Porsche Cayman S driver fail

YouTube description:

Just cause you have a nice car doesn't make you a good driver. Don't let your son drive your Porsche!

It wouldn't explain why he didn't simply hit the clutch and take it out of gear, would it?
He did drive the wheels off it. That's normally only said when you drive well!

CrushBugsaid:

Well, if it was a stuck throttle, that would explain it.

Sure, but panic makes people do dumb things. I would guess that I would sit there stomping on the gas trying to get it to unstick, because I just wouldn't believe it was happening. I am not willing to internet-judge someone over 44 seconds of video.

True enough. I think we've all been there, being stupid because we panicked.
I wasn't judging anything but the driving skill there, a skill that was found to be lacking in this one instance. ;-)

I just remember thinking, back when there was the sticking throttle on Toyota's (I think), "Why don't they just take it out of gear or turn it off?". I realized that turning it off might lock the steering, but changing gears should work. One day when driving my 79 Lemans (my first car) my brakes failed completely, I threw the car into park and got it stopped safely, so it can work at least sometimes.

Aren't most sports cars these days flappy paddles (i.e. no clutch)?

Oh...I hadn't thought of that. Maybe so.
I drive a 45 year old Bronco, no flappy paddles there, so it didn't cross my mind.
One more reason to stick with old school tech! ;-)

Yes, but that (up to and including a completely blown engine) is generally seen as preferable to careening at high speed into a large object like a tree, overpass, or another car. And/or the near misses, scrape damage, and missing wheel seen here.

LiquidDriftsaid:

If the throttle is stuck, wouldn't putting it into neutral immediately redline the engine?

Stick or Porsche PDK, there is no brake lights after taking off from the light. As he floats it sideways there is no light up of his taillights, or brake light bar in the rear window.

He only taps his brakes going OVER the median, not before (0:16)

After he gets back in his own lane, and tries to drive away the embarrassment with more throttle (no brake lights through this bit either). The partially broken spindle became fully snapped.

I agree. He totally seemed to just keep trying to play it off like he wasn't out of control until he no longer had any ability to refute it.

Nah, that definitely looks like a throttle stick. Plants the foot at the lights and it stays planted. He smashes over the island and then continues to try and rev it out? I don't think so. Even after he loses the tire (0.29), the car continues to try and accelerate even though he has the brakes on hard (the smoke from the right back tire wasn't from spinning on the pavement, looked like the brake burning off).

And who thought this thing was a freaking 944 (which is still my favourite Porsche)?
