The best way to get ketchup out of a bottle isn't to hit the top or use a butter knife, it's to cup your hand at an angle where the bottle comes to it's tip and bring the bottle down on your hand with a bit of force. That way the bottle stops abruptly and forces the ketchup out.

You wouldn't believe how much better it works then slapping the top of a ketchup bottle.
