The Daily Show 2/11/10 - The Apparent Trap

TDS: Republicans want Hawaiians to understand how bad their system of government-mandated health care is for the country.
JiggaJonsonsays...

"aaaaaaaand what would you say to a Hawaiian who said 'That's just a bunch of folksy nonsense that doesn't have any real substance"

Ahhhh it puts a huge smile on my face to see these morons get their comeuppance on national TV.

Apparently writing comedy about Republicans keeps getting easier and easier. You basically just ask one a straightforward question, record their reply, air it unedited, and BOOM! Comedy gold. The jokes just write themselves.

That's what happens when your entire political platform is a fucking joke...

After I finish my MT training, I'll be able to work in Hawaii (among other cool places)... I might have to take up Lomi Lomi, but that's not such a bad thing...

Diogenessays...

hmmm, i'm from hawaii - grew up there, high school, university and worked in the restaurant/bar industry for over 10 years there... never had government-mandated health care -- up through university, i was paying $1300 a year in cash for private health and dental coverage, which also had a troubling deductible -- after college, when i began working, i had no medical insurance... i just couldn't afford it, and employers there are very good (at least in that particular industry) at keeping the average of your weekly hours below 20 (i actually had three jobs because of this)-- employers would also ask us to work off-the-clock, and it made sense because the state converts your time on-the-clock to an average of your supposed tips... so the more hours you work (with or without tips) the more the government says you're making from tips -- i had co-workers 'fired' for demanding our employer cover them, because the '20 hours a week' scheme was based on, iirc, yearly or quarterly averages of your working hours - so employers could delay giving you health care until you were 'full-time' which few employees ever reached

who knows, it's been a few years since i've been back... but i think this piece is a bit one-sided and employs some selective editing
