Johnny Cash - Hurt

"I love Johnny Cash, but the NIN version is still the best."

For me they are basically two different songs. The NIN version is basically the suicide note of a drug addict. Cash's, on the other hand, turns the song into a reflection on mortality by an old man. When I first saw this video I was simply amazed how the exact same song became something entirely different under another performer. A testament to the power of music I suppose.

Cash transmuted the rage of a young man into the regret of man at the end of his life. It gets even more power the more you know about Johnny Cash's life, and how he survived being an angry young man, survived being a drug addict and through the love of a great woman recovered and continued making music until he dropped.

Hopefully, at some point, Trent Reznor will perform this song in concert in the same manner as Cash - just to put an end to all the arguments over which version is better. Hopefully Reznor will live as long as Cash did, and will have the opportunity to have the same perspective gained.

I don't know, I think it's surprising how the feelings are very much the same, despite the differience of age and perspective. It was always a song about regret, loss, and feeling tired of life (and yourself). Often when young men express that we dismiss it as being angst ridden and immature. As if their misery was an indulgence. And it seems to be for a few, but there are others that are really just struggling to hold on to life.

Incredibly moving. I can barely watch this without profound sadness threatening to overwhelm me. Johnny Cash was one of my favourite artists as a child and I had just rediscovered him maybe a year before he passed away. Now just hearing this song on the radio is enough to bring a tear to my eye.
He was one of the best and is missed.
