Introducing Beggar's Corner

There is a new section of the site called Beggar's Corner that is dedicated to you and your oh-so-precious personal queued vids that you think just need a little more attention and affection to get sifted up.

Effective immediately and for all members, if you have 1 Power Point available you can invoke *beg on a personal queue video of your own to move it into Beggar's Corner where it will reside for a max of three days, effectively giving it double the normal queue time in a much smaller arena so it'll have a much better chance at drawing in some viewers. Also to help PQ videos, the main sidebar panel in Beggar's Corner is a listing of the latest videos that were expired from the main queue into the submitter's personal queue.

Currently, there is no place in the site header linking to Beggar's Corner because we aren't exactly sure where it would be best placed yet. Please help us test it out and make sure everything is functioning correctly. If you find any problems, please report them here. Otherwise, please just report here your thoughts on this new feature.

Update
Possibly worthy of its own ST post, but I'll just add here that we've gone ahead and moved the Dead Pool tab down into the header linkbar and now it's only displayed for logged-in members (since it's really useless for non-members to view). We replaced the Dead Pool tab with the "B.C." tab which takes you to Beggar's Corner. (The full text would just take up too much space.)

Also, I didn't mention previously but Beggar's Corner is channel-specific, so if you view it from within a channel you'll see only the corresponding BC videos.

Nice idea. My only issue with this is that it seems to me like it shouldn't be linked to power points, and should be on a timer of its own. I only suggest this because it'll seriously reduce the amount of * promotes and * qualities, because selfish bastards (ie: me will just be using their power points to * beg their own videos.

This could be a great home for material that was passed over, submitted just shy of the full moon, lacked a thumbnail, had an inconveniently placed mole, was sandwiched between U-Slurp-at-Photoslop No. 37 and a Z.P. Review of Pong, or just had a bad hair day.

I'm glad to be the first beggar and I can report that everything's A-ok.

jonny says...

Needless-to-write, I like the idea. But instead of a time based limit on vids in the list, why not use a limit on the number of vids any one user can have in the list? That would keep the list small, as will tying it to power points, but without impacting the current practice of promotes or giving preference to donators.

How about this for [OCD-induced] tab positions:

Top Sifts, Hot, Sifted, Unsifted, Beggar's Corner, Dead Pool, Channels, Playlists, Sift Talk, Blogs

I thought the point was to get rid of one invoke (requeue), not replacing it with another.
and will power points be VS official currency from now on? what's next, you get a requeu if you send 20 VS invites through your facebook account? i know VS is all about change, but you're fucking up the natural order here

MarineGunrock says...

kulpims, you have a power point by default. You don't have to send any money to VS to be able to use this invocation. None of the videos in there currently are from members that made a donation, and only one is from a charter member.

This is not just another requeue. The only similarity is that it gives expired videos some more attention. What it doesn't do that requeue did is: 1) clog up the main queue with stale material; 2) change the status of your video from PQ; 3) allow an individual to have several listed at once; 4) create an un-browse-able, endless series of pages full of videos; 5) allow a video to be re-listed every 12 hours (generally only once every 2 days when your PPs recharge); 6) allow you to re-list a video before it has expired in the main queue; 7) give every single submitted video the ability to sit in the queue forever until getting published.

The Power Point system is simply a way to allow people to exercise their powers in a controlled way where they have a choice in how they want to do so and they cannot be overused. And if you want to help support us to get more PPs, well you're helping keep this ship afloat, so thanks. If not, just continue using the site for free and continue freely talking down to we who are trying our very best to prevent having to pack up and say goodbye, even if that means "fucking up" what you consider "the natural order." (It's a comfortable luxury to insult people without spending a moment of consideration on why we might do the things we do, isn't it.)

>> ^MarineGunrock:
Lawl @ condescending tone in the post.

Maybe I'm dense, but what part of the post seems condescending, MG? I was actually being sincere... Re-reading it, I guess my opening line could be taken that way. Not my intention at all. (I guess my brain was tired when I wrote it.)

look, i'm a member here cause I believe you're doing a great job and I really appreciate your efforts. but don't talk to me like I'm some fucking free-loader just cause I didn't sign up for charter

arvana says...

Sensitive a little, kulpims? I didn't read that into Lucky's statement at all.

You know, there has been quite a lot of aggressiveness on this site over the past few months, and I find it kind of disturbing. Just because it's the Internet and most people on it are anonymous doesn't mean that everybody should have the freedom to vent all their frustrations on others through the site. Let's be polite in our disagreements, people.

Anyway, I like the *bėg idea, even though I just tried it and it felt a little degrading. Maybe a slightly more positive invocation could be found?

lucky760 says...

You've totally misconstrued my sentiments. All I'm saying that you complain about our decisions and changes but couldn't care less if we go under, and this is evidenced by your condescension and complete disregard for why we make some of the changes we make.

But I'm really not singling you out. There are lots of members that fall under this category.

arvana says...

Lucky, sounds like you need a holiday, dude. You're letting things get to you.

And everyone else who are the vocal minority.... it's an entertainment site -- no need to take everything so seriously!

lucky760 says...

Hehe. Thanks arvana. My typing mightn't show it, but things aren't really getting to me, however I could always use a holiday. Please disregard anything I've said. Ever.

Thanks JAPR. Also thanks to jonny who inspired the idea.

Oh and yeah "beg" might sound a little harsh, but let's call a shovel a shovel. It's all in good fun.

MarineGunrock says...

No, Lucky - I just honestly liked the way you wrote "oh-so-precious" up there. I too am sick of all the groveling about the lack of requeue. I've even noticed that most people bitching about it aren't even charter or contributing members anyway - so it's like, where do they get off bitching about a change to a free service?

Sarzy says...

Well, I'm the king of the bitchers about the absence of a requeue, and I'm a charter member, and I've contributed, so... bitch bitch bitch. (speaking of which -- and since you brought it up -- I think the whole * beg thing is a decent idea, but it's basically just an inferior requeue. Why have a hamburger when you can have a steak?)

Kreegath says...

Because with the requeue system you could keep all of your videos alive indefinately, which is contradictory to the quality control idea.
With the power point system you get a very limited amounts of requeues and can only use them often enough to give one of your videos another go if you feel it's not gotten the attention you'd like for it to get.

smibbo says...

actually... I like it. I like that there's a small nod towards vids that might get overlooked but it comes with a price. I think that's great.
I'm a charter member and I ddidn't complain about losing requeue. I dunno, I think the whole "personal queue" thing is great. Maybe its just psychological because I feel perfectly fine about vids being moved to "my personal queue" rather than "video FAILED..." you know?
Good Job Lucky!!

Farhad2000 says...

Clutter is all I see, BC is a terrible title for a tab.

I don't know it does nothing to redress the balance of what I see slowly occurring over time with VS, with more users and more video posts the average sift quality is diluting, because we are slowly reaching the sifters lower common denominator levels, yes there are more people on the site but because there is so much more to view most people aren't really interested to try anything new, so we have a very silly Top15 most of the time.

The community is becoming internalized within itself as well, this is seen from the comments to self posts themselves, how many videos ran up to Top15 because of common membership knowledge rather then quality.

Perhaps the collectives should be re individualized once again, right now the entire sift runs as one community when it should start breaking apart and creating new communities within themselves, this is a factor I really miss. The blogs need this especially badly, having them lumped together encourages consumption together, so the posts are not individual to the sifter at all.

Maybe all of this is not going to happen, but I dunno this is what I feel the whole site is heading to eventually, the sift becoming a venue for trashy disposable Internet video, the online equivalent of Bill Hick's American Gladiators.

I really think this stuff should be thought about.

fissionchips says...

Those are some very good suggestions Farhad [edit: your comment deserves its own post], however they don't directly address the problems you mentioned. As long as there is open registration and a lack of top-down moderation (two features that are key to the operation of the site), those trends will continue.

I agree that we can come up with a better name for the new tab. "2nd Run"? "resifted"?

rottenseed says...

I like the idea and I've already seen it work. I've gone in there and seen some gems. And I've kicked one of mine out of the pqueue. Good job guys. I don't think you read that enough around here, especially lately, and especially from me, but I think you're doing a great job balancing the requests of members' sometimes opposing viewpoints.

keep up the good work
