Star Trek's Warp Speed Evolution

"Warp speed! The evolution of the warp drive effect from the Star Trek movies, from the spectacular neon streak photography of The Motion Picture through the rather less awesome animated trails of the later TOS movies to the feeble CG of Nemesis, where they couldn't even be bothered to include the 'warp stretch' effect. And what's with those smoke trails? Has the Enterprise got a cracked manifold? *sigh*"

Wait, you can't engage warp drive in a planetary atmosphere -- you'd rip the entire atmosphere out!
NERD RAGE!!!!!!!!!!

Hahaha. I had to stifle my urge to shout something about that. My thoughts were more along the lines of the atmosphere ripping the ship apart, but I don't know enough about Star Trek shielding to know if that's a problem.

After turds like Nemesis and Insurrection the franchise was DOA.

Amazing as it seems, Trek fans alone cannot make a Trek movie profitable. You need to reach moviegoers with girlfriends.

OK I'm joking about the last part...put down the batleth.

Abrams' Trek was a big pile of lens flared poo.

I'm going to go with TNG-era warp drive as my favorite (up until the movie First Contact). Yes, that includes the warp drive from the latest move. Sure it has a nice kick and looks powerful, but the previous ones make it look effortless. "Yeah, we can go faster than the speed of light. No big deal."

That said, the old starburst from TOS really does bring on the nostalgia.
