That was amazing. I recommend full-screen and HD mode. I have never seen the transcript of the off-radio conversation between the pilots. *quality.
siftbotsays...Boosting this quality contribution up in the Hot Listing - declared quality by dag.
SlipperyPetesays...quality *animation
siftbotsays...Adding video to channels (Animation) - requested by SlipperyPete.
ridesallyridencsays...Damn. Great video.
Croccydilesays...Serious fuckin props to the Captain. I would be horrified to be at the controls of a barely flying brick heading toward the water.
MaxWildersays...I am really surprised how impressive this video is. It's close enough to real, and of course we all know it's a true story, that it really brings home how fast and terrifying that must have been.
Another version with slightly different info is here: http://www.videosift.com/video/Flight-1549-Computer-Reconstruction-more-detail
MaxWildersays...Apparently some flocks are visible on the radar! I've never heard of this before, but the team that put together the computer reconstruction discuss it on their page: http://www.exosphere3d.com/pubwww/pages/project_gallery/cactus_1549_hudson_river.html
Information overload on that page!
zorsays...As I watch this I think about how the airlines use good economic times to bust pilot unions and recruit pilots with $15k per year, horrible hours, and so forth. Yeah I know sully made more than that but still, money matters and ought to go along with training, experience and performance. Stop treating pilots like pond scum and protect their unions at the federal level.
Lodurrsays...Looks like he lined up over the Hudson as a precaution while they did troubleshooting. I've read a lot of airplane crash accounts and there were cases where they should've considered the worst possible outcome right away rather than try to fix their problem and resume normal flight.
bareboards2says...Understatement of the year:
"Got any ideas?
Actually not."
That about sums it up.
StukaFoxsays...It woulda been different if I had been the pilot, because ATC would have been calling back, "Cactus 129, there's no airport called OH SHIT SHIT FUCK SHIT WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE PORKCHOP SANDWICHES SHIT FUCK SHIT FUCK THE PASSENGERS WHERE'S THE PARACHUTES. Did you mean Newark Int'l?"
Paybacksays...LOL at "We're gonna be in the Hudson." Like it's the pilot's lounge.
