Charlie Brooker Reviews The iPad

I love his ideas on alternative uses for it
conansays...

hahaha just had the ipad in hands this weekend for the first time. and charlie is absolutely right about it. waste of money, time and resources.

Hi, I'm going to spout the same shit as a million people have done before me but I'm on TV so I'm more witty.

The "bigger" thing is the most annoying. Open any iPhone app on the iPad and tell me how you feel about using them after using the native iPad tailored versions or open any unique iPad app and tell me how you'd offer that interaction on the iPhone with the same degree of ease of use and functionality.

You don't have to like the iPad but you don't have to be a moron about it

Horrible review. That arrogant mocking is the kind of attitude you get from unthinking haters. I would never trust their opinion. I happen to agree with his basic critique, but his attitude was so repulsive I think I'll give the iPad another chance. After all, I enjoyed playing Plants vs Zombies on it.

Shepppardsays...

I'd consider getting one if the 3G ones weren't absolutely rediculously expensive.

I have an Ipod Touch, I've got tons of things on it, but my major gripe is the fact that it's a pain in the ass to hit the minor details on things.

Surfing the web especially. Ever tried to use the search function on videosift on an iphone/touch? Damned near impossible.

It's light enough that reading a book on it would be a decent use, and being able to watch movies on it, hell that's still never a bad thing..

My only true issue with it is cost, if I'm spending that much money, why not spend a bit more to get a better laptop.

Yeah, that's pretty much his schtick

It's a comedy show. He's putting it on for laughs. Do we have to explain when people are simply taking the piss? Whether he means it or not is not relevant - the entertainment value is. But fanboys do need something to get worked up about.

BTW Newswipe has been nominated for a Bafta so well done to Brooker on that front.

Correct deano. Brooker has had many sifts here with newswipe and screenwipe and whatever-else-wipe. They always do very well, people find the guy witty and clever.

Yet when an apple product gets bashed by him, they scrunch their eyes up real tight, pound their fists on their desks and squeak their fury.

If people bothered to think for a second, this is a recent SIFT, it isn't a recent production by brooker. He made this long long ago when the ipad was just announced, so all these things you're saying he's "repeating", him and his ilk were the ones who came up with it.

Brooker's paid to be sarcastic and pessimistic about the media, or politics, or whatever his show is about. He's made a living off it and he's pretty well acclaimed. Him and david mitchell are not dissimilar. Mitchell's just a bit more geeky.

An additional note, for those wondering about brooker's geekiness, he was editor of PC zone (like PC gamer, and coincidentally both owned by the same company, despite being rivals) for a good couple of years.

You might need a special phone.

"Twat indicator" is dead on btw. Just the other day I saw a guy walking down the street with an iPad in his hand, earbuds attached, listening to music. That's why people buy an iPad: so they can say "Look at me, I have an iPad". Consumer whorism at its worst.

NetRunnersays...

I'm still waiting for someone, somewhere to counter this argument about the iPad.

I sorta see a use for it as a web surfing slate, but $500 minimum for what it does? Fuck no.

handmethekeysyousays...

Fine, I'll be that guy. Before I get into it, I'll have you all know that I was the first to hate on the ipad when it was announced.

That being said, having played with a couple, here's what I feel it would be good for:

• Games (if you're into that sort of thing)
• Reading (again, if you're into that sort of thing (tapping a word and going straight to the dictionary is huge, especially when you're reading grandiloquent authors))
• Sharing (show and tell w/pictures, videos, sharing documents, looking at maps, etc.)
• Things you do on your iphone that would be better with a larger screen (and you don't need in your pocket).
• Things you do on your laptop that don't involve much typing but do require a lot of trackpad input.
• Art projects, trust me, they'll be all over YT soon (the first thing I got an urge to do when I got one in my hands was draw a cock and hold it in front of my crotch, seriously, first thing (what that says about yrs. truly will hopefully be left to conjecture))

I'm not shelling out for one. I read, but I limit my game playing and I hate sharing. But if someone gave me one, I would happily make some good use (read: cock drawings) of it.

Ebook reading on the iPad sucks in comparison to dedicated ereaders. Reading on a Nook or Kindle is as second-nature as reading a regular book, and actually a lot more enjoyable (for long reading sessions, they're easier on your body than a real book, for that matter.)

All the iPad has going for it is that gimmicky swipe page-flip.

handmethekeysyousays...

Touch screen is easier for accessing the dictionary than the Kindle's silly little joystick. Also the dictionary integration is more graceful.

Also, if reading on an iPad, you can pause to google a concept or research related works, email a pertinent passage to a friend or collaborator, etc.

I'm not saying it's an all around better ereader than a Kindle (since it's not, you know, a dedicated ereader), but it's disingenuous to say it's only benefit is a visual gimmick.>> ^KnivesOut:

The nook has dictionary integration. It's not as intuitive as directly touching a word, but it's not terrible (you use arrow keys on the bottom screen to move the word.)

It's true, there's no browser integration from within a book. Browser integration isn't worth $250 to me.

Deanosays...

I like the idea of a slate/pad/tablet for browsing but it's got to be nice and cheap because I am going to drop it. Let's hope the competition comes up with something nice.

handmethekeysyousays...

I would also say that the Nook is only offered in 6", coming in @ $259; the same price as the 6" Kindle. The 9.7" Kindle (the same size as the ipad) is $489; only $10 less than the 16gb iPad. This is a bit of an apples an oranges comparison when you're using a smaller screen size.>> ^KnivesOut:

MilkmanDansays...

I'm not a big fan of Apple personally. In the days of the first Macintoshes I preferred a PC because I could swap out bad drives, add RAM, etc. myself whereas the Macs were a very closed system. I never wanted an iPod because I don't want to mess with iTunes/DRM/etc.; just let me plug in the device as a USB drive and drag my MP3s to it. I don't want an iPhone because I don't want big brother telling me what software I can or cannot install. I don't really want an iPad; if I'm shelling out the cash I'd like to have Flash in my browser and have more control over software options in general.

So from the extremely narrow viewpoint of myself as an individual consumer, Apple has failed to ever make a compelling product that I personally wanted to spend my money on.

And yet, I'm a rather HUGE fan of Apple as a force, an impetus for change, and a contributor to competition and forward progress in IT and consumer electronics. I highly respect Apple as a producer of consumer goods to be purchased by people other than me. So many products and systems that I *do* like were pioneered, revolutionized, or popularized by Apple that I almost find it unfortunate that I have never personally purchased an Apple product in order to contribute to their coffers directly. So it goes.
