Richard Dawkins on The Late Late Show, 18.09.09 (1 of 2)

There really is not a nice way to tell someone that their life's beliefs were a waste of time. I agree though, this interviewer seemed very uninformed. Richard addressed that when he says "You know none of this is really about the book."

It was really in poor taste to plant a priest in the audience and sort of spring a debate on him while he's presumably out trying to promote a new book. That alone is a testament to the fear associated with this rational view of the world and how so many people seem unable to accept it.

I wont be the first to say it but let me say that my transition from theist to atheist was very liberating. After really coming to terms with my feelings I looked around and was excited by everything I saw. I was much more appreciative of everything because I considered myself lucky to be here at all, and lucky enough to understand the truth behind everything that was happening around me, like shedding a second skin.

^ I've struggled with that as well. Most of my best friends are theists, and though we have discussions about religion occasionally, I find it very hard to speak on the topic without sounding condescending. But how else is it going to be? When the 10-year-old looks at the 4-year-old going on excitedly about Santa Claus, how can he not feel smarter and more mature? How is the 10-year-old supposed to respond when the 4-year-old gives all of his weak arguments for the existence of Santa Claus and insistence that the 10-year-old will not receive any presents, and what motivation will anybody have to be good all year if not for the presents on Christmas Day? How can he do any better than smile sadly and hope that the 4-year-old will grow up someday and accept reality the way it is?

Jimmy Carr was on the show later and he had this on his twitter:
"I'm doing a show tonight called The Late Late Show & Richard Dawkins is the other guest. OMG! Obviously there's no God but OMG I'm excited."

The host is Ryan Tubridy - who I'm pretty sure agrees with every word coming out of Dawkins mouth. (I listen to his very entertaining radio show And this is IRISH. Dawkins isn't a household name here and the main demographic for the Late Late show is the going-to-mass-every-sunday type. I think that in terms of who the audience was this interview wasn't all that bad.

Regarding the priest: IRELAND. There's always a priest in the audience...
