I agree with the principle of his warning. To say that it has become a major concern in the last two weeks is grossly inaccurate, there have been numerous events in the last decade that have not been spotlighted by the media because they have loyalties to a political agenda, or to business customers.

american corporate media,which is owned by a dismal FIVE entities,has quietly become the number ONE lobbyist in america.
they not only facilitate the *lies of our government but are vital in the packaging and marketing to *promote those lies in an easily digestible format.

targeting a vapid and unquestioning american public,or as chomsky puts it "the stupid masses".

not only is our "fourth estate" an utter failure but an active participant in misinforming the public.

This has always been true. Simply read "Manufacturing Consent". In a democracy the government doesn't have a big stick to threaten people with, so they must use propaganda. It's been documented time and time again, they don't work for us, they don't have a best interests in mind. Everyone knows it.

Only ordinary people who care will watch this and see the truth in what is being said. The media on the other hand will be meet with deaf ears.

AIM is a corporate front group funded by the Oil Industry. Last I checked, the Oil Industry was not super concerned with "Accuracy In Media."

The items this guy (a FOX NEWS analyst) is screaming about are conservative talking points that have been featured extensively on FOX, among other corporate media outlets.

This presentation (and organization) is every bit a part of the machine it pretends to protest.

I agree with the hyperbolic sentiment of the title, but not the hypocrisy within.

If you agree with that sentiment, then you identify with the elites Chomsky was criticizing. Chomsky may be cynical, but he is no nihilist. He is a humanist. (and so are you!)

If the human race is truly stupid, then there is no point in seeking positive change, and we are all doomed to suffer whatever cruel horrors fate has in store for us.

Underinformed? Sure, that is fixable.
Stupid? Fuck that kind of collective self loathing.

We are all we have. Everything that happens to us -short of an apocalyptic act of nature- , good or bad, will be a result of human action. If we think ourselves stupid, then stupid we shall be. If we loathe ourselves, it only makes it that much easier for the rich and powerful to dominate us. If we think ourselves elite in a world of fools, it just makes it that much easier for the real elites to divide and conquer (yes, I'm looking at you, rightwing libertarians.)

We need to start a humanist revival. White tents. Gospel music. The whole nine. And we are going to need some rebel preachers. Are you in?

guess i should have paid more attention to how my comment may have been misconstrued in regards to chomsky's quote.
"manufacturing consent" is the book that started it all for me and the more time that passes ...the more it seems chomsky had it right from the get-go.
the man is brilliant and i have the utmost respect for him and his work.

and if you took the metaphysical aspect out of my worldview,what you would have left is a secular humanist.
i feel very strongly that my fellow humans have been utterly and thoroughly duped into believing that their happiness is tied to what they do or what they own and that somehow their success/failure resides solely in their ability to "pick themselves up from their own boots-straps".

Public Opinion by Walter Lippmann

Chomsky is getting some of his quotes and ideas the elite have of "the bewildered herd" from Walter Lippmann. His (Lippmanns) contempt for people is pretty shocking and it actually really bothers me reading it. The idea of course is that people can't be trusted and must have decisions made for themselves. I disagree of course but there's some things I wonder about. How the elites use it though is to attack other countries and that I will never agree with.

Next you'll be telling us that media matters is a fully non-partisan group that isn't funded by george soros, and hasn't been having pow-wows with the white house on how to spin the news. And that fast and furious didn't result in the deaths of 300 mexicians, the death of an american, and the cold blooded gunning down of 16 kids at a party either.

I suggest watching the full 30min speech instead of the four minute clip, it's much better.
