Between the early 19th century furniture and the HDTV... I'm hopelessly confused as to what year this is from.

Maybe he had a financially tight upbringing, where he wouldn't have any exposure to these luxuries or their costs. Maybe he is genuinely unconcerned with keeping up with the Joneses and went to the show with friends. I for one find his lack of materialistic indoctrination refreshing!
