Michigan youth investigate how WalMart came to their small town

quantumushroomsays...

Wal-Mart's only crime is being "too good" at capitalism. As for the turd-filled marshes, sorry lads, we've got 300 million people in America now, and buildings have to go somewhere. I don't like it either, but as I'm in fast-filling Florida (1000 new idiots moving here per day) you can't preach to me about "overdevelopment" from your snowy small town. BTW Michigan drivers are second only to Florida drivers at being unable to drive.

I feel bad for people in small towns who end up having their shopping lives controlled through one mega store.

Conversely, I'm v. glad that I live in a large city where there is zero need for me to go to Walmart, since they have tons of superior competitors.

Voronwesays...

really? didn't notice that yet in our little town. Here it's (quoting Helge Schneider:) "Schlecker - der alte Monopolist" [from: "Die Katzenoma"] who wants to get all the customers...
[Man gewöhnt sich zu sehr ans englisch tippen]

Wal-Mart is just the definition of efficiency. Instead of going to 20 places to get what you need, you go to one. It just makes sense and people are just bitter because they hadn't thought of it sooner. (Think about it: If it was such a bad idea, then why is it so successful?)

This boy needs to grow the hell up.

You know I'm about to move into one of those little quaint slices of nowhere pretty soon cause my hubby's job. Hamlet/Rockingham, NC. The first house finding trip I took was grim. Nothing. Hardly any of the business I've come to rely upon to get the things I need for my family. I have two children you see.

How far out of the area was I going to have to drive in order to shop for the things we need? 1 hour? to Raleigh? 1 1/2 to Charlotte?

You could imagine my relief to see a Walmart Superstore there later that day. For 24 hours a day, I can get anything a family basically needs.

To those folks living in those small towns where they roll the sidewalks up a 8:00 p.m., I'd like this little wide eyed spoiled college boy all filled up with unrealistic childhood idealism tell me where I'm going to find children's advil, tylenol cold, puffs plus, favorite juice, popsicles, soup, and electric blanket at 3 a.m. when my little boy wakes up in pain from his fever and cold..?

Sam Walton is a genius, because unlike this pipplely welp that only has to worry about whether to finish his term paper that weekend or go skiing, there was an entepreneur that understands the needs of average family. He has the basic needs of the family met...and at decent prices... 24 hours a day. God bless him, damnit!

I want to see this kid married one day w/ a baby. I bet you he'll be charging in Walmart one night wearing jeans, no socks w/ sneakers, pajama top under coat to get diapers, humidifier, ear drops or ointments and some kotex. He'll remember his cute little student film bitching about this symbol of encroaching capitalism...this evil empire. He might even pick up a coke and tabloid paper on his way out.

Good points swampgirl... which makes me all the more greatful for another two great Canadian "institutions"... Shopper's Drug Mart, and Sobey's, which do much the same things.

quantumushroomsays...

Swampgirl, thank you for views. The liberal "intelligentsia" and their kollij-age parrots don't often get to hear from people in the real world. Wal-Mart's shareholders must be very disappointed in their "monopoly," since Target, Kmart and Costco contunue to exist.

yea, walmart is trying to put one in my town, Honeoye Falls, in New York, but the people are giving them hell. serios;y, our entire school system is like 1800 kids. we dont need a walmart here, and there is one not 15 minutes away.

Wal Mart is efficient. If you dont like it dont shop there. What I think is funny is that krupo had a rough time with the word grateful.

Wal-Mart is efficient? so what? efficiency does not equal excellence. Walmart does all it can to stop employees to start unions, their chinese factories pay workers not even a dollar per day, there are cases where they are forced to have abortions, and they have to lie to inspectors. Instead of providing health plans they encourage employees to apply for welfare. Why do you think Wal Mart is pulling out of Germany? because they had to buy a german company first and it just so happens that this company allowed unions, paid vacations, good salary, good health plans and they paid like $14 dollars an hour I think. How much does an american wal mart employee earns? Any company can be that efficient and expand rapidly if they are as unethical and tricky as Wal Mart is.

choggiesays...

Yep, the survey says, As good as Walmart makes it for a segment of the pajama wearers, the people who really lose out, are the many hundreds of thousands of workers, mostly Chinese, who toil away to give us our Plastique! Our diapers, Our Hot wheels, Our make-up, Our Christmas decor.....yadda yadda...butterfly wings here, Tidal Waves there....cause and effect...take the sensible side of knowing how to help you and yours....Steal what you can back from WalMart, most of the bubbles have no cameras-Take a battery operated degausser with ya to the DVD/CD area, and start in t'stuffin' that special jacket....

Wal-mart is cheap. Cost AND quality-wise. Often a waste of time in the end.
And yes their business ethic is deplorable. If you honestly don't give a fuck about anyone outside of your immediate family and circle of friends, it's a great place to do your business. Otherwise, it can be a bit of a conflict to shop there.

Damn this is old. Thank god we've moved again since this was posted. It was true though. Where we HAD to live a year ago, there was only Walmart to get everything we needed.
I'm glad it was there, but after a year of the place... I swore to stay as far away as possible when we moved to Indy.

You know I still get some groceries there, but what you guys are saying about quality is true. Their clothes are terribly made. The prices aren't as low as they used to be either.

I do the whole coupon thing these days, and on a good week... Three of the local shops have outdone Walmart on Milk, cheese, bread and soda prices.

Whenever a Wal-Mart sprouts up, ma'n'pa shops get priced out of existence. Unable to compete with a corporate behemoth, thousands of privately- and locally-owned shops have gone belly-up in the wake.

Its sad, really.

As a side-note, Wal-mart is a big contributor to the Republican election war chest, while Costco tends to give more to Democrats.

Then people don't really put much value in mom and pop shops, its just the way of the world. In Europe and cali, people don't feel the same way and those shops exist with super stores in the area...just a matter of economics really.
