Seriously, the Republican congressmen are actually the dumbest people in America, right?

"The Chinese pay zero capital gains tax."

China has a capital gains tax, so maybe he's talking about tax evasion? Their income tax also tops out at 45%, vs 35% in the US (I think I read that correctly).

Either way, the capital gains tax rate in China is not zero. Perhaps he's getting his financial data from the same place conservatives normally get their "scientific" data.

Actually, Republican politicians are pretty smart. They're succeeding in pushing this blatantly hypocritical agenda. It's the voters, the people that are allowing this charade to go on, that are the dumbest people in America.

I don't agree that they're dumb. They're just busy and not being told the truth and there's tons of reasons why they're allowing and have been allowing America to be run this way but it's not cause they're dumbs.

This man is a genius. I love how the most entertaining shows also happen to be the most factually relevant from a news perspective. Why don't those idiots who watch FOX come over to our side for once? Not only will they be more entertained, but they won't have to listen to lies and misinformation.

So, people are incompetent? Because that is the word that comes to my mind with your description of busy/sloppy. They are too busy? Maybe people need to stop being so busy while a bus crashes into their god-damn living rooms.

People are busy because; A-they have made themselves busy searching for the next stupid fad, app, or gizmo they really do not need in life but crave so they can say they are cool B-Because people cannot accept a normal care free lifestyle.

In fact, a care free political system cannot be stood for either by people. We love sensationalism!!! And we love it now!!! How dare the evil commie Liberals ruin everything!!! I am voting republican and for freedom! Of course they are commies too!!! I am voting democrat!

What would people have to complain about then? That is the reason we have both parties being a bunch of softblows... It is the same reason atheists need religion to feel important... bash bash bash.

The Neolib left swallow camels while straining at gnats on this point. The reason this gets traction is because the GOP as a party is the group that typically provides at least some action on the principles of small government and fiscal responsibility. Reagan cut taxes and wanted to cut spending (but couldn't as much as he wanted because of the Democrat congress). Democrats LOVE to say "CLINTON balanced the budget!" Bzzzt! The Presidency doesn't hold the purse. It was the 1994 Gingrich GOP congress that balanced the budget - against Clinton's wishes.

Conservative president cuts taxes: result = prosperity. Conservative congress reduces spending: result = prosperity. Sadly, there has never been both a conservative President & conservative Congress that together worked to BOTH cut taxes AND reduce spending at the same time. But when either of these two critical conservative platforms takes place (tax cuts & spending cuts) it is the GOP that is advancing them - not Democrats. This is why the GOP can plant a flag on the topic of deficits and the public buys it - however undeserved it may be for a particular generation of GOP politicians.

Hypocrisy? Sure. The GOP's performance on fiscal conservatism is spotty at best. Many of the GOP today have the same 'ruling class' mentality as the liberal left wing. Big government, big spending, tax happy jerkwads.

This is why people are so ticked off at them. They talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. The American public do not like leftist liberal policy. Every poll today shows that the overwhelming majority of the people want FISCAL CONSERVATISM. Tax cuts, spending cuts, and balanced budgets. This is what the people want, and what both the GOP and the Democrats refuse to give us. The left hates the Tea Party, but it only exists because the people identify more with Tea Party principles than they do with the GOP as it stands today.

Of course people want "lower taxes" and "less spending"... those same people also want it done without touching education, public safety, infrastructure, social security, medicare, or the military.

You can win elections by promising to balance budgets, but as soon as you start cutting programs you get replaced by the next guy promising big buzz words with as few specifics as possible.

No argument. The problem is the GOP doesn't want to do that because they are just like Democrats in the sense that they want to keep eating and promising free lunches. America for 20+ years has been living in a government sponsored 'benefits bubble'. Everyone thinks they can get free this & cheap that and politicians have spent the farm for their votes. This is not a GOP/Democrat issue. This is a "political class" issue. There are a few glittering jewels in the mine like Christie in NJ and Chaffitz from Utah - but they are far too rare.

This is a problme that is not going to be solved unless (A) the government completely collapses or (B) voters collectively wise up and vote in a couple generations of true fiscal conservatives. This election cycle gives some very distant gleams of hope that (B) might happen - but I'm pessimistic. I think America has already reached the Alexander Tytler point of no return...

"A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is followed by a dictatorship."

We see this happening right before our eyes. More wisdom - same guy...

“From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to complacency; From complacency to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”

In my cold assessment of the American condition, the U.S. POLITICAL CLASS is firmly decided on "dependance" and is starting to push into "bondage". The American PEOPLE however, are factionalized into about 30% "liberty", 20% "complacency", 20% "apathy", and 30% "dependance". By and large most of the public falls towards the "Liberty" side but you flash enough baubles to get 21% of the complacency/apathy vote and BOOM the U.S. is running over a cliff to tyranny.

That's what happened with Obama. Only what can be described as the collective insanity of emotion based stupidity elected that doofus. If he was in ANY other country, he would already be swaggering around in a uniform with epaulettes and making everyone call him "Commandant". He's a disaster, and polls are showing that even the apathetic and complacent realize they made a horrible mistake electing that specimen.

But too little - too late I fear. I think the government is too addicted to spending, and the public too addicted to the lie of 'free/cheap' government stuff. Loose fiscal policy will collapse this great nation, and there will be a period of subseqent balkanization. At this point, I fear it is inevitable.

The core conservative plan:

It all won't matter because the Rapture(tm) approaches... any moment now... any moment now. Ok.. not that moment.. but any moment now. Just wait, and you will see. How about.... now! Ok. Not then. But soon. Ok? Very soon. You just wait and see. But. Remember to repent first! Or you'll end up burning in hell like all the unsaved socialist libtards. Yes... and a magical zombie undead god named Jesus.

*random rant*

Yes. Jesus is God himself, fathered by God, himself, by a virgin *cough* mother. So he himself is his own father, the child of himself, and the savior, universal creator for the entire universe who happened to be born in a poor farming community in the middle of the desert a few thousand years ago. Why? So he could kill himself to make a pointless example that didn't need to be made. Because gosh darnit. It sure was something cool to do. Plus. He etched his 10 commandments on stone that by accident got broken moments before being presented to his people. Why? Because some doof threw them to the ground.. if only he put the 10 commandments in an I-Pad and gave it to Moses. How convenient would that have been? What about paper? Couldn't he have used paper? A lot lighter, plus it won't break as easily. Shit. You'd think the all universal creator God himself would know better than to put his 'manual' for humanity to live by on something a tad less fragile? Oh well. Mysterious ways. Yes. that is it. Mysterious ways.

I'm tending more and more to agree with the average Jon Stewart viewpoint, but this one missed the mark in my opinion. I think that it would be possible to believe that the Bush tax cuts should stay and believe that we need to work at cutting the deficit, while still remaining logically consistent. Yes, that money has to come from somewhere. No, it doesn't have to come exclusively from higher taxes.

Most of the clips of republicans shown here completely missed the point of fiscal conservatism, they are just in effect trolling for anything to criticize Obama about. But it would be possible to cut government spending, demand a higher standard of competition and reasonable prices for government funds being spent (which would hold for Bush's war profiteering cronies as much as it would hold for the "liberal elite" pet projects), and in general keep the list of "stuff we expect the government to do for us" smaller.

The lean, mean, and efficient approach to government is what initially sold me on republican ideology over the democrats methods. The problem now is that I don't think that the GOP / republican party actually want a small government any more than the democrats, they just want to toss their massive and inefficient budget in other directions. So by all means, criticize the republican talking heads for that, but don't sell me the line that there is a cut and dry "lower taxes = higher deficit, higher taxes = lower deficit" equation at work.

Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...

Bingo Milk. You could easily cut 50% from government spending without really touching the important things governemnt does. The formula is lower taxes AND cutting spending. Doing only half of the formula can help, but in order for the miracle that is capitalism and free enterprise to work its wonders, the government has to stop being such a horrible anchor. Cut taxes (yes - for the rich too) and lower spending combined with freedom. This is the solution - not higher taxes, higher spending, and an all-intrusive nanny state.

While that is likely true, I believe John Stewart's point is that for the last year and a half a republican leaders haven't wasted a single breath in their cries over the deficit and that it needs to be handled not only as soon as possible but that every step need be taken to cut it or the world will virtually end. But now, they have turned about face and claim that the single largest largest portion of the deficit isn't that big a deal and that the top 2% if they don't keep their tax cut, won't create new jobs. Mind, they completely ignore the fact that those people haven't created any jobs in the first place.

While certainly the deficit could be cut in other ways, ignoring the largest portion of that, which could simply be alleviated by letting a tax cut fall at a date that was selected by the republicans themselves, is preposterous. The republicans shown here are very clearly demonstrating that they don't really care about the deficit at all (considering they created it in the first place, many already knew this) and simply are pandering to an uneducated and fearful base.
