What If We Had No Moon?

This program looks at the science behind the formation of the Moon, it's importance to climate, tilt stabilization, life formation and actions on the tides. Voiced by Partick Stewart.

Part 2 looks at the effects of the full moon on life and nature, it is at http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=551_1182539558

Well the gravitational pull of the moon created tidal waves, think of the primordial ooze of complex molecules that science believes lead to life, the constant movement would create collision between these and lead to more complex molecules forming, thus in my mind leading to more complex life forming.

Well, the moon certainly helped. I just wonder if it is really a requirement. I think it may have taken a little longer but in the end there would have been life. Even without the moon, the rotation of the Earth already gives rise to currents etc.

Thanks Mishu, for the second part.

Funny, years ago I read Zecharia Sitchin's work regarding a "12th planet" and the origins of man, etc. This is exactly what he had surmised back in the 70's after decrypting the cuneiform on cylinder seals from ancient Sumeria.

Well take Mars or any of the planets for that example, they also rotate on their own but their shifting axis tilt changes mean that a sustainable atmosphere never forms. This is actually touched upon on the second part.

With regards to Europa, Yes I agree the same can be said only here we have Jupiter acting like a large magnet that created a probable ocean in Europa. But we have to realize that is due to the unique arrangement there, we do not know if it has actually given to life development. Though the prospect for it is there. How complex? We will have to see once the first probes start landing and penetrating the ice layer.

And hasn't anyone noticed that I linked Part 2 in the description? Next time i'll put it in a comment I use.

Actually what they said was that Earth mark I had life and intelligent life could have formed, but it would most likely be in the form of octopus or similar. Highly unlikely that ground based creatures could evolve. I still believe it could happen without the moon, just more unlikely and a lot slower. Besides, we already know life can exist that is not carbon and oxygen based, so I am also assuming these can survive and grow complex in more hazardous areas. I guess in the end we will need to find life elsewhere to be sure which one was correct. Lets hope we do. This universe is a lonely place without some other sentient life forms.

BTW, apologies, missed your link to the second part. Will put in my lenses next time ;-)

Un-BELIEVABLE! You people actually think that some rocks that god put by the ocean tell you that the earth is more than 6000 years old??? And that man went to the moon? I can't believe the naivete here! I think I'll go pray for you all.

I agree with all the Patrick Stewart upvote suggestions... also... I may be a radical but I believe the Earth has to be at least 6008 years old... minimum. I mean with leap years and everything it only makes sense!

Fascinating documentary, I had no idea that the moon is slowly moving away from us. That our children's children's (...) children will not enjoy its enchanting company, does not make me envy the future in as thorough completion as half an hour before now.

Unfortunately I must reluctantly contradict the mighty Mr. Stewart: the moon has been pretty much found to not effect crime rates, as was alluded to in part 2

"Lunar myths are frequently presented in films and works of fiction. "With the constant media repetition of an association between the full moon and human behavior it is not surprising that such beliefs are widespread in the general public" (Kelly et al. 1996). Reporters also "favor those who claim that the full moon influences behavior." It wouldn't be much of a story if the moon was full and nothing happened, they note."
