MaxWildersays...Why didn't he blow one of them up? I wanna see da boom!
Croccydilesays...I wonder how long it took for this to render... and when did the Unreal 3 engine get crepuscular rays? *reads* Oh wait sometime last year
Gabe_bsays...Title is a little misleading - 25,000 barrels is only a portion of the spills daily output, 35,000-60,000 barrels. The spill is currently estimated at up to 6 million barrels. Now that's a video I'd like to see, though it would probably take something like Google's server farm of Folding@Home to render it.

And I raise your 25k barrels to a cool 1 mill.

both videos are a bit misleading(don't know about this sift video).
if you'll take a look at fps counter of the explosion video, it's running at 0.5fps, which means it was either speed up or recorded in editor and then composited, either way it wasn't done in realtime.
with the 2nd video it didn't look like 1million barrels, if anything it looked less than the 1st video. also if you'll look at the ground you'll see that at some point barrels start to disappear/fall through the ground, so you are never looking at 1mill of barrels.
dannym3141says...Our barrels will blot out the sun.
Then we shall drill in the shade!
Edit: Additional
Why the fuck did he put a thick pillar in the centre? That mind numbing perspective is when he's going up into the sky and seeing the sheer height of the barrels. Putting a pillar inside it destroys the perspective.
jmdsays...mxx, yea, all the movies were rendered to run 30 fps..and the game saved the frames it rendered (very slowly) to the hd to be put together again in a video editor. The game really gets glitchy with that many objects. Infact I don't think anyone has been able to aim the camera at the center of the explosions on meg cluster barrel bombs without the game crashing.

Oddly the dude that created this went to pains to prevent earth-shattering kaboom. One of his youtube comments:
"Its funny you mention that because at first that's exactly what they did, but I had issues where the barrels at the top would pick up so much speed that they'd ignite a huge explosion force to the pile of barrels causing them to fly thousands of feet away, I had to give the barrels a max velocity for that specific reason as well as to have them fall slower then I was."
NetRunnersays...I'm surprised that this was the Unreal engine -- it looked like a Cryengine video (they really like falling oil barrels for some reason).
