9453says...Very cool. I've seen lots of optical illusions but it's nice to experience illusions of the other senses.
9453says...Also is there anyone under the age of 20 on the sift who can hear this last one? I can only hear a slight clicking, but I know I can't hear an 18kHz signal anyhow. It's possible that the audio codec (presumably DCT?) has discarded the signal.
Zonbiesays...I could hear the signal, it is there, some of these illusions, barbershop and metchbox as well as others are here on the sift
great post
cybrbeastsays...Very interesting, but badly edited video, some of the explanations were on screen much too short.
I blogged about high frequency tones some time ago.
If you want to hear to how many kHz your hearing goes, you can check it out on this ringtone site:
http://www.freemosquitoringtones.org/
These ringtones are used by kids so they can hear their phone in class for example without the teacher hearing it.
Depressingly enough these high frequency tones are also used as an areal denial system in some areas in my country and others where they don't want youngsters hanging around. Very annoying and an infringement on liberties if you ask me.
mefasays...I am about to turn 25 and I can barely, BARELY, hear the tone. I had to turn the TV down though and really focus, so I wouldn't be able to use it as a ringtone. I tried the site cybrbeast wrote about and found out that I am able to hear the 18kHz tone there too, but would need the 17.4kHz tone to be able to use it as a ringtone with any efficiancy.
dannym3141says...The 2 scales one didn't work on me, i could just hear 1 scale in 1 ear, another scale in the other.. The falling bells didn't work either.
The phantom voices one i giggled at because i could hear "no way", maybe what i was thinking!
Also as for the last one i'm 25 and i could hear it very, very easily.

I guess phantom limb syndrome would be an example of an illusion involving the sense of touch. Is there such a thing as a "taste" illusion?
Maybe the Miracle Fruit.

I also heard "no way", but it warped into "no brain", I was having a hard time with some math, so that might be related.
Aniatariosays...man that is soo freaky! I cant get enough of it.
hixsonjsays...I remember first hearing phantom melodies after listening to Van Halen do crazy guitar tapping.
BcrdNColasays...I'm almost 30 and could hear the tone, though faintly.
Sniper007says...I'm 28, I could hear the tone. It was very quiet though.
SaNdMaNsays...I'm 26, and I could hear it fine.
