Anyway to confirm whether or not that guy lived? People who are kicked in the noggin by a horse kind of have an unfortunate tendency to die from it.

Well, he looks like he is moving in a semi-conscious manner afterwards, and I don't think he copped the powerful part of the strike (leg was nearly at full extension).

Just because our nations have, for the most part, moved beyond using animals for physical labor doesn't mean it's unjust.

Our civilizations were built on this shit. Don't turn your noses up so fast.>> ^blankfist:
Well, that's what you get.

Looks like the douchebag caught it on the jaw or lower face. Rattled his little pea-brain around for sure, but I doubt it would do much brain damage.

I know it makes me a douchebag, but it's nice to see people get appropriately rewarded for their cruelty every once in a while. It's relieving, like a shower of rain in 40c heat.

In the "horse as a machine" scenario there is a difference between applying a whip to startle, thereby activating the flight reflex and engaging or encouraging faster forward motion, and thinking "this dumb animal isn't doing what I want it to do, so I'm going to smack it around". I think this dude was pretty clearly going for the second one. However, by doing so he drove the horse past the flight reflex and into fight, and discovered the consequences.

There are those who would disagree with the first application as well; ie. any application of the whip, or any other negative reinforcement is wrong. By all means, limit the use of such things, but I don't think that they need to be universally condemned.

Civilization was built on abusing animals? Don't you agree there is a pretty huge difference between hitting a horse and having it do physical labor?

gharksays...

I agree with the above posters on all points, beavers should definitely not be used for any sort of ship building unless it is absolutely necessary.

And after that, he stayed in bed for the remainder of his days. He is remembered by his wife Claire, two daughters, and ranch hand July.

Being around horses for most of my life, the guy is just an idiot. I could see this happening a mile away. You never stand behind a horse giving it a chance to kick you.

handmethekeysyousays...

I am saying that once a culture moves beyond doing something out of necessity, they become blind to the fact that there are other people for whom it is still a necessity.

My friends do not eat bugs. I have heard some of them say, "Eww, I would never eat a bug." If they were starving, but surrounded by bugs, they would eat bugs.

If you needed to whip a horse to get it to move a log to get that log to the site where you were building a shelter for yourself because you currently had no shelter, you would whip the horse to get it to move that log to the site where you were building a shelter for yourself. Why? Because you currently had no shelter & a horse is the best way at your disposal to move it.

Now I know nothing of these people. I don't know what the intended use of that log is. But my point, what I'm saying, the driving force of my [willfully obtuse] comment, is that none of us do.

And if people find this man's actions despicable, I want them to be aware that they themselves are the beneficiaries of similar actions from the past.>> ^Gallowflak:

Civilizations were also built with slave labour. The use of a method is not an argument for its own legitimacy... I don't understand what you're trying to say.

@handmethekeysyou

My objection, and I assume the objection of most, is the demonstration of excessive brutality. Animal labour is necessarily used in many parts of the world, sure. I'm not sure that it even need be stated. What's unacceptable - I think universally and ubiquitously - is cruelty. Cruelty seems to be what this guy is inflicting and it follows that he got what was coming to him.

It's not necessarily a criticism of animal labour... it's a minor celebration of what might be termed "justice".

gwiz665says...

If I were desperate and had to use an animal to move shit, I still wouldn't keep whipping it again and again. @handmethekeysyou it seems to me that you're putting in meaning that others aren't getting at.

People aren't turning up their noses because "oh no, that poor animal has to drag a log and do physical labor", it's because he beats the shit out of it. And faces righteous retribution.

@handmethekeysyou
It isnt that he was using the horse to do work, its how he went about it. Being both mean and stupid is a powerfull combo.
If your gonna use the "Our civilizations were built on this shit. Don't turn your noses up so fast." argument, I'll add that my grandpappy never beat horse while standing directly behind it.
