Patricia Heaton (Everyone Luvs Raymond) fails gameshow math

People from the midwest may be nicer and smarter than the rest of Americans, but they aren't quick with math.

The question mentions a Euro, but it's not necessary for the solution Did her brain just shut down as soon as she saw something beyond a yes/no question?

No channels?

And I'm sorry, but it's *fail, since she was obviously the only person in the studio who didn't get it.

@ Demon
Euro's is neccessary for the question though, because they're asking what 5 euro's is worth in american money. Its a basic math question, if 1E = $1.50, 5E = ? Im not sure what you're getting at if thats not the jist of your comment.

She may not be that bright, but she -is- a good sport. "I'll throw in the other $25000." A surprisingly classy finish.

Actually, it's not that she's not bright...she appears to be just lazy. Since she -did- manage to work it out after the "easy way" failed.

Why fail? She got the answer right.

Some people get too worried about how they're perceived if they make a mistake with simple math, so, in her case, I guess the anxiety froze her brain.

Poincaré, a famous french mathematician, once admitted to being terrible at making even the simplest arithmetic operations.

Wow, I would never get this right, and I freaking rawk at math. I guess a quarter is 25 cents, because that's a quarter of a dollar, but wtf is a dime, a penny and a nickel? I can google it now of course, but that would be hard for the show. I never knew the point of making up new names for coins, seems many countries do this, why not just call them by their denominations? So much easier and less confusing.

[EDIT] I guess after thinking for more then a few seconds about it, I actually wouldn't have needed the other values, since the one I knew turned out to be the right one. But still, soooo not my point!

That's actually the main reason that (most) people are bad at math. They just don't put in the effort to figure it out. That starts at a young age and continues throughout school and adulthood. As math gets harder in school, people get left behind and are convinced it's a confusing subject. It's very straightforward (at least through high school) if you have a grasp of logic and reason and you put in the mental energy to work through problems. I'm sure you've noticed though that a large number of people have no interest in such things.
