Repeated use of "the Wilhelm scream" over the years in movies

swampgirlsays...

I'd never heard it named before. I noticed after the Lord of the Rings trilogy hearing the same scream used. I think it was in all three or maybe just the last two. It wasn't until then when I started noticing the scream in other movies.

Great post

It makes me think of something else... In many french-speaking gags, when someone throws up, it's the same puke sound that a French group of comics used in the early 90's...

There's another scream that's used all the time in movies, video games, commercials, etc. It sounds kind of like "yyyyeeeAAAAGGHHHH" and it's often used when showing someone falling or jumping off of something very high. Don't know what the origin of it is.

There's a creaking door sound effect that shows up everywhere like this. It drives me absolutely mad. I've heard it recently in films (Brother), TV (Robin Hood, The Crystal Maze) and computer games (Daggerfall), and a dozen other places that I can't remember. I may have to start writing letters to the foley people on these things.

Re: Doom, the opening door (originally from Doom, not the sequel), the former human death, and also the imp "alert" sound gets used a lot, the latter for a host of random monsters from random films/TV episodes.

The yeeeEAAAAAAGH (or the one I think you mean) came from Aliens afaik; scene where Drake gets sprayed with acid. I've definitely heard that in other movies since, and I think Aliens is the origin just because it fits in with Drake's voice, and the shot is a closeup up his face as he's screaming, which seems bolder than any of the Wilhelm scream usages or their equivalents for that scream.

Ugh. I guess I'll be the only dissenting view here. As a certified movie nut, I can't stand the Wilhelm scream. Because it is in everything. But, I also watch more movies than the average person, so I would notice it more often. As you know, familiarity breeds contempt.

There's also a female "Wilhelm" that is very overdone as well. I first heard it years ago on a sound-effects-for-video-production CD (which I still have somewhere) and I've heard it used in at least 25-35 separate movies/tv shows/video games/etc. But nowhere near as bad as the Wilhelm, as evidenced by the above clip.

Oh well.

there's a child's laugh that is used in everything and drives me nuts. Don't know the origin, just know the cartoon I first heard it in, so I now notice it every time I hear it. I hear it in movies, shows, commercials.

Aagh. Having an ear for repeated sound effects, they all drive me nuts. But Wilhelm is allowed. If not excessive.

Wasn't the original title of the clip 'man being eaten by an alligator?' Hey, temple of doom.
