Neil deGrasse Tyson debunks 2012 at 2010 World Science Fest

From YouTube: Here Neil Degrasse Tyson talks of the Mayan 2012 planetary predictions. He talks about how the alignment of the Sun Earth and center of the galaxy is NOT a unique phenomenon. In fact, this alignment happens each and every year. So why is 2012 any different? He also explains many other non-scientific Mayan perceptions of cosmology. Including the observation that the Mayans thought the Earth was flat, had four corners, and was held up in space on the back of a crocodile and five trees of various bright colors. Which is in and of itself intriguing and culturally important but factually NOT TRUE.

To this day, I consider him my favorite astro-physicist. Every time you hear him talk, he has this passion in his voice that you rarely hear from other scientists. He truly loves his job. On a different note, I'd love to see the rest of his talk, if it's posted anywhere else..

By the apparently informal nature of this gathering, he may well have imbibed an alcoholic beverage or two ahead of time. Not that he sounds inebriated in any way, but then maybe he can hold his liquor.

Hey bartender, I'll have what the astrophysicist is drinking.>> ^SlipperyPete:

In the thumbnail, it looks like he's lickin' a shot for science.
So, business as usual.

The 2012 phenomenon is pretty funny with the dozens of theories and the 400 History Channel specials.
I don't believe there is some end of the world thing coming. I do, however, just feel that we're building up to something. Economy, Politics, Religion, Population, Energy, Environment and the list goes on; all of it appears to be getting more and more fucked with no signs of the fucked'ness slowing down.

There are so many things today that seem to be on the verge of exploding or imploding into something; things that 10-15 years ago didn't. Maybe it's only because media coverage is so much higher now then back then, and the majority of what the media wants to cover and throw in your face is everything that's wrong in the world.

every generation before us has felt this way
every generation after us will feel this way
when I was a kid, the ATeam TV show KICKED @$$, watching it now? not so much
everything was always better before, and the future always looks bleak
we gloss over the past, and hate the fact that the future isn't ours to inherit, but other's
