It's the intro to the Mike Judge Movie "Idiocracy". Check it out. It's actually hilarious and better on repeated viewings. I didn't find it as funny the first time through as I did catching it again later.

I've often wondered/worried about this. How quickly can natural selection come into effect?

I was thinking about it when I noticed bunches of dead kangaroos along the side of a highway. I wonder if we might be selecting for super brainy kangaroos who know how to use a cross-walk.

Scary because there is truth to it.

The only problem with this idea is that, in any sufficiently large gene pool (6-7 billion qualifies by a few orders of magnitude) the distribution of traits which have insignificant survival benefit (intelligence in this case) will remain stable, due to the availability of the necessary genes in the pool.

particularly because "intelligence" is a group of traits this will remain the case even if a growing population of people have only a subset of these traits, as two people of "sub-normal" genetic capacity could easily have all the genetic material needed to breed someone with all the genetic benefits for intelligence, though their environment will doubtless shape how these benefits are used, which may in fact increase the probability of intelligent people reproducing because intelligent =/=> intellectual.

The video is really about "intellectual" vs "trailer trash", but these are cultural, not genetic, traits. Cultural evolution is much more ambiguous then genetic, as many cultures (Christianity, Islam, Scientific Rationalism) are predatory and do not depend on breeding to increase their numbers.

I disagree dgandhi. I think the video is very much about "smart" vs "dumb".. They just used intellectual vs trailer trash to prove their point.. And for me it worked.. But I do agree with most of the other stuff you said, although I don't think it applies here.
