"I was riding my legal ebike in a busy area during rush hour when I saw a bike path I hadn't tried before. Thinking it would be fun, relaxing, and safe, I proceeded politely and at normal bike speeds down the empty path."
"At the end of the path I saw a woman and a dog. She had her arms stretched across the path like the landing pose of a jumping jack."
"I stopped well short of her, and she approached me to tell me I was damaging the path she paid a lot of money for. Even after I told her I was legal, she continued to be aggressive. So, I started the camera and explained the law, expecting to de-escalate the situation. She still physically assaulted me by walking into me and pushing me when I would try to leave or go around."
"Then, when I tried to back up and go the other way, she swings around and holds on to me. I felt trapped and I wanted to get away. I didn't want to hurt her, so I gave her a big shove and rode away as fast as I could. A motorcycle rider saw the whole thing and gave me that 'knowing look' as I rode past."
"I have minor injuries but no damage to the bike. Both my legs are scraped and bruised. I pulled something in my shoulder pushing her away."
"I had both a knife and a gun. This lady did the most stupid thing you could do, and she was lucky I'm a sane person and know the meaning of 'reasonable force'."
"If you think someone is doing something illegal, call the police, don't confront them."
"I'm buying a can of bear mace."

CrushBugsays...I think there is plenty of asshole to go around there.
newtboysays...Only one asshole, the idiot that attacked the rider because she's 100% wrong about the law and her rights to enforce it. He could have legally killed that woman. She kidnapped (that's what it is when you illegally detain someone, like she did) and assault and battered him. As I see it, he would have been justified shooting her.
I hope they find and charge that moron, she committed at least 2 felonies on camera.
Edit-keep in mind she had already blocked and attacked him before the video starts, explaining and excusing his attitude in my eyes.

CrushBugsays...Fair points, but he still seemed to engage with her more than I would have and he certainly did a lot of talking.
I had a similar, but lesser experience with a woman on a multi-use trail when I was riding my bike, many years ago. She was sure that this was only a walking trail and tried to block me from riding. I simply got off my bike while she was shouting at me, then head-faked her and got around. I got back on my bike and rode off once I was clear of her arms. I just didn't think I should spend much time thinking about her. You just can't take to crazy.

Fun fact: Did you know that there's no country in the world other than America where anybody would think to make that observation?
newtboysays...Absolutely untrue.
She appeared to be on drugs, judging from her action and demeanor...in the Philippines she could be a target for death directly from the president, as well as from the death squad militias.
Also, America is far from the only place where deadly force may be used in self defense.
Let's not go into all the nations where a woman alone like that would just be kidnapped, crazy attack or not.
Nice try though.

siftbotsays...Moving this video to Mordhaus's personal queue. It failed to receive enough votes to get sifted up to the front page within 2 days.

Please. Oh please. What have we devolved to that what they said is anything other than common sense, humane, and civilized?
Anger is contagious and literally lethal. Can we just chill out and deescalate?
I say that as someone who gets pretty mad at times. I need to follow my own advice.
Buttlesays...That is nonsense. He never looked to me like someone who reasonably feared death or grave bodily injury. Furthermore, he could have turned the other way; in states without a "make my day" law, ordinary people in public spaces have a duty to retreat, if possible, instead of using deadly force.
In no jurisdiction that I know of is the threat of missing a doctor's appointment justification for killing someone, not matter how ignorant.
He could have legally killed that woman.
newtboysays...Really? And what video were you watching, because this one didn't have him in it.
He certainly should have feared bodily injury, since he suffered bodily injury. In my view, when someone is so irrational that they physically attack a larger, stronger, younger person, it's reasonable to assume that they are extremely dangerous.
He could not, from what I saw, turn the other way. Scooters don't turn on a dime, and it wouldn't help anyway, she follows him to continue the encounter, she would have done the same thing in the other direction, imo.
Being detained by force is kidnapping. In no jurisdiction that I know of is kidnapping not justification for killing someone, no matter how little they threaten onlookers. ;-) Lucky for her he wasn't a stand your ground don't back down asshole in a stand your ground state.

Chairman_woosays...I can only take the video author at his word, but he claims to have repeatedly attempted to deescalate before he started filming.
And even then, the video begins with him attempting to explain that she has no legal right to detain him in an even tone of voice.
The woman appears belligerent and is acting well outside of her legal rights by physically blocking him.
I think the guy acted with remarkable restraint under the circumstances. The woman shows no signs of being open to reason or changing her mind.
Some people simply cannot be reasoned with. And I say that as a mental health worker who deals with rude and belligerent people constantly. (frighteningly often not the service users but the general public they have to deal with)
I do entirely feel the sentiment of what you are saying. It would be a better world, but it's not the world we live in. Lamentably, wishing will not make it otherwise.

Chairman_woosays...I'm pretty much with you on this one dude. But I think arguing kidnapping & lethal force is a bit of a stretch even in (most of) the USA.
I realise you aren't advocating for that anyway, but I suspect in most jurisdictions lethal force here (or even just a good kicking) would have been a trip to jail.
"Spirit of the law" is very significant in most courts. While this could be defined as kidnapping on the most narrowly technical of terms, it would take a hell of a lawyer to make it stick don't you think?
It definitely wouldn't fly in the UK at any rate.

newtboysays...I totally agree with you, but I also see that people get away with going way too far, daily.
I just wish people would consider that others may not think they're harmless and may respond disproportionately before violently attacking strangers and playing cop and court on a pathway, because it could easily have gone very wrong for her.

ulysses1904says...I'm compelled to ask if what you write comes from legal experience and study.
So many "Law and Order" TV show law grads on the Internet, it would be nice to read a learned opinion now and then.
Especially when you follow "Fun FACT" (my emphasis) with what looks to be hyperbole.

newtboysays...I very much enjoy the home I live in, thanks. What was your point?
Living my life as I write has rarely been an issue, I'm not often attacked by crazed elderly women and their dogs, and I can defend myself. Not everyone is so lucky or able....or stable.
I just wouldn't have stopped in the first place.
If you're serious, and live your real life as you write, then good luck with that whole living at home thing, dude.
Buttlesays...If you're asking me, then no, I am not a lawyer. I have stayed out of prison for a good many years, though.

Buttlesays...There is a technical term for people who act on their belief that killing annoying old bats on the bike path is legally justifiable. They're called "inmates".
I very much enjoy the home I live in, thanks. What was your point?
newtboysays...Not when the annoying old bat is the aggressor and they have video to prove it, then they are called "victims" even when the aggressor gets the worst of it.
As proof, I have stayed out of prison my entire life, and I'm 46.

Paybacksays...I always enjoy these sort of videos. It's quite fun to figure out how much further did the victim (ebike rider in this case) be polite before the attacker became unconscious than if I was in the same position.
This guy had about a minute on me. Good on him!
newtboysays...Here's a good example of my point, being that there are reason's why you shouldn't get overly aggressive with strangers, you never know who they really are.....
