Never tell a rich plane buyer that the plane can't stall

Never tell a rich plane buyer that the plane can't stall (Icon A5)--because he will hear that as "the plane can't crash".

This is an Icon A5 seaplane (light sport plane "LSA"; no full pilot's license required to own it or fly it) taking off from a lake in Michigan last week with two aboard---he uses a circular take off, which, in certain seaplane circles, in certain circumstances would make sense (though, not necessarily here).

And it mushes into the trees at about 100 feet, wallowing in a near stall.
No one is dead, passenger is in the hospital.

This is the 5th accident this year for the sold-as-it-can't-stall Icon A5. Roy Holliday's widow just eulogized him at the Baseball Hall of Fame induction---he crashed his Icon A5 about 2 years ago with 4-5 substances aboard...

Takes off lazily and diagonally across the wind, turns long after it's obviously not gaining altitude, and hits obvious obstructions.
I, for one, am glad this pilot won't be flying at any lake near me.

I think the "sport" pilot designation is a disaster waiting to happen. Not enough training for vehicles that are as dangerous as any regular single engine piston aircraft.

100 miles an hour close to trees and ground. Oh wait; let's be casual about letting people do that while carrying passengers.

Maybe---Light Sport stuff should be...all solo aircraft and helicopters?

I was thinking: what if you were (thinking you were safe) sunbathing on the deck of the second speed boat when the debris suddenly scattered across your body and deck?

Can't tell from here if it was direct hit or if anyone was aboard; I assumed those boats were tied up at buoys and empty but...I have no particular reason for thinking that other than the number of injured reported only included the aircraft.

My dad flies a one-seater electric LSA he kit-built himself. Based on his summary, I always described the "sport" designation to curious friends this way: "as long as you only kill yourself, the FAA doesn't care". I am surprised and unnerved to see carrying one passenger is indeed allowed under current regulation... that ain't right.
