Very neat - I wonder how this would scale to higher resolution though? With a denser forest of string, less light gets to the back ones.
westysays...i belive thay are spaced out so no string is infront of another string . so the most likely issue you would have is that the projector would be less focused on the back strings. however for this typ of display a lazer projector would probably be used on a comercail leveal.
in stead of using strings you could use smoke as used in the 2d smoke screen displays whitch could be cool
Lolthiensays...how would you keep the smoke from dissipating.. I would think as this technology occurred you'd eventually get, from a projector's view, the thinnest possible lines that were so close together as to have no black space between them, and along with a light absorbing background, that would be as realistic as you could get.
Majortomyorkesays...Perhaps the addition of additional projectors would help overcome signal loss from front to back strings.

ReverendTedsays...Perhaps I'm missing a simple point, but how would smoke be of any utility? If I understand correctly, the renderer operates on the premise that a given column of pixels is at given depth. (Corresponding to a wire at that depth.) With smoke, all of the light would be diffused at all depths. You'd have a visible beam emanating from the projector, like shining a flashlight in a dusty room.

if you cant see the cube, its because its too much information
rychansays...I'm confused by this, because it's a significant technical achievement (especially if he wrote some form of automatic calibration with a camera-projector system), but he doesn't seem to understand what's going on.

Volumetric rendering is when virtual light is made visible as it passes through a semi transparent object. Light entering a smoky room or that cool underwater light beam effect you sometimes see in underwater movies for example.
This is more of a low resolution holographic display.
bamdrewsays...cool ... the idea, for those confused, is take a regular projector and shine it into a simple 3D mesh, instead of on a wall, to now display in 3D.
what I don't get is how the depth calibration takes place... is there a webcam above his projector?
He needs to map out a pattern for a PCB board fabricator to punch out on an array of large electronics boards, then get some thin wire (like 100um diameter tungston or something) cut the wire, stack the boards, thread the wire, solder to each end (hardest part) and the thread-count won't be as major a factor in resolution anymore.
jwraysays...This is a large and unwieldy apparatus.
Probably better alternatives:

* a helmet with a separate LCD for each eye.
jwraysays...If there exists a gas such that exitation by one frequency of light causes it to briefly become reflective of another frequency of light, then they could substitute lasers for stings and make a halfway decent holodeck (minus all tactile sensations, and perhaps minus the breathable atmosphere)
westysays...when i was on about using smoke what i had in mind was using this guys configeratoin however instead of string you could use jets of smoke , so u have a volumetric smoke screen.
what this guy is doing is esentualy creating a 3d feaild of pixels and then projecting onto them.
you could use this for shop windows or atentoin grabing aplicatoins the key is this set up would only cost hundreds where as curent other 3d technolagies cost alot.
