One of my favorite Biblical passages, Exodus 32:26-28:

32:26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

32:27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

32:28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

That's right, God told the Levites to kill family members, friends, and neighbors. And by God they did it, thoroughly. 3000 murders, all at the behest of a bipolar deity.

Still, I can understand why God is a mass-murdering son of a bitch. We made him in our own image.

Yes, couldn't have said it better. You hit the subtext right on the head, imo.
That is the sad irony at the heart of this "trial". As Adorno said, it was in fact the mythic history of the Jewish people AS god's chosen people that gave the nazis their (subconscious) fodder. And sadly, it was all just a myth anyway.

This is the same thing that led to my break with religion.

If you take a small child and tell it "Do not touch this thing, it will hurt you" and then leave them unsupervised, chances are they will touch it. A responsible parent does not leave a child, who doesn't really understand the consequences of their actions, alone. And when they do hurt themselves, due to our negligence, do we then punish them further or do we take care of them? As they grow up, do we instruct them to attack other children, to take whatever they want because we say they should? Or do we teach them to be kind, forgiving, friendly etc?

If you treated your children the way god treated his, your children would be taken away from you. We do not starve our children, or submit them to slavery, abuse, terror just so they'll obey us. We do not murder other children to advance our own. We look down on these things as reprehensible.

In terms of goodness, the average human parent is more responsible, kind and caring than the god of the old testament. If he exists, then I want no part of his 'reward'.

Great sift, would upvote multiple times if I could.
