PEPCON Rocket Fuel Plant Explodes

burhansays...

I never would've imagined that a marshmallow factory would be located in such close proximity to a rocket fuel plant. Who doesn't like to look at video of shockwaves?

phelixiansays...

Damn that was sweet. The shockwaves were amazing. Too bad there wasn't a graham cracker factory on one side and a chocolate factory the other.... mmmm S'Mores... ok actually I don't like S'Mores but when the dude said marshmallow factory... with all those flames.

theo47says...

And if after watching that, you DON'T think corporations can regulate themselves, well - you're just a godless Communist socialist hippie libtard moonbat!

czechritesays...

if you look in the background, you can also see the shockwave run over and demolish the marshmellow plant....

Were any Umpa-lumpas hurt or killed in this tragedy?

slybrisays...

Funny how you can hear the explosion instantly in that video. The camera guys were pretty far away and it would have taken a few seconds for the sound to hit them. I guess they re-synched it for TV.
Marshmallow plant? WTF?

"Funny how you can hear the explosion instantly in that video."
Yeah, that bugs me, too. Bothers me in all of those old WWII naval videos in the same way, but I guess viewers can't be trusted to "understand" that something exploded if they can't hear it go boom.
I've always been kind of torn on whether or not resynching is a good thing or a bad thing. It's just so...unnatural.

Excuse me, but could you please explain Theo47?

You lost me on how corporate self-regulation applies to what is clearly an industrial accident. Are you implying that outside regulation would create a perfect world where highly flamable substances will never go up in flames in tragic and unintended settings?

Yea, that was a bit snarky of me, but I really would like to hear your point.

pass.the.grog.says...

I lived in Vegas at the time, and still remember the boom ... it was pretty big news when that happened. At least the marshmallow factory opened back up (Kids marshmallows if i remember correctly.) actually looking back on that place, it was kind of a trip... They manufactured... marshmallows...

woah.

in any case, cool video.

Devlinsays...

Amazingly enough (if memory serves) only one person died in the entire affair, and he chose to stay behind due to being handicapped so he wouldn't slow others down. Older guy. THAT is taking one for the team. I hope his family was well compensated for his sacrifice.

obscenesimiansays...

I saw that whole thing from Radar Mountain in BC NV. It happened Just before Lunch when I was in high school. So we drove up to the Radar dish on the Mountain outside of town and watched the fire for a little while. Remarkably little death and Mayhem for such a big explosion.

Were that to happen today, thousands would die. The rocket fuel plant is somewhere in Southern Utah now. I hope it is near Colorado City.
