Olbermann spanks O'Reilly

BoneyDsays...

I was really worried for a long while there that O'Reilly was being taken seriously in the US. But, i'm glad he isn't and that there are shows out there discrediting his brand of "journalism". We only get a little bit of American news here in Oz - unfortunately Fox News Channel is one of the sources.

Olbermann is my hero!!1

American news is so rubish its a constant bitch fight so what if sumone has made a false statement realting back to 2ww who cares im not on annyones side i think both news companies and men are stupid. how is this news? i think this only works in a america becuse everyone is so patriotick its stupid. it is important to rmeber history and remember those who have died making things better for us but you have to balence that with common sence and making resnable desisions for future activities.

Fox may not be truly fair and balanced but I'll take them over the whiney liberal press every day. I love hearing people whine about Fox when they have ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC + who knows how many local affiliates spewing out liberal crap 24/7. But then again, liberals never like anyone having a different opinion, that might go against their socialist/facist mindset.

EntertainmentMajorsays...

Ahhh...the conservative mind control forum posters!! Lets head for the hills where we can watch The Daily Show and Jane Fonda anti-Vietnam speeches in the privacy of our environmentally safe AC log cabin.

Actually MSNBC has better rating than Bill every so often. I think he even did a report about it to counter something Bill had said. FOX spews so much crap that eventually people are going to wake up and smell it on their faces on day. Its sad that America is forced to have talk show hosts one uping eachother as news. But it was interesting that FOX is doctoring the transcript to cover Bill's a$$.

O'Reilly gets a fact backwards and is summarily crucified by all 13 viewers of Olbermann's. Meanwhile, isn't entire the liberal theology backwards? "Appeasement of enemies works." WRONG. "High taxes bring prosperity." WRONG. "In order for one to win, someone else must lose." WRONG. Ad infinitum.

SplinterOfChaossays...

"O'Reilly gets a fact backwards and"

Only one? And liberals believe in appeasement of enemies?
It's not even that O'Reilly got this fact wrong, I haven't liked him for a very long time (only a little time after I learned of him) and I have more than just this instance to dislike him for. And we liberals don't appease enemies - although trying to make friends is often thought of that way. But if you look in a history book, republicans aren't the only ones who start wars.

As your your other quotes . . .
When politicians talk about taxes: if they're going up, the poor pay more and the rich are less effected. If we're talking about lowering taxes we mostly just lower it for the rich. I won't dispute your quote until you explain that to me - how only the rich deserve lower taxes if the rich get them. And about winning and losing: neither I or any of my liberal friends are against mutual victory. My republican friends, however, have told me just that quote.

I'm afraid a troll star would be worn as a badge of honour by many. ;-). But that said, I'm glad we have a wide spectrum of views, as long as we keep the personal attacks to a minimum and address the topic at hand.

That's just sad on Olberman's part. Everyone knows these guys don't like each other, but I've never seen O'reilly come anywhere close to the sort of vengeful, glib, diatribe that Olbermann just pulled off. It's not part of O'reilly's mission statement to waste his time on "pissing contests", as another post put it. In the past, O'reilly has shown that he'll respond and usually invite the attacker to come on his show...but I've never seen him insult his audience's intelligence like Olbermann just did. ...over getting a piece of history incorrect (or saying Malmedy when he may have meant something else)? What's he on...like 250 broadcast hours a year? He's going to make mistakes. One of the things about O'reilly is that he'll actually admit when he's wrong (along with attacking Republicans and holding blatantly liberal views...yes, I've seen it with my own eyes. So while he's definitely conservative, he's also far from being a staunch republican--technically, he votes independent. Simply put, he's one of the most opinionated people you'll find, and if what he thinks isn't what the Republican party or the Bush administration thinks, he'll say so), so it would have been nice to see him admit a mistake...but it's possible he was talking of an event that really did happen but he was just calling it the wrong name, in which case I can see why he'd be less willing to admit a mistake, he does have a sizeable ego for sure.

But does it really matter? Does getting this one bit of history wrong mean there aren't dozens of other similar events just as convincing? Why does Olberman assume we won't ask ourselves this question? And is Olberman really trying to suggest O'reilly is a slanderer of US soldiers by nature? It's such a flimsy point picking apart a relatively (being the operative word) insignificant mistake while masked as news. Is he trying to steal Jon Stewart's thunder? At least The Daily Show doesn't pretend to be trustworthy news.

In a sense I'm glad because Olbermann let his true colors show enough that it's clear he can't be trusted to report news.

bill o'reilly is pretty incredible. and olbermann secretly wishes he could be that viciously unaware. I wish I could be as completely wrong while at my job as often as o'reilly, too.

Constitutional_Patriotsays...

I must admit I was pretty annoyed from Bill O regarding this. I think mostly because Bill never owned up to being incorrect about a historical fact. We're all only human (I think), and we do make mistakes. My grandfather died in the Battle of the Bulge which was near this awful occurence in history. I still think Bill owes americans an apology for not owning up to big mistakes like this one...

If he truly believes this is what happened even though all the history books dictate otherwise, then he should support his theory with some evidence, for it is a serious accusation to accuse these post-humously medal awarded veterans of being outright war criminals. This equates to him calling the official account a conspiracy. That would make him a conspiracy theorist I guess.

Believe it or not, I used to like Bill O when he was funny and I was ignorant. Hey, at least I can own up to my mistakes.

The circus of the media on tv today seems to be just that.. A GAME.

Probably why I watch alot of cspan and the web instead.

All Olbermann is trying to do is display O'Reilly's apparent disregard for reality and factual events, his tendency to say literally ANYTHING to come across as intelligent and/or correct, his contempt for apoligies and self-consistency, and Fox News' willingness to attempt to obfuscate the public record by lying right alongside their parrot.

If Olbermann soils his public image by continuing to take O'Reilly down and is inexorably taken down with him, at least he can rest easy knowing that the sacrifice was well worth it. O'Reilly is demonstrably a fountain of ignorance, irrationality, and primitive thinking. Unfortunately many people (some of whom are regulars here) enjoy taking huge drinks from it.

Regardless of what party or ideology one supports, be it Liberal or Conservative, we should be wary of anyone willing to lie in our faces for political gain- there are plenty of pundits on either side who together are doing more to damage the country than any terrorist.
