schlubsays...Yep, that's about right.
oblio70says...Matches my experience, too. And I though the Silmarillion had an issue with spastic character-references!
CrushBugsays...I wanted to hear more about that pack of wolves.
Drachen_Jagersays...I think George R. R. Martin has the world's most severe case of ADD.
I read the first three books in the series, and there are a ton of awesome ideas, but it feels like as soon as you get behind a character to cheer for them, they die. The murdered lord's children all get dire wolves as pets in the beginning, and I'm thinking, cool, that's going somewhere, but nada. Some of the wolves die, others run away. You never hear from them again.
The whole series is like that, completely unhinged. I don't know how it's so popular, or why it was made into a TV series. Maybe just the unpredictability of it, there's certainly no other reason to follow the series.
Fusionautsays...Don't forget about those characters who might be dead because someone claims they are but in all likelihood are probably alive given that Martin didn't write a gruesome death scene for them from their perspective.
SevenFingerssays...I don't know what it's like to read it, but I listened to the audio books which I recommend more!
xxovercastxxsays...I'm about 1/4 way through A Storm of Swords and I'm a bit surprised by the comments here.
If you're looking to be comforted with a simple story about how the good guys always win, Ice and Fire is not for you. If you're looking for a wild, unpredictable epic where you're not even sure who the good guys are, it's downright awesome. This is easily the most enjoyable fiction I've ever read.
MycroftHomlzsays...It could have been funny.

mentalitysays...Uh what?Spoilers:
Arya, Daenerys, John Snow, Bran, Tyrion are all alive and well. (Actually, one of them is in limbo, but whatever).
Your problem is that you bet on all the wrong horses. This is not another generic fantasy tale where house Stark is the good guys and House Lannister are the bad guys. There are a lot of flaws with the series, but unhinged and unpredictable are not on that list. The most popular prediction for the outcome of the series is actually quite interesting, and so far, all the books and pieces of the puzzle fit.
That said, GRRM is taking an awful long time with the set up, and if you didn't like the first 3 books, definitely don't bother with the next two.

You can enjoy the series if you like. I'm sure you have your reasons. I merely gave the reasons why I think it's a poorly written series. You can't dispute that, unless you claim I am not allowed to have my own opinions (which from what I can see are supported by many, many ex-George R. R. Martin fans).
I don't, and I am far from alone in my feelings toward the series. Every GoT booster says the same things as you. Problem is, it's a load. I read plenty of atypical fantasy, most of which I really enjoy. I stopped reading GoT when I realized it wasn't fun to read anymore.
Oh, and all the characters you mention either sucked IMO or were inaccessibly stupid, cruel, or annoying.
Pretending that it's good, because it's not enjoyable, is just pretentious by the way.
PHJFsays...Ice and Fire is enjoyable because it is well written. GRRM is one of those authors who just has a way with words.
matthewtibbenhamsays...Love the video, but it's official, will never read Game of Thrones.
mentalitysays...I was never questioning your personal taste, as I clearly stated that if you didn't like book 1-3, you're not going to like the rest of the series, and there's nothing wrong with that.
The problem is that when you say the series is unhinged and unpredictable, you are completely off base, because everything up to and including book 5 fits with original fan theories of how the series is going to turn out. Just because the characters that you like, those who you thought should be the main characters, turn out not to be, doesn't mean the series is unhinged. But it is a valid reason to not like the series.
And pretending that something is good because it's not enjoyable, really? Where did you get that idea from?
Anyways, just out of curiosity, what are some atypical fantasy books that you enjoy?

scifinerd96says...I love Game of Thrones, but this is so true and so funny.
