Januarisays...Careful ya'll... watch you don't step in the BS
braindonutsays...^ hehehe, hard to say we're stepping in BS, when we're ALL stuck swimming in an ocean of it.
Regardless, Specter is correct. The republican party has been moving further and further to the right, and it's a good reason for the more moderate republicans to abandon the party. (Whether than means they become a democrat or not... depends) I don't think anything he's said is unreasonable.
quantumushroomsays...Good riddance.
vairetubesays...you didnt get rid of him... he's just smart enough to know how to get re-elected. (so essentially a democrat all along).
he'll be here... and it doesnt even gaurantee a filibuster proof majority.
non-news except for the fact it's personally satisfying to watch the "republicans" squirming.
Enzobluesays...^ ^ ^ with Franken getting in it does make it filibuster proof.

Good riddance.
Oh yeah, you need less guys who are willing to vote with their conscience rather than towing the party line down the drain.
Just make sure whoever you get to replace him is a racist sexist homophobe, the right will be happy as punch and you'll be able to crap on about how minorities caused him to not get elected.. ; )
Throbbinsays...Specter be da man!
Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...The republican party has been moving further and further to the right, and it's a good reason for the more moderate republicans to abandon the party.
Firstly - the Republican party has been going further LEFT since 1988. Blue Dogs, RINOs, and 'compassionate conservative' Republicans have pulled the party to the point where it is indistinguishable from the Democrat party on many fundamental issues. Not, all issues of course. But certainly enough when you can EASILY say that the party is more liberal in 2009 compared to 1989 or 1999. To state that the Republican party has been drifing further 'right' is complete and utter baloney.
And second of all... Specter is not now and NEVER was a 'moderate' Republican. What a joke. Specter is a liberal RINO and he's been that for decades.
I know why Democrats and news pundits are doing this. They want it to look like Poor Mr. Innocent 'Moderate' Specter was abandoned by the evil hardcore rightwing Republican party. Boo hoo - what's a 'modeate' to do? Sob - guess all people who say they're 'moderate' better become Democrats...
Except that's total BS.
What is really happening is that Specter is a LIBERAL. And since he acts more like a liberal democrat, he is getting de-pantsed in his primary by a more conservative cantidate... He's losing because he behaves more like a Democrat when he was supposed to be Republican.
He isn't losing because he's a moderate being abandoned by right-wing radicals. He's losing because he is a left-wing radical being abandoned by moderates.

No, it just means they have 60 people. Breaking a filibuster requires 60 votes, and I don't see Specter changing his voting habits over this.
Winstonfield_Pennypackersays..."I don't see Specter changing his voting habits over this."
Specter votes with the Democrat party half the time. They don't really need him to change his voting habits much.
Sketchsays...Well, the Republicans have douchebag Joe Lieberman, so the Dems can have Specter. Doesn't change much.
Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...Brass tacks though is that it will still be tricky to actually achieve clochure on a vote depending on the issue. Believe it or not there really are Democrats in many 'conservative' areas who dare not support anything and everything that comes down the pike. Getting 60 votes in the Senate isn't always going to be a given even with Crazy Al, Jumpin' Jim Jeffords, and Arlen "Screw you, voters!" Specter.
That's the real amazing thing here. Specter getting all testy about losing his primary. "I'm not gonna let my 27 year career be ruined by the political process that GAVE me a 27 year career!" Uh - it's called the democratic process, Specter... Guess he's getting tired of having to get 'votes' and stuff...
honkeytonk73says...He is going to hell now, because the invisible magic man in the sky is going to get mad for his betrayal. The magic man prefers Republicans over Democrats, and blesses the USA because he/she/it recognizes borders of our nation state.
God Bless the USA(tm), because God prefers US over them.
