I'm actually trying to make my computer website more community based, with many ideas, how do I say it delicately, robbed from videosift. I'm writing a relatively large assignment on Web 2.0 and user-content sites and I'm developing my own website in the process, which is loads of fun (and hard work).

All I know is whatever you call it. The SIFT has got it. You know what I mean?

I don't think there is really a culture within the Sift. Culture implies a higher social interaction then currently exists, we have about as much culture as a art house movie theater with a bunch of regulars.

Apples and oranges, Farhad. I mean we are talking about internet communities. You can't compare it.

I think there's definitely a culture, as a loooong-time lurker on the sift I feel like there's a real "feel" to the sift. You guys should be commended because this is by far my favorite place for conversation, and there's something about the design that just feels like home.

Yes, meat-space culture and online culture are cousins, but slightly different in meaning I think.

A good art house movie theater with a bunch of regulars could have a culture IMHO - it's just a smaller version of a village.

I disagree, human interaction is what sparks culture, and to say there is no human interaction on the Sift is refuted by the thousands of comments and conversations that have and will continue to take place. Even art house theaters have cultures that can be built around them. The internet simply connects more people then meat-space will.

One pretty unique thing about the Sift is a small, human, core team. You guys ask for feedback when you change the site. Also the transparency about financials make it clear that it's not a big impersonal site.. more like a neighborhood diner than a McDonalds.

The sift has a pretty good culture especially when compared to the cultures larger internet communities (digg, reddit ect...) I think its because the sift has grown at a more gradual pace rather then exploding up like the others. You can spend as much time on the bigger sites and never see the same name twice, I like the sift because you become familiar with your fellow users.
