djsunkidsays...ALMOST a dupe of http://www.videosift.com/video/Navy-Rail-Gun-Test-DESTROYS-Targets-at-5640-mph but it's a different target- and faster. Whoah.
Farhad2000says...Record broken is power outpute from 9 megajoule to 10 megajoule, they want 64 megajoule to replace stand off canons on Navy vessels.
blutruthsays...Thanks for the info djsunkid and Farhad, if everyone thinks it's too close to a dupe, let me know and I'll take it down.
But for now, I shall *requeue.
siftbotsays...Re-queueing this video for one more try; last queued Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 12:07am PST - requeue requested by submitter blutruth.
siftbotsays...Tags for this video have been changed from 'navy, railgun, electromagnetic, rail, gun' to 'navy, railgun, electromagnetic, rail, gun, slo mo, high speed camera' - edited by Oatmeal
Oatmealsays...This is really cool, but I changed the tags to include slow motion, becuase slo-mo videos always do very well.
jimnmssays...If it's an electro-magnetic gun, where are all those flames coming from?

If it's an electro-magnetic gun, where are all those flames coming from?
The flames are coming from air friction, it's like the flames off anything entering earth's atmosphere at high speed. The projectile is just coming out that fast.
cybrbeastsays...Wow, *promote

"The railgun gets its name from two highly conductive rails, which form a complete electric circuit once the metal projectile and a sliding armature are put in place. When current starts flowing through the device, it creates a powerful electromagnetic field that accelerates the projectile down the barrel at 40,000 gs, launching it in a matter of milliseconds. Aerodynamic drag along with a million amps of current heats the bullet to 1,000 °C, igniting aluminum particles and leaving a trail of flame in its wake. The researchers estimate the muzzle energy based on the mass and velocity of the bullet in the barrel and from precisely timed x-ray snapshots during flight."
siftbotsays...Promoting this video back to the front page; last published Friday, February 8th, 2008 1:36pm PST - promote requested by cybrbeast.
Duckman33says...*timeshift
siftbotsays...Adding video to channels (Timeshift) - requested by Duckman33.
14436says...awesome some new ways of making people dead this s#!ts just what israel needs
Sagemindsays..."Projectiles fired from an electromagnetic railgun will travel up to 290 miles in less than six minutes, exiting the atmosphere before hurling into their target at a velocity of 5,000 feet per second. The force of the impact will obliterate targets without an explosive aid. "

vairetubesays...hurray.. um.. i think.
cybrbeastsays...Well actually, this is more humane than normal weapons. Because it relies on its kinetic energy and not an explosion to cause damage, there is much less collateral damage and shrapnel. Also because the ship that fires it doesn't have to carry explosive rounds anymore, it is much less likely to blow up, potentially saving a lot of lives.

Well actually, this is more humane than normal weapons....
There is no "humane" way to kill someone violently. Trauma is trauma. 5000FPS terminal velocity will generate some hellish effects on target with a considerable amount of fragmentation... Think of it as standing at ground zero when a meteorite strikes.
cybrbeastsays...So Mark_D what you are saying is that it makes no difference to only take out the target, or to take out the target and kill the neighbors?
