EEVBlog - Hobbyist Arrested For Bringing Homemade Clock

Devoted electronics engineer Dave (from Australia, not Austria) briefly discusses his disdain for the appalling situation with Ahmed Mohammed's suspension/arrest. Keep building!

Why'd he choose a briefcase to stuff electronics into?

If you were a airline security agent, (I mean YOU actually had the job) and that slid through the xray machine, what would you do?

The only reason he thought it was cool to make a briefcase clock is because of the whole "*giggle*, see!!! Terrorist alarm clock! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, cuz you know, like, my name sounds terroristy?? get it? get it ???" situation with his name.

This compares to the kid who got in shit for chewing his pop tart into a gun shape and going "pew pew" at classmates, in that Billy the Pop Tart Kid was a complete clusterfuck from the adults perspective, and this was a clusterfuck started by a juvenile joke gone bad (and then went clusterfuck).

Bomb Clock Kid is a victim of racist overreaction, not complete stupidity.

I want Microsoft to send the Pop Tart Kid an XBox.

You seem to have answered your own question.

Mind read much? Based on his name and his homemade clock in a briefcase you figured out what his thoughts and his intentions were? That's an insanely bold assumption my friend with the information you have.

When you have a pile of loose electronics, whether it's something you've salvaged from another device or components on a bread board, and you want the assembly to be something close to mobile, where are you going to put them? In a case of some sort, something you have laying around.

It could have just as easily have been mounted in a shoebox. This little beat-up case was just what was chosen. The reasoning behind it being chosen is only what you put into it based on.. Well, whatever is going through your mind in regard to the matter. I only see convenience at first glance, not some nefarious intent.

Also, note the size of the AC/9volt plugs in comparison to the case. I'm not sure it qualifies as a 'briefcase', really.

I thought it was a normal sized brief case with a giant display, now that I know it's a pencil case, I take what I said back. Texans are screwy.

I thought it was a full sized briefcase, the video never seems to use anything but police-released photos which are shit for size comparison without pausing it.

Now that I know it's in a pencil case, the reaction it got is completely ridiculous to me.

Still want Pop Tart kid to get an Xbox, though.

and.. now we know , the kid is a troll , His dad is an activist and probably controlled the kid, or the kid is just a good learner (no one said he isn't smart) and trolled on his own.
Obama is inviting the Muslim troll to the white house, maybe Barrack wants another Nobel prize .

After hearing more of the story, it is seeming more and more like this probably was a fishing expedition for 'racial and/or religious injustice'.
He was, reportedly, repeatedly asked by numerous teachers to put his clock away, as it would make some people nervous (and already had), instead he continued to take it to class after class until one teacher (in an English class, his 4th class?) insisted on an explanation about what he was showing around the class, and he steadfastly refused to give any at all.
He could not have intentionally made himself any more suspicious without putting a ski mask on, IMO. I hope all these offers dry up if it becomes more clear this was all intentional on the student's (parent's?) part. I sure don't want to see that kind of baiting behavior rewarded.

EDIT: As a side note, any clock with an alarm could actually be a bomb...or at least a trigger. My brother was suspended in the 80's for an altoids tin with a battery, mercury switch, and buzzer. When you picked it up it buzzed, and inside was a note saying "boom, this was a bomb, you just died"....he played 'gottcha' at the time (kind of a spy vs spy game played at schools back then, where you had an assignation target and someone else targeted you) and that was his best way of 'killing' his opponents. It was also proper to suspend him for bringing that totally safe device to school then, IMO.

NicoleBeesays...

That would be unfortunate if it turned out to be the case. Any citations for us to read up on suggesting such a thing?

it is interesting to see how this is playing out.this poor kid is getting used to promote narratives for people who really do not care about this kid,and it appears..he may not even have invented anything.
https://youtu.be/CEmSwJTqpgY

he probably just did this to impress his teacher and..wow..did things get out of hand fast.

on the one hand you have an authoritarian state who is petrified of brown people pissing themselves, and on the other you have people using this for political expediency to further a narrative.

and all ahmed wanted to do was impress his engineering teacher.(my assumption)

NicoleBeesays...

It seemed to be made clear quite quickly that the clock parts were largely if not entirely stock, and from the look of it I would agree with that. That is mostly what's being seized on right now. I don't know what that means about his intentions, and really, from the guessing and assumptions one way or another, it does not seem that anyone else does either. I guess we'll find out.

Was he circuit bending? Was he simply putting an old clock in a new case? Did he fix it? Was he trying to provoke a reaction? Time will tell. I'll leave the speculation alone, because it's getting pretty ugly.

My guess is it at least says his intentions were NOT to show off the engineering he had done by creating a clock...since he didn't create a clock.
If he wasn't proud of his engineering skills and showing them off (which he can't possibly have been doing if he just took the case off a clock, right?), what are we left with?
Again, I'll say I hope all the offers he's received dry up as/if it becomes evident what actually happened. It's certainly turning out different from the way the story was portrayed in the beginning, and daily is looking more like an intentional baiting incident rather than an instance of negative profiling.

You both seem to be trying very hard to ignore the obvious.
This was a stunt , the kid is a pawn, and you were duped . Its hard to admit that you jumped on the bandwagon, but you should learn when to tap out.

love you guys. TTYL

I don't understand. I asked you for some information related to your claims. Do you have any or not? It's entirely possible this was what happened.

Sorry for the confusion Nicolebee, I tried to respond to a comment by newtboy that was a response to you, so I lumped you guys together for my comment.
I didn't send you sources for my "claims" because I thought that in the 24 hours since I made my "claims" , that this story has been pretty much been proved as a hoax. I think you can just read the news and see that this is a false story driven by other motives. Its obvious that in the next few days everyone is going to distance themselves from this story. You should probably get ready to let go yourself. This was a well executed trolling.

That was pretty dismissive.. Are you saying that you don't have access to news? Or . that you only exist in Videosift and need to have everything spoon fed to you?
Are you still arguing that this was just some random Muslim that was picked on by an oppressive state!!
I am saying that there enough facts available for me to say that this is a deliberate action to create a response.

I'm sorry, I don't know what to tell you. I asked for some further information about your other message, and got arrogant ranting in return. I do have access to the news. I'm especially interested in what you said about the dad and how he is supposed to figure into things.

Arrogant ranting?? That hurt.
anyway... if you just google his dad, Muhammad Muhammad, I'm sure you will see he has a political agenda , ie : Islam acceptance.
Do you expect the whole thinking world to believe that the son of a Muslim activist whose whole agenda is to accept Islam , built a suitcase clock and took it to school and ignored his teachers advice (4 times)to get rid of it AND refused to explain to the authorities why he had done so. Do you expect us to believe this bullshit story?

OK, then I don't understand.
I was basically agreeing with YOU that it looks like it was a planned stunt on his part more and more with every new bit of information...and you reply that I'm trying hard to ignore the obvious and have jumped on a bandwagon of support for him? What?!?
