin was seen wiping a tear from his eye as he laughed along from the audience.

• Rapper and actor Sean 'Diddy' Combs, said he was 'really enjoying it' and said Gervais was 'doing an excellent job'.

• Bruce Willis - backstage he admitted: 'He was fantastic, he killed it, he did great.'

• Rising British actor Andrew Garfield admitted it had been a cringe-worthy performance: 'He's been terribly nasty and horribly rude and I think he's genius.'

• Fellow Brit Christian Bale said he didn’t feel Gervais pushed the envelope enough and added: 'Thank God for comedians, they have the most important job. I hope he keeps going further!'

• De Niro was also seen dissolving into laughter but he too had made his own little jibes about the event as he collected the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.

These will be the ONLY bits of the awards that I will watch as the shows themselves are boring as shit.

It's all mock outrage, the organisers will be leaping for joy as to how much publicity he has created for this, ALL ACCORDING TO PLAN.

Dicks who think this is offensive, dicks indeed.

Ricky Gervais is just great. I only wish he could have brought Carl Pilkington with him.

It's Karl with a K, he's the K-man, Mr. K Dilkington. You know the drill!

imo gervais was absolutely fucking blisteringly good. The tim allen one was probably my fave. Robert downey junior's gone down in my estimation after being unable to take that. I almost feel like it's high school and some people simply cannot take a decent look at themselves and laugh, they usually do that during college, i guess half of these fuckers never got that far.

If he's back for another year, i'm hereby declaring that "hollywood" deserves everyone's appreciation and respect. I mean, they're an entertainment industry.

Are you not entertained?

Shepppardsays...

I actually don't really agree with what Ricky did, personally.

Let me explain, before you all bust out the torches and pitchforks.

Basically, the globes is a celebration of what the Actors themselves did, Granted, it's not generally a high-esteemed field, but a lot of actors are still very good at what they do, and the globes are celebrating that.

While I don't think Ricky's jokes were terribly offensive, he still treated the entire gig as a sort of Roast, except the people he mocked didn't volunteer themselves, they just showed up. And one thing I don't see from all the videos popping up, is Gervais saying "Nah, I'm just kidding, you know I love you" as many Roasts do.

I just don't think that this was the time or place for the jokes he told.

dannym3141says...

@Shepppard - they invited him the FIRST year knowing what he would do.

Even if they plead innocence in hiring him the first year - which surely you must agree they can't - don't you think they had some idea what he would do second time around?

Like i said before, these guys are in the entertainment industry, surely they want to enrich worldwide entertainment? He entertained us! Better than the fucking tourist did, too.

1. Hollywood (actors, directors, writers, et al) regularly tear a new one into targets that "didn't ask for it". The question isn't whether the person being satarized 'asked for it' or not. The question is whether they DESERVE it or not. And in this case, Ricky's satire was 100% on target and more than overdue.

2. 'Crossing the line' is entirely in the eye of the beholder. Ricky did NOTHING in this ceremony that the people in the audience haven't done 100X over to other people, industries, or whatever. Actors take low blows, cheap shots, and pure snide meanness as part-and-parcel of these award shows. They pontificate about this or that pet peeve, insult this or that person, or otherwise use interviews, ceremonies, and public events to vent. If you can't take it, then don't dish it out.

3. This whole attitude Hollywood is showing of, "Harumph! Why I never heard of such a thing! Harumph what a canard...!" is doing nothing except prove that Ricky was right to do what he did. Quite frankly, this reaction is showing that someone needs to do this at every Golden Globe ceremony, the Oscars, and EVERY single one of the 10,000 other ceremonies and award shows that actors throw for themselves every year.

Yeesh. You're ACTORS. You aren't that important. You're just people who can hit marks. Don't be so full of yourselves. You aren't special, or intelligent, or funny, or superior. In many cases you're a bunch of spoiled, selfish, drunken, drug-addled, adulterous, obnoxious, hypocritical jerks. Some of you are lucky you don't get egged when you show your face in public, so quit copping this "how dare he" attitude.

lavollsays...

the most uncomfortable thing to watch is the video of stoned/drunk actors being interviewed and trying to say something deep and profound about "gervais the comedian"

bareboards2says...

It's not the jokes. It's the delivery.

I mean, look at the thumbnail.

I love Ricky Gervais. I also think something went wrong on this particular night, and it had to do with Ricky personally, not the jokes.

viewer_999says...

I fail to see what's so "extremely uncomfortable" about this, or why everyone is making such a big deal about it. The academy (or whatever) hired an edgy comedian. What did they expect? They got exactly what they wanted, which was controversy and attention, because their medium is dying and no one really cares about their show.

If the delicate genii talentless hacks in the audience cannot handle it, they should stay home where their pretty faces and fortunate timing gave them such cushy lives. That said, it's pretty obvious to me that the majority of attendees enjoyed the hosting and the more comedically inclined among them were actually sparring with Gervais on stage (e.g. Downey). Newsflash: That's what comedians do. Nevertheless, the papers go and spin Downey's comment out of context, making him sound furious with Gervais... so they can get their slice of the attention pie, too. It's all a drummed-up drama fest to get viewers to a format which no one cares about anymore.

Gervais did a brilliant job so they got exactly what they asked for.

viewer_999says...

In fact, go and watch the sifted video of Downey's moment where he responds to Gervais if you haven't seen it already. He gets much more crude, going so far as to list the women in the audience he'd like to sleep with... on stage... at the same time... in front of his wife. Hello, Gervais won't be back?

The more I see of this "controversy" the more I realize there is no controversy at all, except the fake one drummed up by the media to get their (much needed) slice of the attention pie. The people have a voice now, and the media becomes less and less relevant, so they need to shock to get attention.

Anyone feeding into this being controversial in any way whatsoever -- via web2.0 or not -- is simply playing the media's puppet.
