GoT: Red Wedding Reactions Compilation

Various Game of Thrones fans react to the surprising death of some major characters.

I have been waiting for this scene for ages, and it was the most disappointing thing I've seen in the show so far. Campy as fuck, and shit directing. I don't think I'll watch much anymore.

Edit: Well, after watching the whole thing, I'm glad it at least had the desired effect on the folks who didn't know it was coming. Also funny how you can tell who read the books.

I hope they do the wolfs head Robb for further effect of hating the Freys. But yea my twitter and facebook feeds were alive with people who didnt know about this scene, oh man pure joy.

ChaosEnginesays...

I actually thought it was really well done. It was always going to be a hard scene to film, but I thought they approached it quite cleverly. There were even a few little light-hearted moments (such as Walder Freys glance at Robb when Roslyn is revealed), that seemed to be put in deliberately to throw you off.

Everything up to that last minute or two I thought was good as well. I was really hoping (and therein lies my mistake ) that they would make the entire combination of scenes in that time-space a montage to Rains of Castamere. In the book, everything happened all at once, and it was so dramatic.
In the show, I felt the directing was amateurish and terrible for the most part, especially the last minute or two. It was totally 4th-wall breaking, and just awkward, and just...
*spoilers*
When that last guard comes out to slit Cats neck, after way too many moments of her staring into space, it was like one of the extras said "oh shit! I'm on!" I didn't feel nearly as much remorse for the mother in her, and the silence for her and Robs deaths was just awkward and amateur.
I do agree with the points you made though. I loved that sly smile that Frey gives Rob at the actual wedding. Very good presentation with that, and I could appreciate it for what it was (intending to set that "all is well and happy!" tone for the audience).

Probably the main reason I'm upset is because I just finished the 5th book, and really, the Red Wedding is the last scene that really shook me, and felt extremely well-written. After this, I don't have much reason to watch the show anymore.

A "Rains of Castamere" montage would have been excellent, but I actually really liked Catelyns death. There was this sense of just numbness from her, that she's been through so much she can't even function any more.

But yeah, the red wedding was definitely one of the high points in the story. Martin really needs to get the story moving again in the next book.

I don't recall there ever being this clear separation between the "I read the books" group and everyone else. for any other TV/movie adaptation of a book.

Gotta admit, it's starting to irk me a bit. And yes, I'm admittedly in the non-book reading group.

MilkmanDansays...

As a book reader, I've been looking forward to this -- and by this I particularly mean seeing the reactions of people who haven't read the books to this scene. So, this was fun.

As for the scene itself, not too surprisingly I liked the book version better, but I thought the show version was not bad and rather better than it could have been.

...Without giving anything away, lets just say that I'm also looking forward to what is coming next also. Even more than I was looking forward to this one.

shuacsays...

Just like Ramsay Bolton said to Theon in an earlier episode this season, "If you think this story has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention."

The rule of thumb is, "Don't get too attached to anyone in this series." I had an evil Cheshire smile when sitting down with everyone to watch this one.

And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low..

EvilDeathBeesays...

I agree with @artician. I thought that last scene was so poorly executed and directed. Rather than bringing it to life on screen, it felt like people just read their lines, and did their actions in front of a camera that just happened to be there. It's like they were just banking on the shock value for people that didn't know what was coming. It was awful

I can say the same. I still enjoyed them, but I just wasn't into them as much. After book 4 I was ready for the series to end. It took 4+ books just for the promised "winter" to come. Starks clearly never met George Martin.

This series is a real exercise in the importance of keeping relate-able characters throughout a narrative. I'm still rooting for Arya (my favorite), and Bran (though his actor seems to be growing worse at portraying him). It's a pity the show turned Jon Snow into sexually-repressed Emo.

Drachen_Jagersaid:

This scene was where I started to lose interest in the books. I read farther, but my heart was never really in it again.

It's interesting that your traditional fantasy strongmen types (Robert Baratheon, Ned Stark, Robb Stark, Khal Drogo, Jamie Lannister) fare so poorly in this universe, while the outcasts (bastards, dwarves, tomboys, cripples and book readers) find a way to survive.

I only watched 5 seconds of the video, and didn't read any of the comments, because I fear that this is going to be a major spoiler for someone like me who has not started watching season 3...

Though if you don't want it spoiled then you're pretty much going to have to turn off the internet until you've watched it.

I can understand the people who are shocked and surprised; the people who gasp or mutter vulgarities; but the morons who start screaming, crying and/or running around the room shouldn't be allowed to watch TV.

I wouldn't say it was campy at all, but it did feel a little awkward and not grandiose enough. The delay before Cat's throat is slit was about twice as long as it needed to be.

Har! We prepared three pies for our GoT session on Monday, to properly celebrate the wedding. Good times.

Though through some evil magic, Michelle Fairley managed to conjure up some dried salt on my cheek.

braindonutsays...

Still haven't seen the episode, but when I read the book, I set it down after that scene and stared at a wall for a few minutes.

I could feel my heart rolling around in my stomach the whole time.

Paybacksays...

Thanks to the sift, I saw the part of the episode where the chick with the white hair got her army, freed them, and still got her army. That was cool.

Never read the books, never watched the show.

Saw this "red wedding" thing, was impressed at the CGI on the throat slashes. Didn't know any backstory... had no clue these were bad people getting their due, or the heroes getting fucked up.

I guess everything needs context.

gwiz665says...

I thought it was perfect. And was perfectly book ended by the silent running of the credits.

I read the chapter after watching the show and to me the show did it better.
